Apparently, if LBP is a failure, the video game industry is going to DIE very soon.

um, yeah.

i don't think that the hypothetical failure of Little Big Planet will have major repercussions. Conversely however, I think that if Little Big Planet succeeds then you can expect a somewhat copycat concept from Microsoft for the 360 and more in-game map editors for console games.

TANGENT: i hope they release an in-game map editor for Bionic Commando Rearmed, the Making of Video mentions that their map editor tool creates the level in-game each time it boots, utlizing stamped objects as to emulate the design contruct of the original NES version. if they gave the map editor an easy to use UI, then it would be on like donkey kongs dong.

I think they'll have a (much worse) copycat even if it isn't a major financial success. They're copying Singstar, EyeCreate and Buzz!, aren't they?

Avvies(Wii.), X-Bar thingy(ps3.), Hell microsoft pretty much stole the controller design for playstation.

They also stole achievements from Insomniac, but this is getting tangetnal.

The only thing I can say is decent about them is, Xbox live and even then that fails compared to pc gaming.

This guy is totally, 100% right. Video games are toys, and Sony and Microsoft are doing nothing to target the young. Sure, the younger folks are playing Sony and Microsoft games, but it's not the sort of stuff they should be playing - blood and gore and boobs does not a wholesome pre-teen make. I should do more work.

LBP is on the ps3 which is the losser of the current consle war.

Let me list three must own games of 2009. (Don't argue. The formulas behind it show that they will have a massive attraction)
inFAMOUS.
MAG.
God Of War III.
What is the single unifying feature these games have?

Bizzare use of capital letters?
I can honestly say that the only game there that intrests me in any way is GoW3, but I doubt its been changed much from the first two and even if it's compleatly different everyone would be dissapointed with the result

Once again, theres a whole heap of games for the ps3 that are kid friendly, and they're pretty decent. Its just that the Ps3's main audience likes their older stuff.

Thats the correct title. It shows the two paths that Dylan can take. One of fame, and one of infamy. The suffix in is added, but to not detract from the word famous, it is put in lowercase.

And what the hell are you talking about with God Of War III?

Not to mention how (I think) it's part of Sony's strategy (how many times to I have to go through this?)

You see, Wii owners have this hunger deep in their belly that can only be fueled with blood, guts, gore, and a heaping helping of thinking in there. When they've finaly decided to buy that steak across the street, which one do you think they'll buy? The average steak(360 with many casual titles now) or the nice chewy steak that'll last them a bit longer (PS3 with alot of hardcore titles along with some nice casual ones)?

I have proof of this, my friend who's a diehard Nintendo fan is going to get a PS3 as soon as LBP comes out along with MGS4, GoW3, R2, a bunch of PSN titles and Soul Calibur 4. He obviously doesn't give a shit about the "amazing LIVE experience" or any of the other testosterone filled games on the 360 (though that is ironic when you think about it).

That's what Sony is doing, they're fueling the hardcore desires of the younger audience and I personally think it's working.

But seriously, any linkage to the development of Jak 4? I loved the series.

Microsoft really are the worst offenders here. At their birth (the Xboxes, I mean), they had two adorable mascots that I remember - Blinx, a time travelling cat, and Voodoo Vince, an arse kicking doll. So what the hell happened to them?

Sony aren't that much better though. Their earliest ones were Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, made by Naughty Dog and Insomniac, respectively. Both were sold off in order to focus on more "mature" series. However, these are still kind of kid friendly.

I knew that as I obsessed with it for a while and then lost all interest in it for some reason.
I was trying for a joke, I'm not the best randomist but I try.

EDIT(you did Indigo so I will): About GoW3 I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be the same game as GoW1 & 2, which isn't strictly bad just a bit lazy and if its a total overhaul then people will feel cheated.
One sequel is more than enough.

I don't think it's a good idea for companies to have mascotts, if you see a company with their logo dominated by one of their mascotts you're probably not going to see much else from that company (IE mario, Sonic, Master Chief).

Wholesome? What kind of creepy childhood did you have?

Seriously, who here, when they were 10, had the lexicon of a Sesame Street character with a Saved By The Bell G rated outlook on life? A child's social space is full of far more "adult" things then most people would like to admit.

This is true, every once in a while I (as a Wii owner with access to a PS2 and XBox360) get the urge to play a shooter or something. So I usually turn my computer on.

Joking aside, you do have a point, but if that's the case, it's a weak system at best, which really doesn't do much to address that video maker's point, which is that Nintendo is (some have argued to a fault) the only one really trying to appeal to younger folks in a wholesome way, and since they increasingly have no competition in that field, they're going to have less and less incentive to make really excellent games for that audience. Good Gaiven, I really do need to break up my sentences better.

