If I had a lot more money and time, I'd go for Tyranids, Chaos, Space Marines or Orks. User was banned for: Ballad (?) of an ex-goth. (Permanent) |

Actually, Orks are the most common species in the Wh40K galaxy, certainly more numerous than any measly chaos worshippers. Of course, they're not exactly organised, but if a really powerful warlord ever turns up, everyone else is stuffed. Sure, tyranids have their hives cruising around the galaxy, but pretty much everywhere else there are orks. Plus, they breed like crazy in war situations; even the tyranids need to eat a planet every now and then. Ps. Space marines are my favourite, but only when deep striking (drop pods or otherwise).
If by "managing to defend themselves" they bartered a truce when they realised just how big the Imperium is. The Tau are like an itch the Imperium can't quite reach; a tiny nuisance, but if the effort was ever made they could annhilate them using their vast fleets (compared to the Tau, anyway). Ocassionally the Tau steal a few worlds, and the Imperium does the equivalent of turning over and glaring at them, which makes them quit it. For a few years, at least... |

the whole mega warp-storm that started the age of Strife is their fault. The eye of terror is their fault. F***** eldars and their bloody arrogance. I love the IG, especially the cadians, they're a balanced mix of low-tech and basic HtH abilities. (If you're a horde spammer and like bayonnets). And they look cool too. Flashlights and T-shirts FTW!!! |

They can pretty much build up from junk, and can pop up from nowhere long after taking them out. And I read somewhere that they grow from spores that can lay in the ground for centuries. Plus, they genetically remember how to make there technology, so 2 Orks on any backwater planet, and you have a Waaagh before too long. Taking them out appears to be akin to curing a common cold by stabbing each individual virus. Maybe they won't ever win, but there one race that you just can't eliminate. |

Except when they run into open combat.(The actually regiment is Tanith 1st.) |

Lots of action novels run into that problem, of having enough people die for it to be realistic, while still maintaining the protagonist's image as total unstoppable badasses. In the earlier Gaunt's Host's books you notice them by the handful, until the author realised that if was to make a prolonged aeries, he would have to lower the death rate. No, two Orks is what's technically called a "fight". You need three for a Waaaaagh! And that's only when they've worked out who's da biggest. |

*puts on geek hat* Some aren't dead just in a forerunner bubble thing in space. Its doesn't make since how Master Chief isn't the strongest yet he doesn't die after well anything(those books think MJOLNIR means paper mache). |

I think that's all that needs to be said on the matter. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3447 Joined: 8 May 2008 | If we are going into regiments Cadian 8th here. They are the Imperial Guard like the Ultramarines are the Space Marines. Nothing weird about them,Cadia is the main base of the guard, and are the perfect example on how to be an Imperial Guard Regiment. EDIT:I know hes badass but Yarrick might not be able to take on whole factions by himself (unless the faction is orks.) |

Three also equals a decent lunch for two to fight over, if the third is a Grot. |

Actually, the Tyranids suck a world completely dry, including the atmosphere. Given enough time, the nids would devour every planet the entire 40k universe, and I'm yet to hear of an ork unit that doesn't need to breathe. So if the Imperium really wants to wipe out orks permanently, they need to hang an "All you can eat" sign around the eagle's neck. For the Hive Mind! |
Copy Clerk Posts: 74 Joined: 18 Jun 2008 | Which basically means that given enough time the tyrannids are dooming themselves to starvation. The universe only has a finite amount of biomass and so the nids would simply consume everything and then die of starvation. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1563 Joined: 16 Aug 2008 | Tau, i love the clean hi-tech feel which contrasts with the gothic-ness of wh40k. And the fact they don't totally hate the other races, and instead sometimes try to convert them to the greater good |
Muckraker Posts: 288 Joined: 7 Dec 2007 |
no, the Tau Quietly hate them and kill them off over time covertly. if they win a world which is heavily imperial populated they would act all nice as if they converted them to the greater good, but then pour something into the water so that over the next hundred years or so the human populace on that planet becomes sterial or sick and eventually dies out. |

hmm im pretty sure theres a piece of fiction in the 1st tau codex that involves human allies/servants... and they let the kroot and the vespid live didn't they, whereas other races would've just killed them |
Paperboy Posts: 32 Joined: 15 Feb 2008 | That's just not true. The tau are willing to let any faction join them as long as they embrace the greater good. If they don't, then they are killed. That's not to say the tau are the "good guys" by any means, just that they don't have the same goals as the other factions. With a tau army you can take Kroot, Vespid, and even human auxiliaries, so tau aren't xenophobic like the Imperium. Quote from Aun'shi, "I have taken great pains not to laugh at the actions of aliens, nor to weep at them or to hate them, but to understand them." |

Muckraker Posts: 234 Joined: 16 Jul 2008 | Another group that I am a fan of even though I do not like the Chaos Space Marines is the Night Lords. Demoralize the enemy, rip their hearts out before battle is even joined, make them guess, wonder which shadow contains their doom and when you finally strike they even know where their deaths came from. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 886 Joined: 14 May 2008 | I think the Crimson Fists have the most embarrassing history of any chapter. Their massive fortress-citadel thing was blown up by a single Imperial shot which happend to be a bit off. It managed (by an incredibly slim chance) to go through all their shields, plunging into the core of the armoury and blowing it all up. Fortunately, the chapter master was out at the time.
I didn't mean they were all dead, I just meant that all too often they seem to forget that they should be working like a well oiled military machine, and instead end up acting like a team consisting of Will Turner clones. |

Imperial Guard. In the middle of heretics, daemons and aliens, simple humans are cool. And I love their nigh-infinite customisability. It's easier to combine IG with anything. Ever tried outfitting SM with Tau weapons? You can't! But IG CAN! HAHA!
....I think I might be a little Slaanesh deep inside of me, though.
