What is the best game ever made? I set this question on the myspace forums and everyone kept saying WoW
So please people some variation in the opinions, I'm sure Wow is a very good game but come on, what do you think the best game is?

Deja vu here... I think there is already a thread like this. Too bored to search :P

So I will act polite and answer, my personal favorite game was... oh wait! No one has made a game that was perfect for me! lol I loved Shadow of the Colossus though :)

To me it was KOTOR. Mainly because it's one of about 5 games i can play anytime and still enjoy.

I'm going to have to go by genre on this one

Platformer: Super Metroid (SNES)
RPG: Chrono Trigger (SNES), honorable mention to FFVI (SNES) and KOTOR (Xbox/PC)
FPS: I would say Portal and an honorable mention to Bioshock, both for the PC and 360.. I'm going to get eaten alive for it, but I'm not an FPS gamer generally speaking, and those are the ones that have struck a cord recently
MMO: Probably WoW, although Asheron's Call was really fun too

Right this second, if I had to name one game.. It would be Portal, but I'm just so infatuated with that game right now, and that's how my mind works.

Yeah Mines would probably be Portal or...the whole Metal Gear Solid
I loved the first one didn't really like the second one loved the third one and the fourth one i have yet to play :D

FANTASY WORLD DIZZY
I'm guessing anyway since every other opinion I have about games (Except Mass Effect) gets reiterated to me every week by Yahtzee.

Although to be serious, I'd say Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions. I just loved the little missions it gave you to do, especially the Genola mission... I can still play those levels constantly and enjoy it.

I'm going to spite you and say WoW for your uncreativity.

I'm gonna have to go by genre as well:

RPG: Final Fantasy VII (PSX) - The game that made me a gamer, also Fable (Xbox) - I've played this game so many times and just can't get tired of it.

FPS: Tied between Halo:Combat Evolved (Xbox) and Half-Life 2 (PC). I wasn't a fan of the genre before I played Halo, and Half-Life 2 was a simply amazing game.

Strategy/Puzzle: Portal (PC) - I don't put this under the FPS category even though I guess it technically is one, it's still a great game though.

Platformer: Kirby Superstar (SNES) - I spent many hours playing this at my neighbor's house when I was a kid.

Kirby Super Star

Bloody Hells AGAIN?!

Deus Ex.

Thread over.

yeah, I was going to put Portal in the Puzzle genre as well, but I couldn't do it.

I know that's what it is, but I still couldn't.

Altorin:

Good idea.

RPG: Morrowind
MMO: Guild Wars (even though it's shit now, it's still better than all the other grindfests, because this one doesn't make me cough up 12 euro's every month)
3D Platformer: Prince of Persia Sands of Time
2D Platformer: Metroid Fusion
Fighting: Guilty Gear X2
Music: Elite Beat Agents
FPS: Unreal (honorable mention to Medal of Honor Allied Assault and the Jedi Knight series, plus Brothers in Arms ànd Painkiller)
RTS: Age of Empires II (honorable mention to Settlers II)
Sim: Theme Hospital
Racing: TrackMania Nations

Saphatorael:
o

I loved guild wars but it did get pretty shit. i wish more MMO's would be free

I remember when Escapist forums was a place where you can participate in interesting threads, where each one of them was unique and interesting. WTF is happening?! Its either kids palying violent video games now or "the greatest whatever thing in video games". But anyway, in my opinion Half-life 2 is the greatest single-player game ever made. As for MP, either COD4 or halo 3, dunno, guess I just need to play more MP.

My favourite was a little ps1 rpg called "Use the fucking search button before starting a worthless topic 2: The lockening"

Did you play the sequel, "The Wrath of Nilcypher"? Man, that was fucking fun.

Oh yeah. I loved the part where he marched into the topic and said.

"PITHY COMMENT"

then locked the fuck out of it.

you guys don't have to post in the threads if you don't want to.

Noone twists your arms and makes you do it

and most of all, you don't need to be a total asshole to someone just because they didn't make an original thread.

Get off your high horse before you fall and hurt yourself.

Yes. Yes I do. One of the things we tell people over and over and over and over-a-god-damn-gain is to use the search button before making a topic. Can you imagine how many times this topic has been done? Cna you comprehend how many times we've had this conversation? People get pissed off because thread starters, intentionally or not, are making the forum look like something out of groundhog day.

My friend, it is vital to search before starting a new thread. If a thread on the topic already exists, post your heartfelt opinions there. This prevents clutter and is that teensy bit more professional.

As you might suspect, the threads on BESTEST VIJAMAGAME EVAR are numerous enough to be converted into a cheap fuel source. The More You Know.

I do hope you become a valuable member of the community. Welcome to the Escapist.

you've had the conversation because you've come in and initialized it.

It's still no excuse for being an asshole imo.

there you go, would have that been so hard? Hell, even copy and paste it if you really have such disdain for new people, but this thread creator doesn't seem like a troll, and we should be encouraging and welcoming to new people.

I only posted it again cos the other one was dead, hardly anyone goes in knowing specifically what they are looking for and wont go past the first 4 pages, when most people go on forums they go in and get involved in the discussions that grab there attention in the frst few pages rather than knowing specifically what they are looking for, or, spending about an hour sifting through all the other threads to find one that grabs there attention

Yeah, so back on topic...
Big Rigs hands down. What other game demands YOU'RE WINNER when you dont even start racing over the road? God bless penniless Russian developers.

unlike other forums, the escapist mods encourage thread necromancy, so if you see an old thread of a similar nature to the one you want to create, even if it's a year old, post in it. It will jump to the front page.

