Just seen the new Max Payne movie trailer and was glad to see it includes, slow motion, guns, his dead family and some winged creatures that "swoop over the battlefield"?.

I have only played the first 5 or so levels of Max Payne and i don't recall these Valkyries. I also have it on good authority that said beasties don't feature in the sequel either.

So am i missing something, or do movie studios now just take the box art as an original text and then make it up as they please?

Clocked the first, and yes its valkyrie free, never played the second.
i guess they do kinda fit the whole nightmare level factor the game had going on.
I'm not that hopefull but i'm willing to be surprised by this.

The first one had something to do with Ragnarok, that being Norse mythos. I'm sure Valkyries will tie into that somehow.

Don't get your hopes up. Those Valkyries are obviously spawn from hell who came from a portal opened by a bishop with huge boobs and magical powers. Max kills them with a shortgun mounted with a star of david.

...I wonder if you can diss them out for using bullet time *thinks* i mean i guess they pioneered it...

...ragnarock was a nightclub

"Valkyr" was the drug that started it all off in the first game. This appears to be a result of the same, either in the plot or in the writing staff.

I really don't understand fanboys (not talking about OP) who complain about adaptions following the exact story of the source material. I'm a huge Max Payne fan, but I've already played the game, so what's the point in them just copying it word for word into the film? I'd rather they put some surprises in and changed things. Otherwise it would just be like watching someone play the game. I also hope they focus more on the story and mindfuckery than stupid over the top action sequences. I hate action movies.

Yeah but the badness starts when they add in new surprises that aren't surprises at all. I guarantee you that there will be a phase of the movie involving zombies. I also guarantee you that the awesome jazzy moody Max Payne sound will be gone, replaced by thrash metal rock and gangsta rap. they will not revive the comic strip method of storytelling, though they might try do some kind of sin city shtick.

Theses are all things (and by no means all the things, i just don't care about this enough to wrack my brains any further) i can promise you in all honesty to occur. So long as you like apply the word 'zombie' loosely enough.

If Max found himself in a dingy Thai drug den surrounded by bickering hookers with a pimp looking at him with angry, questioning eyes, it'd be a nice surprise. It wouldn't be too far from the general plot but it'd be new enough to open up a whole new line of plot possibilities. come to think of it even now my mind is racing with plot ideas.

Well, when I was watching the trailer I couldn't decide if the Valkyries were real or not. I thought Max was just imagining them, and that they were a physical representation of all the shit he has to go through.

But maybe I'm going in too deep. Whatever.

Max Payne had tons of Norse mythology thrown in (Aesir Corporation, Alfred Woden, Ragnarok, Valkyr and so on) and had trippy drug scenes. I wouldn't be surprised if those valkyries in the trailer clips are Max's hallucinations, just like some of the stuff in the first game is.

I'm actually surprised it doesn't look half bad from the trailers. Will surely give it a go.

I'm not one to jump up and down and call for strict adherences to the source material, however the game franchise had a style that gave it an opportunity to translate perfectly into a gritty film noir, what bothers me is that the film makers seem to of tacked on the supernatural element based on a thin sub theme used when describing the games drug culture. after seeing the trailer i am hoping the valkeries are more of a Metaphorical aspect as well as (like previously mentioned by others) drug based hallucinations...i'm just not an optimist. either way, to quote Ivan : It's a Moot point. i'm looking forward to this film so from a commercial standpoint they have accomplished a minimum requirement.

I don't think they would go that far. Even if it was part of a hallucination (which I'm hoping is the case with these Valkyrie dealys) it would be rediculous and probably ruin the film.

Unfortunately you're probably right about that.

And this. Although I don't suppose it would be out the question for them to do a bit of it in the comic book style. Probably a flashback or something. Which would be awesome.

Agreed, a quick trip to Wikipedia gives a list of many Norse references made throughout the first game (though as I recall there were not many in the second). I always got the impression from the trailer that the Valkyries were more of a symbolic gesture than anything real or tangible. More for the viewer and maybe something Max Payne sees in hallucinations.

Valkyries take the souls of those that die in battle to Valhalla, and a lot of people seem to die rather violently around Max Payne, and keeping with the thematic elements of the original they are not wholly out of place.

First of all, this isn't really gaming related and probably belong is off topic. Second, I'm nearly positive that the valkyries are hallucinations on Max's part. Bishop is definitely right, I think that's just Max having nightmares or a trippy dream around people's time of death, so those are put in there to keep with the strong norse mythology elements.

Please bear in mind Max Payne was fairly liberal with references to Norse mythology (Valkyr, Ragnarock, etc). It isn't going to go crazy with the mythology - consider it a metaphor for the creepy 'taint' of the drugs and corruption.

(Having read the original script for this, believe me, the final cut's going to be a lot less crazy if I'm any judge.)
