Gone Gonzo Posts: 1110 Joined: 22 Aug 2008 | too early to decide, but i hope its good. It seems like they're trying to expand of the GeOW chainsaw executions type of thing y making it a regular occurances. not an overly bad idea, it's different than most games...I just hope they expand it enough with the finished product to make it worth it. but since I'm a sucker for warhammer 40k...I'm buying this flop or not. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1324 Joined: 26 Mar 2008 | Ever since Space Hulk I've been waiting for a WH40K game like this. The only issue is you'd be locked in to one chapter. Hope it's the Dark Angels but it doesn't really look like it; looks more like the Ultramarines. Hard to tell with the grainy video. It does look very GeOW with the "roadie run" and chainsword. |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 741 Joined: 12 Apr 2008 | Another Firewarrior would write off the credibility of making any more non-RTS Warhammer 40k games. Alright my fanboy question: Will we have the Warrior's Bite? |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 548 Joined: 21 Jun 2008 | The game looks pretty good to me, it's good that they are trying to capture the gothic feel of the 40k universe since it's really darn unique. The developers seem to be on the right track, hopefully the melee aspect won't be tedious and boring after a while, hopefully they set up different creative opportunities. Looking forward to it. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 741 Joined: 12 Apr 2008 | Actually replaying it I really hope they make Chaos Marines more aggressive and make the traitor guard more numerous. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 1 Joined: 19 Jun 2008 | hope it has a huge battle mission with a whole battlion of spsce marines vs chaos marines |
Press Junketeer Posts: 392 Joined: 12 Aug 2008 | It looks very promising but yea its way to early to tell. Its only in early alpha but like Eyclonus said more traitor guards would be good. They also need to die much faster, one swipe with a chainsword vs a traitor guard should destroy them regardless of if there blocking or not. That cineaction or whatever he called it also looks like it may get annoying after a while. Depends how well they pull it off and how fluid it is. The pauses in combat just felt to long in that video for the moment though. |

Good point; hopefully they'll streamline it to make it more fluid. I also hope they don't make the ranged combat simply trivial. The bolter bullets looked like they did as much damage as throwing spitballs. Also it would be cool if you could pick up a heavy flamer or assault cannon. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 392 Joined: 12 Aug 2008 | Yea lore/fluff wise bolter bullets even hand bolter bullets are basically rocket propelled projectiles. One such bullet should actually be blowing chunks out of a lightly armoured enemy. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 674 Joined: 5 Jul 2008 | Hrrrmm... I don't like it when a game changes the camera on you to see a mini-cinematic that you HAVE to use....and this game seems to do it even more than Assassin's Creed! :/ I'll have to see a more final version before I make my verdict. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 876 Joined: 13 May 2008 | That in-game camera "cinemaction" is going to piss me off if that isn't configurable out! But it looks good so far. Edit: Oh yes... and there's a lot of God of War influence in this I think... |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2788 Joined: 10 Apr 2008 | Let me tell you, I've been waiting for someone to make a WH40K game, especially about space marines so i'm excited. However, if the battles are not like in excess of 10000 peeps in each army then i'm going to say they ruined it. It looks bloody awesome, though things they need to improve on are obviously the alpha explosion graphics, but also things like having one repeat animation of a craft flying through every now and then, it'd be good if they could mix it up by having AI control the dogfights etc, or something. The main thing they need to do on this game is honestly not fuck it up - they can't take short cuts, and i think that, like mr. yahtzee preaches those parts where u need to click a button in time are crappy and they need to rework their gameplay. IT does seem a little generic - but then again so is the WH40K universe, it's about big dudes fighting, the beauty of it is in the RP, the lore, the feel of said fights and that's what they've gotta pull off. I think those cinemactions should be random |

