Paperboy Posts: 12 Joined: 5 Sep 2008 | I've been looking forward to this game for a while now, but there is always a tingling worry in the back of my mind, RTS games and console controllers just dont compliment each other. But I will definately give it a try when it is released |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3627 Joined: 25 Jan 2008 | Ain't gonna say Halo is crap, I rather liked Halo1, but right now, in my books, Bungie is crap. If Halo Wars doesn't release for the PC (XP Compatible), I will never get to play it. They already screwed us over with Halo2Vista, I hold no hopes on Halo3 and wouldn't get it anyways until Halo2 can run in XP (Why get parts 1 and 3 w/o 2?), so if they continue to ignore the PC gamer demographic, f**k Bungie. Looks pretty though. |

Yeah i know what you mean, i still think it would run better on a PC, but hey it is damn fucking pretty as you said. The control system looks far better than C&C3 so i geuss it at least can't be that bad :) |

Thats sort of my mindset too, i want to give it try before i buy it, i'd be surprised if there wasn't a demo released on XBL. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1169 Joined: 21 May 2008 | I will only get it if the Covenant are playable. |
PROBATION Posts: 889 Joined: 16 Aug 2008 | I don't know whether to get it or not. For me it's a toss-up between C&C3 and Halo Wars. User was put on probation for: Letters to the Editor: The Terabyte Tenderloin. (7 days) |

I'm pretty sure they are, they have different colour sint he screenshots (like all gold blue red etc) which would mean that they were most liekly screenshots from multiplayer meaning yesyou can play the covenant. I'd be really surprised if you couldn't. |

Huh? What do you mean? C&C3 was a crap console RTS so your not going to buy Halo Wars? |
Muckraker Posts: 344 Joined: 2 Jul 2008 | I'll probably get it, but I fear it will do what all console RTSes do and make the (A) button do the job of 'select'. This is awkward because you end up constantly shifting your thumb off and back on to the Right Thumbstick. Please, please, make it be the Right Bumper - or at least make it so that the controls can be remapped... |

Last I looked, Age of Empires and subsequently Halo Wars are made by Ensemble Studios, not Bethesda.... |

I strongly suspect you will never get to play it. The point of making Halo Wars was to design an RTS that will work on consoles, specifically with the controllers; porting it "back" to a mouse&keyboard defeats that, and then you'd get a bunch of whining that it's "inferior" or "dumd-down" [sic] game from the console-tards to boot as PC players thrash about with an interface designed for dual-analog and d-pad inputs. Ensemble has nothing to gain (aside from a few bucks) by porting Halo Wars to the PC... and given how MGS is working these days, even if they did it'd never get ported to XP instead of Vista in any case. -- Steve |

Eh... you are talking about an RTS, its a bit different, believe it or not i get tired on mercilessly gunning down waves enemies in FPS or third person shooters every once and a while a resolve to command legions of troops to do it for me instead. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 842 Joined: 28 May 2008 | Yea I think I'll be buying this one. I like the whole Halo universe and it has been ages since I've bought a good RTS. Plus the cinematic trailers look cool as hell (which although I know the actual game will be nothing like them) and have peaked my interest in it somewhat. |

Ha ha you aren't alone, 5 longs year (in the words of yahtzee) sucked me in like a thousand dollar whore and really braced me for what to expect from this game. |

Ah thats a really good point actually, i'd like to be able to remap my controls, left trigger to paint units would be nice. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 557 Joined: 3 Sep 2008 | You know you can buy USB keyboards and plug them into your 360 right? Dunno if they will be compatible with Halo Wars though. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 83 Joined: 15 Aug 2008 | Really? You mean any USB keyboard? I gotta say i didnt actually know that, though you still have to have a desk in front of you to use the mouse properly etc lol. |

Off topic: It didn't quote correctly because of the '/' in your first tag. the slash means 'end' On topic: I think it'll be very interesting what Ensemble does with the controls... I don't see how they'll overcome the shortcomings with the controller, but I do have faith in Ensemble... THey're the company that got me into gaming in a big way in the first place. |

Yes, but not to actually control games. A USB keyboard will work just the same way as that plug-in message pad thumbboard thingy you can get; it'll let you type file names and text messages only. I don't know of a single game that uses either to control the action on-screen. -- Steve |

Paperboy Posts: 42 Joined: 4 Sep 2008 | I don't ask this to be snarky, or sarcastic or mean but just to ask a serious question. What is the appeal of Halo, when to me, all I see is a story you can find in a dozen over video games and sub par gameplay. ...I guess that does sound a bit snarky and mean but I actually had to revise it once to make it sound that nice. |
King of the Yetis Posts: 1956 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | I am, unfortunately, not an RTS kind of gentleman but if those little touches of life (dues popping around the sheds for a smoke, units doing pushups etc) are actually generated randomly and in every base rather than just scripted ones it's going to be a very vibrant looking game. I want to play as the flood though. FLOOD RUSH! KEKEKEKE |

I agree. Console RTS's just don't work. They never have, and never will. If they release it on PC, I may consider getting it, even though I suck at the RTS in general. And, there must be the ability to play as the Covenant. Killing Spartans would make my day! |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1126 Joined: 17 Jun 2008 | I think a console RTS could work, but it would still be lacking compared to the PC. Really the only console I'd consider playing an RTS on is the Wii. |

So is anyone else planning to get Halo wars?
I've just seen the new screenshots and to be honest its everything i've come to expect of Ensemble, the Age of Empires series was excellent and im glad Ensemble have been tasked with executing a new RTS for Halo. The attention to detail is stunning, i've never seen such good graphics in an RTS, mythical splendour of Forerunner worlds littered with ruins combined with natural beauty, graceful convenant spires and rugged human machinery.
If this game turns out to be half-balanced i think it will be excellent, they've got the graphics, now we need the gameplay.
Lets leave out all the Halo is crap BS thats flys around here, because this is an RTS and its made by Ensemble, and i damn you to hell to try and criticise AoE.
