If "flying" through space counts, Freespace 2.
Star fox 64, again pressing the deffination of "Flying"
I like games that let me fly by my own power (i.e. no plane). In fact, any game that allows me to do so usually wins major points, even if the game itself is terrible. Super Mario 64 was the first game where I really felt like I was flying. It *ruled*. - J
I'd say Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe was my favourite flying game; not super-realistic, but the combat was both fun and rewarded real-world tactics... and at the time the graphics were unbeaten. -- Steve
There's a game called 'Cloud' which I believe is still a free download that encompasses nothing but flying around.
The original Wing Commander is my favorite of all, followed by Ace Combat 6 (Never played the first 5 Ace Combats).
I still have fond memories of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat
Ace Combat:Belkan War because of the storyline(Fuckin epic)
I have vauge memories of me playing that as a kid... D: As for favourite "Flying Game" I'd say either IL-2 Sturmovik, or Lock On
I've not played that but I was gonna say Secret Weapons Over Normandy. Wasn't at all realistic either but it was quite a laugh.
TIE Fighter. | |
I really liked Aces High II And it was free! =D
That game was awesome It has yet to be topped, in my opinion.
I really liked Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies. Unfortunately I sold it, and I loved the game so much. Even my friend was surprised that I sold it!
Ace Combat 04:Shattered Skies
That game was lots of fun! But for me it'll have to be Tyrian... 2D side scrolling flying game. (you were in a space ship and that flys so it counts for me god damnit!)
Heroes of the Pacific & Blazing Angels 2. I could never get into Ace Combat, but I did quite enjoy Heatseeker on the PS2. I'd really like to see a WW1 flying game, like a modern (generation wise) update of Wings. I loved the narrative & atmosphere of the original.
Really not a fan of flying games, but the flying sections in Ratchet and Clank were pretty fun.
Star Fox 64. | |
Lylat Wars (starfox 64 for you yanks) was a great flying game. So was Crimson Skies apart the fly around a giant temple part. That was just lame.
Terminal Velocity would be my flying game of choice. Fairly old game now but it had air units to fight and bases to destroy and some trippy ass tunnels that I'd always crash into the entrance when trying to go into them. Still need to play Freespace 2 though, I have had it recommended many times just not got round to it yet.
I haven't played many but i liked both the Blazing Angels games for 360.
I liked Crimson Skies for its retro pulp aesthetic and easy to pick up arcadey gameplay. Most flying games turn me off with their ridiculously complicated controls. Definitely an under appreciated genre though. Oh and TIE Fighter cause it's the first Star Wars game I can remember where you got to be the bad guys.
I love the tilt flying controls in the PS3 versions. The BA games are actually my second and third favorite flying games.
Some blasts from the past: 'Modern day' games: I didn't like the follow-up to Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (Secret Weapons over Normandy). Didn't have the same charm and Crimson Skies simply was way better and funnier. Personal favourite though, by a long mile, is T.F.X. Simply because I understood it completely. I've tried modern military sims, like Lock-On and Falcon 4.0. Didn't get into it and, funnily enough, both games are re-released with all the numerous bugs fixed (Flaming Cliffs and Allied Force respectively). I feel a bit robbed now, owning the original games and me having to shell out more cash to get the fixed versions (so I didn't). If you want Lock-On or Falcon 4.0, go for Flaming Cliffs and Allied Force.
Star Fox 64 and Ace Combat, erm think it was Ace Combat 1, or 2 I used to have. Think they've released a few more since then.
Crimson Skies. Because, y' know, it actually works.
I can't believe I'm going to come out and admit this, but Superman Returns was, by far, my favorite experience with flying in gaming. Yes, the game sucked, like most Superman titles... But by god, the flying was damn near flawless this time around. It was silky smooth, and I found it incredibly satisfying to just go tearing through the crowded streets of Metropolis, shooting above the skyscrapers to break the sound barrier, and then rocketing back to the streets. Outside of that, I guess I'd go with Star Fox Assault, because I genuinely feel that what few flying parts it had improved on 64's mechanics. Also, Spider-Man 2, although I'm not sure you could count that as flying, per se.
My sentiments exactly, Though I liked European Air War
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was one of my favorites.
PilotWings 64. I'd say Elite, but despite being totally awestruck by it when it came out, I came to realize that the gameplay involved too many long waits.
Being mostly a console gamer, I've not really played any flying games since G-Police 1 and 2. Considering how awesome they were, I doubt that I really need to play any newer ones... Just a perfect balance between the confusion of 3D-space shooters and the maddening frustration of realistic flight sims.
The Microsoft Flight Simulator is a great flying game, no combat but it's the best flying simulator out there.
Freespace 2 definately

Whats your favorite flying game?Mine is Ace Combat 6:Fires of liberation