Which was an RTS. Not a shooter. Anyways, it looks solid enough. Those killmoves he does are kinda iffy... I don't want to have the camera switching around like that, and it takes a little too long to go back to normal mode, but whatever. EDIT: Then again, if they make the camera swing instead of cut, then it would be pretty awesome. There has to be more than 1 killing move per enemy type though. It is very very early to say though. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 392 Joined: 12 Aug 2008 | Even though in games like Rome total war you can have like 6000 people on screen, I think the problem is not the graphics but the AI. Those 6000 men are split into like 20-30 units of men. If you had 6000 individual men with there own AI I think your cpu would melt a hole through your floor. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2788 Joined: 10 Apr 2008 |
I don't think the people/battles i propose would require AI either, i mean those battles take place defending hives that measure in kilometers and such. I think R:TW pulled off the whole 'fighting' thing (hell it has half of the whole game) even with those particular AI quirks, i think another battle-centered game can focus around that alot. If you want a more proper example of what i'm thinking of then take spartan:total warrior, only with more units since ei'm pretty sure the xbox 360 and it's updated hardware is stronger than the xbox >.> |
Anonymous Source Posts: 4 Joined: 29 Jul 2008 | Personally... I think this game is going to fail badly. It took a Gears of War aspect to it, which is good. But they focused on Melee as they said, and it looks bad. Also about the RTS; Space Marines, WERE RANGED, NOT MELEE. The graphics are okay, nothing special as of today. The camera in 3rd person is tolerable, but if you see the video it already looks like trouble; along with the mini cinematic's between melee kills. I don't see anything positive about this game. We have here... another Fire Warrior. At least to me it seems. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2737 Joined: 13 Feb 2008 | Oooh! Oooh! I just thought of something! Remember Savage? That RTS/FPS/brawler with the man vs beast thing? Yeah, well basically putting the brawler/shooter elements into a Dawn of War game. This wouldn't have to be too sophisticated, just have a decent hitbox and playable units. It would basically be a useless little feature, but it would be lots of fun in multiplayer. Your two teammates are commanding their armies and there you are, leading the charge with them. Pointless, unachievable, but awesome. |

Paperboy Posts: 26 Joined: 11 Jun 2008 | Looks like nothing but an eye candy game. They seemed to have focused more on cinematic shit like killing an enemy than the actually fleshing out the battle system a little more. Looks cool, probably plays like repetitive crap. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2788 Joined: 10 Apr 2008 |
Why? Do you recognize some heraldic imagery on the armour? EDIT: oh 'should' be space wolves, misread sorry
I agree that things like third person cameras and too many min-cutscenes can be gay, but space marines are both ranged and close combat. I defiantly think they've got the right idea having the ranged combat as a means to an end. You can mow down the little guys with your bolter and that's fine - but you simply must duke it out in melee when it comes to the chaos marines etc. That said as i said before the whole button-timing sequence thing is disgusting |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3584 Joined: 6 Aug 2008 | Looks really good, hope they work on the controls a bit as they seem a bit complicated. Can't wait. Edit: If it's Blood ravens or Ultramarines I will kill someone. There's dozens of chapters, pick a new one dammit. |
King of the Yetis Posts: 2530 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | A few points... 1: The game looks awesome. 2: A leak of a super secret project eh? Then why does it have a running commentary stuffed with more buzzwords than a Nintendo convention? 3: Buzzwords. Seriously. Cinemactions? Orchestrating your ballet of death!? That doesn't make any sense. It's a space Marine! |

The character looks like a marine sergeant. Much better as a melee fighter as he only carries a bolt pistol and chainsword. In tabletop, Marines are equally good at ranged or melee fighting. Seriously though, you want to make a melee focused 40k game, the player character should really be an Ork. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1466 Joined: 4 Jun 2008 | I can see what they're trying to do and I think that the focus on melee would be pretty good so long as they don't completly forget the ranged part of the combat (after all, as some people have said, Space Marines are skilled in both ranged and melee combat like most players). Of course, all of these innovations for combat and design will be for nothing if they miss out the requirement of a good storyline. If it ends uo being an endless repetition of cleaving aliens with no real motivation or reason, no amount of pretty design will save it then. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2290 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 | It looks pretty cool for a first build but why on god's earth is it 3rd person action not 1st person shooter? Space Marine is the perfect excuses for a shooter character who can soak big quantities of damage and take on everything. It should be going into special 3rd bits for special combat things not as a default. I want to shoot Orks in the face with a bolter damnit! Argh, well fingers crossed it will be okay at what it's trying to do. |

Paperboy Posts: 12 Joined: 14 Nov 2007 | This looks promising I've really been waiting for a good non-RTS Warhammer game for a long time. and at least Chaos is in it if not a playable group (I play them in the table top game). It would be nice to see how many of the other races would be like to fight against like the agile and quick Eldar, after all there are lots of armies in the game it would be a shame if others didn't make a big appearance. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1849 Joined: 23 Dec 2007 | Why the space marines.... why...their entire existance is an abomination to the term 'Game Balance' and in general they have all the personality of a mediocre grade of mineral ore. |

Agreed It would be nice to see other races... |

dissappointed! Their trying to make a Captain of a squad a main melee focus in the game, at least thats what it looks like at this moment. You should "i agree" be an ork or maybe a khorn berserker, at least an assault marine or something which really :does: have a mainly melee purpose. |

On the other hand it's XBox360. If it doesn't also release for Windows XP I will never play it. Hopefully they don't make the same mistake Bungie did. |

Yay? nay? Too early to decide?
I'm conflicted. Part of me wants it to be good, and another part of me wants it to be a big flop.
