The fall of PC gaming

Everytime I go into a game shop i see a smaller shelf for the PC games. It seems that its only use is MMO's and I can see consoles getting them. I was just wondering whether people believe computer will be needed for gaming and if they thought it was sad that PC gaming is in its last years.

People have been predicting the end of PC gaming for almost as long as they have been predicting the end of the world.

Neither are going to happen.

PC gaming isn't dieing because Game stores don't have a zillion copies of PC games ordered, hell at Fry's they have the biggest collection I've seen, but anyway, that doesn't mean shit, game stores have always been more console based because that's how you get console games, you go to the store and buy it...no alternatives except ordering online.

EDIT: Oh, PC games are abundant in Fry's and they are always restocking, you may want to start going there, because it's the opposite for consoles, and then "vice versa" for Gamestop and such.

Oh god, oh god oh god, please let's just not reply to this topic and let it die. Don't makes this thread turn into a pointless "PC gaming is/isn't dieing" debate, just ignore this.

But what are forums for but finding similar minded yes-men?

DEATH THE PC! RWAR! (Has a crappy computer and spends all his money on beer/ramen/gas)

I didn't mean to say "oh no PC gaming is dieing", I meant it is declining and is not as popular and don't people find it a bit sad.

Right, people have been saying 'PC gaming's dying' for so long, it's lost all meaning. Things don't die over the course of that many years. If I shoot you in the heart, you're dead in a second. You don't walk away and die ten years later. As for the first post, only MMOs?? Sim games, Civilization, does this mean nothing to you? PC gaming is, in my opinion, stronger than it was five years ago. Plus, do you think WoW's subscriptions are shrinking every month??? As long as computers get stronger every year, so will the games market for them.

You see, there are many people who would completely disagree with you right then and there. They'd pull up charts, they'd tell you that there are plenty of games on the PC, they'd show you that big ass long list of PC exclusives on that one website.

I'm no PC gamer, I have my reasons, but even I know that the statements you're making (with no offense to you personally) are completely idiotic with no back up on your theory except for PC games on shelfs.

and these types of threads test 94% positive to start a flame war between PC and Consoles even though they are both merging anyway to make the Ponsole or the Con...celles?

You make a good point obviously PC games are sold online and the PC will always have the best graphics. But if there is a game on a console I find myself getting it on the xbox and there are very little exclusives for the PC (Crysis and STALKER me thinks). I've just always loved PC gaming and felt like its not as required as it used to. Sorry for every putting up the thread.

as long as they keep selling pc hardware... it won't die

i don't have enough money for a future PC with an angry face drawn on it. my current gen laptop barely runs BF2 and iTunes at the same time. i could mod or add parts, but i fear breaking the computer and losing my warranty.

Thats because Steam has essentially taken over the smarter end of the pc gaming market.
Isn't it sort of pointless to have a shelf of games at a store that can be downloaded from home for much less?

I just order online when I do buy a PC game. On a brighter note I have recieved my replacement laptop mainboard I'll be able to play The Witcher again soon! *Dances*

I think some of the reason for the fact that PC games have gotten less shelf-space (sp?) is due to the popularity of steam - who in their right mind would go outside to buy something when they can just stay inside with their trusty PC

oddly, the last time I was in a games shop most of the PC games on the shelves were "old" blizzard titles like Diablo II, Warcraft III and Starcraft.

Speaking of PC gaming.
How I long for the day when all consoles come with mouse and keyboard.
Oh and also PC gaming is not dying, the end, finito, no way!!

I think that if no one makes pc games no more people are going to start making emulators for the pc. I hate console exclusive games they suck.

Seriously, don't ever say that. You will probably be flamed by PC fanboys. the PC is not dead and will never be dead. In fact, PC has more of a chance to survive then the consoles, because everyone has a PC, there are plenty of cheap to make, indie games and games bored housewives play. World of Warcraft has probably made more money then any other game in history and has over 10 Million subscribers. PC gaming is a true gem of the industry, as it avoids a lot of the problems with consoles and is far more accessible. Oh, and N.K, I always get a hard copy of a game, its more convenient and I don't download it again if I need to uninstall it.

People were saying the same thing over a decade ago when Playstation showed up.

Accessible? Surely you jest. One of the distinct advantages of console gaming is its great accessibility compared to PC gaming. Just press the power button and start playing.

Actually, the world is definitely going to end. Even before the sun goes nova, it'll expand to be a red giant and Earth's orbit will be inside it.

