@ Mr. OP: OH PLEASE JESUS NOT HARRY POTTER...

That being said, a game based on classic literature could be quite interesting. Horror games seem to be lacking alot these days. How about something from Edgar Allan Poe?

Dragonlance, maybe. It might be difficult incorporating all the little parts to it, and shifting from perspective to perspective.

Can you imagine a space game based off Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Oh man, that would be something else.

I want to play a harry potter themed rpg in which you play as a random student at the school. There is so much potential for an AMAZING rpg in that school and you can choose to fight with harry or against him or something. Theres loads of directions you can take with that idea.

I know the title says fictional worlds but I saw this documentary once where they made an animation of Rome and the camera started off in the distance and you could see the entire city, then it zoomed in and you could see the crowded streets, shops, people, horses, etc. I think it would be amazing to make a GTA style game based on Rome.

I know Obsidian is supposed to be working on it, but I think a survival/horror game based on the "Aliens" franchise would be awesome.

And though BioWare already took a pretty solid swing at it, we need more Chinese martial arts RPGs. Or I need more Chinese martial arts RPGs at any rate.

Dragonlance? Obviously never heard of Heroes of the Lance for the NES. Sooooooo bad.
Aliens: You need to play space hulk.
Salvatore: Essentially, I would consider Baldurs Gate to be what a R.A. Salvatore book would be in game form. Since the companions are in these games, but not the main characters, it's a definate plus. Also the Icewind Dale games are great for this too. I don't know what book series would best fit Planescape Torment. That game is way too much cool to be contained by a simple book.

Besides alaxianlegend.com (shameless plug for a personal project that I'd love to see done as a game), I have to agree with Altorin's sentiment that licensed IPs make terrible games.

Hmm, It'd be interesting to see someone try and make a game based off of the world in The Chronicles of Amber series. It's probably impossible for the current systems, but it'd be interesting to watch the world change as you move through it, one world merging into another as you focus on a specific setting.

On a more realistic note, Ender's Game could provide an enjoyable gaming experience what with ship battles and strategy combined with zero-G close quarters combat.

Altorin:
Truthfully, I like gameworlds crafted specifically for the game.

Games based on someone elses IP are usually god-awful, and if I had a favorite book series, I certainly wouldn't want some game developer wiping their ass with it.

I agree completely, worlds in the gaming area are best created from scratch to suit the game that takes place in it. Aside from that great worlds for games vary on the genre, a Tolkienesque world suits fantasy RPG's greatly while a post apocalyptic world suits FPS's all that matters is all in the genre.

The world of Neromancer as an Action-RPG.
The world of the Forgotten Realms, not the new one, the old one as an MMO.
The world of RIFTS as an MMO.
That is all I can think of for now.

Eventhough I can't think of everyone who could pull it off, I would love to see a game based on either the Wheel of Time or A Song of Ice and Fire.

But I also think that Altorin is right. Most games based on movies or books dosen't turn out that good.

You're in luck. In 1999 they released a game based on the Wheel of Time.. I remember reading a review of it in a Dutch PCZone. Impressive game for its time, though sales were hammered into the ground by Quake and Unreal Tournament.

The fact that someone created the masterpiece of Planescape: Torment makes me pretty sure that a Chronicles of Amber game could be done well. possible. not likely.

As for worlds.
The world of "His Majesty's Dragon" as a flight simulator/ELITE/sid meir's Pirates type game
the world of "Bazil Broke-Tail" as a small squad rts similar to myth or Mechcommander
"Deathstalker" as a 3d person beat-em up style RPG/something like Diablo/or FPS like F.E.A.R.

Though, i'd really like a proper new SpellJammer or Ravenloft game.

OH and more white wolf games Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines was brilliant (though buggy) i want a Werewolf, Mage or Hunters game in a similar vein.

Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? would make a good setting. Don't think i've seen a half decent cyberpunk game since Deus Ex.

I thought the 1999/2000 Blade Runner game on PC was very cool, albeit a bit hermetic sometimes.

Aliens: You need to play space hulk.

Space Hulk Vengeance of the Blood Angels (didn't play the first one, I think there were two) was horribly hard, slow and not so much horror as a tactical, squad-based FPS with way too much enemies...

