It's fun, simple and worth it if you like repetitive sometimes funny gameplay, but the story is a huge pain in the ass though. |
Paperboy Posts: 29 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | Yeah, I bought it because I heard really good things about it, but it was difficult to play, and the controls were sometimes unresponsive, so I'd rent before you bought it. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2768 Joined: 18 Sep 2007 | The base concept of the game is really good, the visuals are astonishing in high-def, the sound is great, there are literally hundreds of zombies on-screen sometimes, and the combat is extremely well executed... most of the time. The downside, though, is that there are serious flaws (IMO, of course) in the game design. The game is timered *and* requires leveling up to complete missions; though you can ignore the timer, if you do so you won't be able to unlock the story. This leads to unforgiving gameplay on a first run-through, or exploiting the game save system to grind through a bunch of low-level missions over and over again while accumulating XP. Also, virtually every different action possible has a separate control scheme; walking and melee, then ranged combat, then vehicles. These schemes use radically different thumbstick operations. This makes the learning curve very irregular. The AI is not very smart, which is acceptable for the zombies but not so much for the un-zombified. Oh, and don't bother getting the game at all if you don't have a high-def set; you won't be able to read mission instructions unless you've got at least 720p display, and even my 26" 1080i had me squinting a bit. There's a lot of up-side to Dead Rising (lawnmowing zombies doesn't get old, ever) but there's a lot of downside too. -- Steve |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 628 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | It's totally worth it! I ran it on my 360 back in the day at 480i and had a blast. The first play through will be purely for fun since you have relatively small amount of health. The things to keep in mind is that there are stats, so it's more of a Action RPG than straight Action. The stats go up as you play, and if you die you will keep the stat upgrades that you gathered when you start over. I don't remember it being explained in the manual, but that design choice was very annoying. The only other thing is that the boss battles feel like they rely more on exploiting the game than real skill. |

It's playbale without this but I had a go a few times when I worked at a software store and it drove me nuts, although I am a massive story geek, so losing the plot to screen resolutions hurts. |

Give that a shot and see what you think. There's plenty of fun to be had right there, for example, putting giant lego heads on zombies' heads and watching them stagger around disoriented. All this reminds me, I should be keeping an eye open for a used copy on the cheap -- when my current set of games get old. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1457 Joined: 2 Jan 2008 | Dead Rising is definitely worth it. Don't take that to mean that it's the best game ever, or even that it's destined for greatness, but I'm sure it's no longer going for full price, and the fun it provides is certainly worth the marked-down sticker price. At the end of the day, there really only are about three ways to play the game. Namely, you can do the main quest and try to side quest it up as much as you can, you can achievement hunt, or you can just go nuts on zombies and play with all the different mall weapons (not to mention Frank's own fighting abilities, some of which get pretty fun as you level up). Overall, you'll probably have fun with the game as long as you're not expecting it to be more than it is, which is an accurate recreation of a Romero-esq zombie film, and it has both the good and the bad sides of that equation. - J |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1579 Joined: 9 Jul 2008 | Personally despite the sandbox nature of it i found that since you were stuck in a mall it still felt compressed. I would rather have a Zombie game which takes place in the wider world. Which is why I am waiting for Left 4 Dead. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 571 Joined: 22 Apr 2008 | I played it on the 360, it's a lot of fun and definitely worth a buy. The controls are crappy though, i wonder how the Wii version will (fail to)improve on them. Lawn mowing zombies, or zombie crowd surfing never ever gets old. |