Fortunately, we've got a few billion years yet before that happens.

As long as people use personal computers, they will play PC games.
If I don't have to go to a store to buy them, so much the better.

Razzle Bathbone:

They will. The problem is that those games might be pretty mediocre and dull.

Infact when you look at sites like Newgrounds and the like you'd find a bunch of shitty flash games, so in a way the PC has shovelware rivaling that of the Wii. Still love SuperCrazyGuitarManiac and the stuff at Kongregate :)

The same thing can be applied to consoles as well.

I really dont see PC gaming dying any time soon. Even though when I go to my game retailer stores and see the PC selection slowly shrink sometimes, or have non preferable selection, I know that it will still live if consoles ever failed. All I want is more console type genres more accessible on the pc

Why did the Arcade die? Well let's ask why the arcade lived in the first place. The arcade survived because you play games that were much more powerful than anything you could do on your home systems. As the 3D console era kicked in, there were precious few styles of games that couldn't be done on home consoles and a new stage of the arcade started, one dominated by racing games with steering wheels, DDR, and fighting games at a time when online play was mostly unheard of, things that were impractical on consoles. In both stages, the arcade had unique experiences that couldn't be recreated at home. Now let's look at the major PC genres, FPS (which play better with keyboard and mouse) RTS (which can only be played with a mouse), and MMOs (which require online play which is still in it's infancy on consoles). Notice a common trend? PC gaming has entered the 'second stage' that the arcades were in before they went belly up. As consoles embrace online functionality and allow for the use of keyboard/mouse controls, retail PC gaming will die just like the arcade did.

Freeware PC gaming will never ever die and there will still be a small number of games released to make money, but forever gone are the glory days of late 80s to 2000.

If you have a PS3, google "FragFX PS3 controller"

I may as well bookmark it or make it a Macro, I'm sick of telling people about it!

most of their revenue comes from online purchases now. so basically, you're purchasing in the wrong place.

A lot of people have already said the obvious! PC gaming isn't passing away. It'll be with us always, promise. Consoles are just little PC adorers themselves anyway. PSone - console. PS2 - console with-- hard drive?! As the consoles keep growing up they just get closer and closer to being a PC themselves, just no mouse.

The popularity of PCs will keep gaming on them alive. As others have stated, who doesn't have one? Not many. Heck, they're being donated to the less fortunate all over the world. And who doesn't have a dream PC parts wish list saved on the alienware site? My guy and I are big console fans but when we have the money we're building the best gaming PCs the world has ever seen. It's a dream.. *snif snif*

And what you don't seem to be including in your thoughts is the many genre of video games, mostly played exclusively on PCs, that us hardcore gamers just don't think about very much. When I was playing Diablo, my Mum was hooked on Solitaire. Websites like Bogo and great developers are making softcore games for everyone even more popular. Just because you don't see these games around your local gamestop as often doesn't mean they aren't games.

My last point: Emulators. Even the biggest console gamers also have an entire library on their computer.

As long as there are FPSs and Mumorpugus, PC gameing is here to stay.

Its true, PC gamings heyday has come and gone, I am sorry to say it as I have a shelf of PC games that plays like a Gamings Greatest Hits album DOS to XP. But its going down hill...everything is being fused into First Person and put on consoles. I bought a copy of Neverwinter Nights Diamond for 3.29 the other day. 3.29, the end is nigh and I am sad to see it go. PC used to be THE console for immersing games. but it seems to be no longer.

I'm Impressed, you make a series of very good points, and you definitely shine some light on the future of PC gaming, now if only we can get rid of the rash of MMO games lately. You Da Man.

People said the same thing during the N64/PS1 era. Just wait for the console hype to die down a bit and PC gaming will thrive once more.

i play faster, shoot more accurately, and feel more badass with a killer guitar solo or crazy beat. also you can do psych warfare if you play bad songs really loudly. works on local games and online no matter what game it is.

PC Games are as dead as Adventure Games.

...that's not very dead. I mean, the latter is a niche market, yes, but I mean they still are around and *attempts to backup claim*

Ahaha! Thanks. As for the MMO's.. It's just a trend. People wanna become instant stars in the video gaming industry and see making an MMO as the easiest thing to do. Try to look on the bright side. The more insanely popular a trend is, the greater variety of people there are to jump on the bandwagon. New gamers made by this slew of bad MMO's will be another factor to fuel the next PC driven era.