I think its to much to say that the society hates to read, their just not interested. I mean look at harry potter, which is nothing more than an average book, but everyone on earth seems to have read it

Comic books died of old age surely...hobbling along trying to keep up with television and games. Gaming on the other hand is cutting edge, interactive storytelling. Is there a step beyond interactivity in entertainment?

Well, I went for the prime top-quality gourmet steak, cooked rare - the PC, with the most hardcore of the hardcore titles - and I'm not talking about the likes of Crysis here. GTR2: possibly the most hardcore driving simulation game you're ever going to get your hands on. Most of the flight simulators ever made. Basically, if you want hardcore and unflinching realism, you go for a PC. Full stop.

I highly doubt that the suposedly retarded 9 year olds who own a Wii know what the hell a motherboard is ;O And which do you think the soccer mom will buy? The extremely expensive (at first glance atleast) PC (you know, the Alienware crap)? Or the seemingly less expensive PS3 that isn't that unfamiliar territory? This isn't a debate over which system has the most hardcore (well, mostly) this is a debate of what will the soccer mom or even the Wii owner themselfs will buy. And if wii owners are what we say they are (IE, retarded babies) then they'd most likely go with the PS3, atleast that's what I think, I could not imagine my Nintendo friend suping up his PC just to play some games as he is definately not a PC gamer by any means.

And you do have a poit windfish, but I still think it's a smart move for Sony to target mainly hardcore audiences unlike MS who is trying so hard to say "Look at us! we're family freindly too! YAY!" and showing us these completely idiotic casual titles (seriously iNiS, if you make an Elite Beat Agents 2 i guarantee you that it will sell better than Lips!) that no mother in their right mind would think twice over Mario Party 8.

Say what you want about Sony and the PS3, atleast they and Nintedno know what audience they're targeting. They go hand-n-hand like bread and butter and milk and cookies.

And unfortunately, youre right about Nintendo being the only one in the audience and failing to give us that great of titles. Sure we've got the Galaxy and the Metroid and the Brawl, but it's suffering from what the PS3 suffered in it's launch there arn't really too much good exclusives. Hopefully I'll get some use out of my wii with Conduit and Madworld but who knows, those games could be crap for all we know.

He's really not right at all; he makes good points but the problem isn't marketing to kids. It's not as if kids do not want to play these games, the issue here is quality. Arguing that a toy must be marketed to kids in order for there not to be a vacuum is a bit like arguing that vibrators should be marketed to eight year old girls. Not all toys are for or need to be marketed to kids, and of course some kids are old enough to be given more adult themed toys. (Yes I know I just opened the gates of hell here with my last two sentences.) The bigger issue is that so many maturely themed games are only superficially so. They are as I have said in another thread pornographic (As it relates to obscenity) in nature. If gaming experiences a crash like the one he references with respect to comics it will come from a tidal wave of crap.

Well, there are some genuinely mature mature rated games. Nearly all of MGS IV (Akiba is a bit innapropriate, but it still makes it that much more awesome when he walks in and hits a FROG with an Anti-Tank rifle, fired with one hand). Then theres GTA IVs move towards maturity.

The problem is that these games that are mature about mature content aren't the sorts of things kids want. Kids want South Park and not the Sopranos, as it were.

Because I don't like stereotypical characters.(black guys, and most lady's notably.)A message thats stimulating.(MGS has had stimulating messages and done good on them.) Not all 13 year olds want just boobs and showers of blood.(Contrary to what most developers think.) Its just ridiculous how many women in video games can bounce around and not break their backs from boob size.

Now i'm not saying I dislike games that don't have a big message. Mercenaries 2 is my next game and it doesn't have much. But it has fucking awesome explosions and thats all I really expect from a game like this. And if I get any less then there will be blood on the streets.

True, but be fair, you are not the typical 13 year old. I have made my position on shameless sex appeal clear in a number of other threads, but I cannot deny that there are a lot of people who do not see the world the same way as me, an there are a lot of them (there are some industries that cater exclusively to them, and even more that profit heavily from them).

Bullet: Do you happen to enjoy reading at all? That kind of thing tends to help make people less retarded than some. It would be nice not to have a stereotypical black person as the lead character in games more often.

Indigo:
I suspect that if someone tried seriously to make an eroge targeted at western audiences it would take off like a damn rocket among a hell of alot of people. What I don't get is why the hell do these 13 year old kids need games to get their boob fix, the internet is for porn period! I personally don't mind the boobs, but it's kind of sad if this how they gain access to this sort of thing.

Good argument. Except he didnt take into account the kids who like the gritty realism. Personally, I think the gaming industry really should get away from Post-apocalypse Los Angeles, and take us back to the rolling meadows, dense Jungles, and majestic snow-capped mountains of the Lsgiea Kingdom. (I made that up)

I'll keep my sanity, thank you very much.