Beat Writer Posts: 151 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | Dead Rising is definitely worth it in moderation. If you want to kill zombies, this is your game. If you want to see the story watch it on the internet. There is more than one save-point, but they are usually way too far apart and have zombies waiting right outside them, so save your game with some weapons in hand. Lots of fun ways to kill zombies, especially in the North Plaza, unfortunately you have to slug through the story to unlock that area. Anyway, I sold this game but recently repurchased it when I saw it's now an "Xbox Classic" or whatever you call it and now only $20. For that price it's worth it. Also, as cool as the katana is, it breaks way too easy, so the fun is short lived. I prefer the post-digger, which has a disproportionately sized gas tank and uses zombies as flails. It will go through plenty (skewering at least 4) of zombies before it runs out. Unfortunatly, it is in the aforementioned North Plaza, and you have to fight a psycho to make the store where you find it safe (yes, you can run past him, but it's easier to kill him so you don't have to dodge grenades on the way to fresh weaponry). |
Beat Writer Posts: 160 Joined: 15 Aug 2008 | I gotta say, I personally did not like this game. It was to frustrating when you wanted to save someone but they wouldn't be saved unless you did something else first, or the girl at the jewelery counter who had to be carried out??? Seriously? I always wanted to save everyone to get the accomplihments and see what all the full game had to offer, but could never make it back to that one single save point. It was frustrating in a non-challenging way. Taking pictures is mad fun tho. |
Beat Writer Posts: 151 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | Oh yes I almost forgot, saving people is really frustrating, because most of them are helpless and if you give them a gun (they have infinite ammo) they will just cry or scream for help. On the upside, when a person dies you can take pictures of them during the mini-cutscene, if someone is really annoying, you can lead them to their death and then capture the memories. |
Paperboy Posts: 46 Joined: 24 Jun 2008 | Funny; I was thinking of writing a review for it. Dead Rising has some absolutely brilliant dark humor and tons of new gameplay elements. And it's fun. Fun! Remember when a game could get away with not trying to be a moving epic or being some pencil-pusher's attempt at a gritty war-story? That said, the controls feel like Capcom forgot they had more buttons they could use and are often stiff. The ally AI is dumber than a half-empty bag of rocks. The ranged combat feels terribly forced and stiff. There are many gameplay elements which do not feel as if they've been integrated very well into a whole. An initial walk-through of the game will likely end in a bad ending unless one is used to Nintendo-Hard difficulty. Despite this, the game is still worth a play. The bosses are amusing, game play is addicting, and simply put, the game lets you suplex a zombie. A game where you can walk up behind a zombie and throw it back with a sickening, wet thud is -fun.- All the little quibbles disappear the first time you realize you can grab a ten foot cactus and use it as a melee weapon. Yes, you'll be grinding for levels in the game. Yes, the controls would be much better if they were tighter. And absolutely; hi-def is almost a pre-req. You will almost certainly have to replay the game a few times, though Capcom made a good move in unlocking new modes after you do so. At first, you can only play 72 hour mode, where you sandbox or else do the main story. If you complete the main plot with the best ending (and this requires hustle), then you may opt to enter 'Overtime' mode which concludes the story with one more 24 hour run through the mall. Finally, survival mode is true sandbox play, driven by a slowly draining health meter which you'll have to restore. None of that matters after the first time you grab a scythe, pop a zombie in the knee, and as it falls down reap its head clean off. |
Beat Writer Posts: 151 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | Roasting zombie's faces with a heated frying pan isn't too shabby either, and throwing pies at their faces, and putting a shower head in their skulls... You have to admit, there's no shortage of interesting ways to kill zombies in this game. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2342 Joined: 28 May 2008 | I've owned Dead Rising for a while now, and I absolutely love it. It's pretty clear that there are some annoying parts of it, such as the stiff controls and the short single-player story, but if you're willing to overlook that, you'll be treated with some of the best zombie mutilating action video games can offer. |

Beat Writer Posts: 128 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | I'm sure it'll be argued with me, but I would say it's one of the must have games on the 360!! It's more fun than you might think, and it's only as short as you want it to be! I restarted the game about 5 times and still couldn't get enough. Just for your sake (and I'm sure you can do this) if you can pick it up for less that £20 (or half it's original value) then do it! |
Paperboy Posts: 24 Joined: 20 Aug 2008 | It's worth it if you get it at a good price. I enjoyed the game and it can become tedious but in the end you allways find yourself going back to it just to see a zombie being cut in half by a katana. Yes the game can be short but you have to remember that you get a overtime and unlimated mode. Overtime mode adding a whole new sotryline keeps the game going and keeps you playing on and on, as for the overtime mode. Well thats bascily the free roming messing about time. In all it's a good buy. Thoughout the game you find yourself laughing your ass off at some of the things you can do. |

What? There's at least 4 other savepoints in the game. Dead Rising is a quality game, you just need to have your eye on the clock sometimes. |

Everyone is saying the game is short but is it good ?
Well is it worth buying ?
