I came across this article on IGN. I can only hope that the new design will finally make the Dpad useful for fighting games. I hope they make the sticks more accurate while they are at it. It's a shame it took so long for them to come out with a fix for this Dpad, it has been understood to be crap for ages what the hell happened? At any rate if this fixes the Dpad I will be overjoyed.

Wait, there weren't any other alternate controlls for the 360?! I see like, a zillion variations of the PS3 and Wii remotes at Fry's, and I've seen those arcade sticks and flight joysticks for the 360, etc. etc.

None of them had a different D-pad? Really?

I'm not trying to downplay the situation, I'm just shocked and I need answers.

There are just not wireless ones. Arcade sticks are plentiful of course. :)

They did.

Hori has made a couple pads of their own and they had a dpad more reminiscent of the SNES/NES d-pad.

The only thing to be excited about is that this is an improvement on the official controller. Improvement is always good. The d-pad always was the Achilles' heel of an otherwise completely fine pad. Maybe after the improvement you can actually play fighting game on it.

Traditional fighting games (Street Fighter, VF, Tekken, DOA and the like) just register 8 directions digitally, so those 360 degrees of analogue movement do you jack. The thing with the current 360 controller, though, is that the sticks might work better since the d-pad sucks so hard. You might try to press down and you're actually be pressing down-forward because of it unless you mod the thing with some cardboard and some sandpaper.

I don't really benefit from this since I'm using an arcade stick for my fighters, but...

It's about damn time. The current d-pad is horrid. They can fix it (And I have) by removing a small ring of plastic around the d-pad.

Your friends don't know the slightest thing about blocking or parrying, do they?

I'm just saying that 360 degrees of movement aren't terribly useful when the game is designed to only register 8 of them. There's a good reason for it too, but I'm not going to it right now, as it would be woefully off topic.

Yes but you can't hold block the whole time.Rapheal vs Rapheal is attack block repeat first to miss block loses and the parry in SC2 sucks.

Not really, the timing on the parry is looser than, say the parry in Street Fighter III and a good player can get some devastating shit through on a parried opponent (a good Ivy player for instance would be buffering a command throw while you're spamming verticals). Also, you have plenty of time to parry it: just block the first 2 hits and the third is a sure parry. You can also sidestep the moves, so...what makes the move so godlike? For anything except the CPU it ain't. A human has plenty of options against that shit.

Now, if it were an infinite like the one Ivy has in SC4, then we'd be talking.

Well I don't play experts and if there is a sidestep just press X. I like beating the game on hardest with one button(winning FTW)

It's a design for limited edition pads apparently.

I... actually really like the default 360 controller. I've always found it ergonomic, solid and satisfying to us.

I wasn't aware that it sucked before.
