Paperboy Posts: 25 Joined: 11 Apr 2008 | I remember, once, when the news people were interviewing someone via secondlife about pedophilia groups (flavour of the month here). I died a little inside when I saw the guy had a tigeress avatar ;_; Not really a videogame, but worth mentioning. |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 633 Joined: 25 Jun 2008 | I can't really think of any example of video games in the news which would cause me to cringe. Maybe I'm just made of sterner stuff. The only situation I could imagine would be in a week of nothing happening anywhere in the world, at all, my bedroom bedroom being infiltrated the world's media & the story being about me cracking one off as Niko gets a lap dance or uses a prostitute in GTA 4. Breaking news. British man, 28, pleasures himself to Rockstar's crime & sex simulator. Film at 11. Watching video game programmes can be pretty cringe-worthy though. |
PROBATION Posts: 889 Joined: 16 Aug 2008 | The media does it for ratings don't believe it's even true. I have a friend he deals drugs. Steals cars and stabbed his ex. He's in jail for 6 years. (I knew him before that) He didn't play any video games. It's just parents who are too much of fuck-wits to take care of their children so they blame games to try to convince everyone they are worthless sacks of shit. Also people who commit crimes blame video-games so they can get a reduced sentence. This is all about worthless sacks of shit that can't take the blame from what they have done. It should be good for all parties involved, since Sony fans and cancer victims get to finally stretch their legs out for once. I would just like to add, I don't hate the Xbox 360. I am not a troll." Gone Gonzo Posts: 1019 Joined: 9 Jul 2008 | Yep, I hate it when the media tries to mention something about video games. And then of course I have to watch what they say and further prove that the media knows nothing about video games and all they can say about it is useless fear-mongering. I hate the media. And the whole Mass Effect sex thing is a perfect example of the worst. I mean not knowing what they're talking about and exaggerating the violence and influence on children is one thing, but complete lies? Where do they think they get their information from that they can start saying all these things and criticizing them when they dont even exist? Disgusting and painful to watch. |
Muckraker Posts: 300 Joined: 23 Jul 2008 | A lesser acknowledged relationship between games and the media is the one that comes Christmas time, or whenever a new console is being released. The hype and buzz itself can sometimes reach nation news, which almost always has some ditzy news anchor going "Oh wow, my son wants (insert game) so bad, tee hee hee!" Bleh. |

I remember hearing a long while ago about an America's Army player helping some victims in a car crash. Says the game's medical training helped him. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 402 Joined: 12 Jul 2008 | I don't cringe, but I might snear a bit. The media definitely has something against videogames, and I saw that reflected in my parents' view of videogames. They thought that I was an exception to the videogames=violence "rule." Fortunately, I was able to refer them to some of the articles on the Escapist that deal with that issue, and they began to revise their stances. |

Close, but its always more mysterious and scary. "Is your kid turning into a killer? Find out at 9!" |

Press Junketeer Posts: 453 Joined: 9 Jul 2008 | I cringe. Especially when it has parents saying how "confusing" the rating system is. Adam Sessler put it best, "Let's see what the GTAIV label says: 'Rated M, 17+'. Let's see what the back says, 'Intense violense, partial nudity, drud and alcohol use, (etc).' Where's the fucking mystery?" |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2099 Joined: 14 Sep 2007 | If it's in a negative light, I cringe with enough force to scare away small animals and scatter paper. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 6983 Joined: 28 Nov 2007 | Yes, because the media has yet to understand two facts: 1. Games are not all for kids. That big black M has a deeper meaning to it (note: will actually play certain M games with my younger brother...after I have decided if they have anything that would ruin his psyche at all) 2. They (the reporters) most likely heard the same things growing up listening to rock and roll, with apparently no mental harm. Therefore, what are the chances that the new scapegoat will actually have an effect? On a little side note, am I a bad brother for letting my brother play/watch me play M games if I have played them first to decide if there is anything that he shouldn't see, instead of just forbidding him from all M games? |
Paperboy Posts: 22 Joined: 6 Sep 2008 | I heard the media once using the argument "In videogames, you are in control of who to kill, you can look at someone and say 'im going to kill them'" This apparently, is wrong and causes you to be violent in real life But putting in a Rambo DVD whilst thinking "I cant wait to watch all of those gory deaths" is A-OK! |

This is a magazine, most of them are editors and journalists. Only they know what the are talking about, as they most likely play games. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 523 Joined: 10 Aug 2008 | I voted "lols :)" for no reason. I actually think that it depends if it's praise, accomplishments, tragedy or a parody of the game in question that motivates my opinion. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 385 Joined: 21 Jun 2008 | Isn't it fun when uninformed people start pointing the finger? I can't believe they've started to blame Metal again, what a bunch of butt. People are just afraid of the unknown or something that is new, if it's incredibly popular there has to be aspects of it that are totally bad for you. It's a load of rubbish. To answer the thread, I not only cringe but I shift in my seat uncomfortably each time I see anything game related on the news. Though when I heard that Halo 3 was outselling pretty much everything when it came out, I have to admit I was proud of the games industry that day even though I don't really care for the Halo franchise. |

I've gotten to cringe when a Video Game's name is in the news, minus the Wii