And if you think the Americans are any better, read a play called A Streetcar Named Desire. The character Stanley Kowalski rapes his sister in law, and drives her insane. And he's supposed to be the everyman.

Hah is that what that story is about? Well you learn something new every day... The funny thing to me about Rapeman is the fact that if someone tried to do something like that here in the States there would be such a shitstorm. It would be truly grand.

I really appreciate Moviebob's videos and has some real stand out points but after showing the video the my friend he completely disagrees. Apparently to his knowledge(I cannot confirm this but it would make sense) that any game that would like to be published must go under quality control under the big three(Sony, nintendo or MS) if the game meets the requirements(by being pitched properly or is kid friendly enough aka profitable) then it is given the go ahead. That would explain why there are so many games that we would consider bad but actually sell very well(although I still do NOT buy Cammie Dunaway's excuse that we should take a second look at Wii Music because Miyamoto sees something in Wii Music).

I do notice that the focus has changed somewhat since a lot of new gamers are picking the game due to the gore and tits(I like the tits, I really do but it has to be done tastefully. Make me like the character dammit or actually have her appear in multiple games.) and not the original reason to play a game because it looks like an interesting and fun game to play. And because of that most kid's today just beg their mommy's and daddy's because it is now the cool thing to do, but that is only their materialism talking(assuming American like me here, sorry my fellow citizens of the world) only to sell the console later on ebay or to their friends because they only got the system because they wanted to play one game.

If there is anything that still makes me believe that Moviebob does have some merit is 2 things. Video Games becoming unprofitable, and that these companies do not realize they are toy makers and the two go hand in hand really. Nintendo's vice president of marketing look like she really spends a second with her kids play video games despite her interview? I was not convinced especially with her work history. Mrs. Dunaway has worked for Yahoo and Frito-Lay, now there is only one reason why Nintendo would hire her and that is she is considered a great marketer.

But I dare say Mrs.Dunaway is only going to focus on the group that makes nintendo the most profit which are the kids and casuals throwing games like Animal Crossing(I have nothing wrong with animal crossing I own the GC version) and other games that play like we were watching Dora the Explorer. Games and shows like these do not challenge nor let kids believe they can be anything but puts them in a mundane rut telling them life will be boring and you must be responsible. Does anyone growing up from the first three generations of video game consoles remember WANTING to play games like that?!

Games that I played that I remember, and am looking at right now are Kirby's adventure, Kung Fu, Ninja Gaiden, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tetris(had for our family computer a TANDY), Mike Tyson's punch out, Mega Man, and Dr.Mario. I could go on but to say the least the last thing I remember spending my time playing games was being a hero in a far of land with the responsiblity to save the day or challenge my mind and reflexes against others and myself.

Today now most kids(age 4-10) who do play games are divided into two categories. Those who play games of the mundane that base off real life such as Cooking Mama, raising vitural puppies, or playing pokemon. And then there are those who play games that due to graphics and the need for deep story play the mature games, but lack the common sense or rational thought to undestand that in the end the only reason you the protagonist is brought to violence is because there is no other way to stop the antagonists. Most kids are so protected now they never had to experience that violence is not the answer and being involved can have some quite traumatic effects(I have been in fights since middle school, hit by a car twice[on my bike in high school, and another as of late by an apple iphone customer because we did not have his iphone].

However both categories right now are making the game industry profitable. Whether it is the mundane game of Animal Crossing, or playing well fill in the blank of your most bloody and violent game here. The only way for the game industry to become unprofitable is the same reason that the game industry has florished and that is the quality control by the big three.

Right now the game industry is like a clam shell, REALLY hard to break in to develop games to the point where making a game company is very unlikely without major loans or investors. The industry knows this and at the very least has caused a futher increase in their profits but moved all the expenses to the company(now indie gamer) that wants to break into the gaming industry. With the XNA club and Wiiware(sorry I do not know PS3 shareware program but they did release Flow and that was good) starting developers can share their great ideas and although they still make a handsome profit they are denied the major chance to really go big as a developer and releasing one good or even great game costs a ton of money still. I bet the creator of Braid is still in the red while Microsoft has profitted from the success of another person's idea that was not even on the payroll. This stunts the industry's growth.

Second part is that the games that are being developed by companies and published by the big three are some of the worst games I have seen released since the atari was flooded. African Safari developed by Silverstar is just one example but I'm sure each poster here could name one really really bad and unproffitable video game but is released because it is kid friendly. If it is anyone's fault it is those humans who were able to enter the industry like Mrs.Dunaway for the sole reason to make profit and it is that very greed that for me is probably the most unenjoyable gaming generation I have experienced in my life.

Hmm think I should make this a seperate topic?