On the other hand, consider Aliens -The Comic Book on PC, which was part adventure, part survival, and Aliens : Resurrection on PS1 was a kind of FPS/Survival which gloomy setting reminded me vaguely of System Shock. In fact, weren't it for the dual analog controls, I'd like to convert the latter for my PSP.

Discworld has three adventure games and a MUD, and those are the mediums in which it works, I suspect.

Yes but they're pretty old and i think it would be interesting to see what a good developer could do with such a title. But in general I don't think this sort of idea can work - if its meant for a book it should stay there because something always gets lost in translation, just like movies to games or visa versa.

I do agree, many of my favorite games (such as shadow of the colossus or phsyconaughts) are based on original IP's and most of the time i think that is for the best.
However we have seen a lot of really bad games made of popular IP's and I think this is a bit of an injustice in some ways. I think we can ask for better, I really want to see new things done in games and I believe one of the simplest ways to innovation is to re-imagine well known archiotypes. Popular stories mixed with well made games, preferably with some level of involvement from the authors could provide this.
And I would just love to have an excuse to spend more time in some of these universe's.

oh and, Zealazny's Amber = Win
and Grand Theft Chariot, done well with a beautifull expansive city, a huge variety of vehicles, that would be fun, which is kinda what i'm looking for in like a Discworld game, some one build Ankh Morpork, so i can explore it please.

Neverwinter Nights?

That was good but it was not good enough IMHO. They need the whole Realms. I was always very disappointed when they set the D&D MMO in that lame Ebberon world. It stunk like ass. FR kicks that world ass any day of the week. Of course if they made a new FR MMO it would be based on the new horrible and trashed FR in 4th Edition. Now that sinks like ass. Come to think of it, they had better not do it because it would be terrible.

Probably Warhammer 40.000, yeah. The world that the guys at Black Library are creating is amazingly massive and versatile, and seems perfect for an MMO, or a Mass Effect-esque RPG.

As much as I HATE the Miniatures game... Black Library are doing a HELL of a job with the Pen and Paper, it really brings the setting down to a more personal level and I would snatch up a Mass Effect Like Warhammer 40k RPG in a heart beat.

As I said in another thread, I would LOVE to see an RPG based off of Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. Wouldn't know what the best format would be, you'd need to have Airship Combat in there to make it truly fun and not just a old fashioned JRPG Playable Movie.

30 Days Of Night - Kind of like Dead Rising, only you get the whole town and have to survive 30 days. Hell, make it drop in/drop out online too.

Battle Royale - Online or offline, you create your student and are each assigned a random weapon. Would make things completely unpredictable.

Battlestar Galactica - The new Galactica. I just wanna hop in a Mk VII and frack up some toasters.

Sin City - Granted, it would be like GTA in black and white, but add in Max Payne style comic cutscenes, and it's a winner.

Starship Troopers - I know, I know. But I want a good game. With Skinnys and power armour, like in the book.

I suspect that if anyone with game developing talent was able to understand the world in Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle In Time" we might actually wind up with a somewhat decent game on our hands, but failing that, if you've read it would you not want to play through a world based off of Jack Chalker's Well World? Who doesn't want to explore 1560 serparely zoned hexagons each with their own species and miniature world?

I think The Harry Potter games shouldn't be about Harry Potter. Sure they could have a cameo with him, but I think the Harry Potter Universe would be better suited to be a sand box game of sorts. Maybe have a free roaming world with Hogwarts, Godrics Hallow, Ministry of Magic as one of the many places you can explore etc kind of like how Oblivion is set up. Maybe create a character and you can set his age which would determine where he would start out in the game (Adults start in Ministry kids/teenagers start in Hogwarts). I dunno just my 2 cents and change.

Like what KoTOR did with the Star Wars universe. Maybe more of a linear RPG, where you study to become an Auror (that's the only way I can think of to generate conflict).

I also want Ender's Game. Here's how it would play out:

It would be incredibly hard to pull off, especially a 3D space interface, but I think it's possible.

I like you. I wouldn't maybe if someone took a crack at some kind of Cthulhu Mytho's type setting.