Then people will probably get upset because it's there, but you really can't please everyone.

I know it goes against most accepted forum etiquette, but the moderators support bumping old threads for just these cases.

but you don't know that, which is fine

Track-Mania.

Half-Life. Why? Sure it was a good game, great game even, but what HL did for the gaming community went far beyond its individual merits. The HL modding community was a huge thing in its prime and served as a melting pot for an insane quantity of ideas. So many aspects of so many HL mods went on to be echoed in mainstream development that its impossible not to draw a correlation.

Aside from its clandestine influence on game development, that vast number of mods (quite a few of which were actually good) offered an incredibly diverse assortment of gameplay for no additional cost. And frankly, the design of at least a few of them is still more solid and enjoyable than many current retail products.

Half-Life and its legacy marked, to me, a golden age in PC gaming that grows ever more dim with each over-fluffed, subpar retail release since--as gaming becomes ever more about time, money and good looks than cool ideas and genuinely fun gameplay. And though latter games still boast plenty of support for the modding community, the complexity of the associated technology bogs it down the same way it does mainstream development.

A golden age and perhaps the end of an age? All I know is, I've logged more time on my PC with Half-Life running than a good handful of other games combined. Does that make it the best? Are its individual merits enough to warrant that? Possibly, I suppose. It's hard either way to deny that Half-Life is anything less than a true legend in PC gaming.

I set this question on the myspace forums and everyone kept saying WoW

This is exactly why everybody kept noting a modern game like WoW - I'm not very convinced about the general technical skills of the vast majority of users of social networking sites. In fact, I set myself apart from nearly all of my friends by not engaging with any of the sites (and even if I did, would reject all friendship offers as an ironic statement).

Again, thread been done before, multiple times, blah, blah, blah, nothing we haven't heard before, please lock thread.

As for my own choice, I won't give you any so-called "best game ever", but I will tell you what I think is the most important game ever - 1961's Spacewar!. Not necessarily that great to play versus modern games, but then again, quantifying "best games ever" is pretty much impossible. The field is still too nascent for professional opinions (even though the computer game has been around since 1951) and individual opinions count for nil on the interwebs.

Minesweeper ;)

Anyway,

By genre (doing otherwise is comparing apples to oranges basically):

RPG: LOZ: Ocarina, Morrowind, Chrono Trigger (tie)
FPS: DOOOM (1&2), Quake Series
Space Sim: Freelancer
RTS: Battlezone II (could also be in the FPS catagory)
Racing: TrackMania Nations Forever

The best game though, has to be Battlezone II, if you dont mind the bugs, the devs left on the project (9 years later) are still working out the bugs, and creating new ones for themselves...In fact, none of the bugs (other than crappy AI) in the latest patch existed in the original game, and no bugs from teh unpatched game still linger.

But what makes it the best game (IMO), is that it is the first ever (if not only) successful combination of RTS and Action (FPS) elements. You can build a full base, fully customize a hovertank from inside the factory control panel, then build it and dogfight others. Plus, the building effects (in the later patches) are the best I've seen in ANY game.

Even if posting in the old thread will create a rift in time and space, do not start a new thread.

Besides, Escapist members are generally somewhat deeper (if slightly more elitist) than your average forum member.

Diablo 2 (Lord of Destruction)

While there might be a previous thread about this topic, or about four billion to hear some of the others tell it, I am far too lazy to sift through said number of topics to try and find the universally accepted first thread that should be resurrected. So, my two cents:

First, I will admit that I like JRPGs. Let me know when you're done with your overly dramatic display of disgust, since that seems to be the generic response to any such comment here. That out of the way I would have to say after being a gamer for some 15 years now I don't think you can really say there is a 'best game' for any genre. Each game has it's ups and its downs. But I do think there are some worth mentioning.

I could list out every single 'favorite game' I have for each genre but since I doubt most of you have the time or desire to read a novel, I'll just bring up two.

Valkyrie Profile. I cannot toot this game's horn loud enough. Though it is somewhat old, PS1 era, it did everything that you could ask from an RPG and did it well. The combat was nothing amazing but it was fairly complex, easy to use, and brought a level of depth greater than navigating menus to your "kill everything" spell/skill. The story was masterfully written and brought you closer to the characters by forcing you to witness their deaths before recruiting them and it took an interesting twist to Norse mythology. Also, Lezard Valeth, while not the main antagonist is the measuring stick against which all RPG villains stand. Smart, witty, powerful and knows how to keep his head down when the **** hits the fan.

And the second game, Odin Sphere. This game takes an unusual angle on side-scrolling action while having the depth of plot of a well-written RPG. Another game that skews Norse mythology to make it a bit more interesting (anyone noticing a trend here?), I found myself reminiscing back to games like Act Raiser and Zelda 2 in the game play style, only this time the mechanic were polished to a mirror shine. The entire game is done in sprites but they are so masterfully animated it almost feels like they're popping out of the screen. An A+ musical track tops it off as one of the best action/rpgs out there.

Super Mario 64. The game that got me into games.

I have to say ET on the atari... because that game owns...

I love the ET, is so bad!!

Mario 3
End Of :)

Perfect Dark.
