Howdy fellow Escapists, I recently had an experience that I just had to share with you which I'm sure at least a few of you will find entertaining. It concerns the inescapable fact that I am an incompetent pirate.
It all started the other day on this very forum where I saw someone post that Spore had hit the net in the form of a torrent. Thinking myself O so tech savy I went to download it. 19 hours later I unpacked the archive and tried to install Spore. I found to my disgust that I didn't have enough room when I unpacked the archive and none of the files actually contained any data. Having just deleted the archive I found I had to start all over again. Cue plan B!
I then deleted everything I could possibly delete from my harddrive and defragmented, hoping to eke out a few more gigs. I then redownloaded the torrent. 19 hours later (again) I contemplated the archive and tried to figure out how to unpack the archive into a space that could only hold the unpacked archive, or the archive, but not both at once. Cue plan C!
I attempted to put the archive onto my PSP's 4 gig flash card but somehow the archive was still too large to fit and I could not get it on. Cue plan D!
Now that I had sunk into a boiling rage and was on the cusp of a homicidal rampage I went to Best Buy and bought an External Harddrive. After getting home and waiting 3 HOURS for the archive to unpack onto my new external harddrive I finally tried to install. All seemed to be going well and the program was installed.
Then I tried to boot it up, SYNTAX ERROR IN SPOREMYAPP.EXE......... yeah, that really sucks.
Now that I had been up for 3 entire days trying to pirate this damn game and it being sunday by this point I finally broke down and just bought the damn thing online.
Alright EA, you win. I'm an incompetent pirate who can't break the law no matter how hard I try. HAPPY NOW!!!
So tell me fellow escapists, have you ever pirated a game, attempted to pirate a game, thought about pirating a game, had a friend who ever pirated a game, played a game involving pirates?
Why didn't you buy the game while you were at Best Buy?
Edit: Sorry, forgot the part where you said it happened the other day, meaning Spore wasn't released yet. Note: never download a torrent of a game not yet released. There's a chance it is legit, but I wouldn't trust it.
@KSarty-- I bought the external harddrive on Saturday, so yeah Spore wasn't out yet. And anyway it wouldn't of mattered because my computer was put together from a conglomerate of pieces taken from other computers and doens't have a DVD rom drive. I keep meaning to fix that, but now that I have my external harddrive i'm just going to do direct to drive downloads.
@meatloaf231-- I know right? Pirates can be so rude, always pillaging and burning things.
I've met six pirates over thew course of my lifetime. They were in disguise, but they weren't very good at it. The first was a man in South Dakota. He had an eyepatch, a hook for a hand, and was wearing a suit. He ALMOST fooled me. Clever devil. The next guy I met in Las Vegas. He had two peg legs and a cowboy hat. He almost got me with the hat. But them legs were just too loud. Then, I met captain hook preteding he was a cellular sales representitive. Then I met three gentlman with parrots and mackaws.
Me? I've never pirated a game. I once pirated Battle Royale the movie and I couldn't get any sound. Luckily it was subtitled.
poleboy: I think the first rule is that we do not speak of the piracy, but I'm not entirely sure...
Well i'm allowed to speak of piracy because I already admitted that I fail at piracy and bought the game. So EA can suck it, I paid for your game damnit.
Slightly off topic here but I once worked in a bar and had this old guy with the most piratey beard I've ever seen come in one day and rather stereotypically drink nothing but rum for the duration he was there. He'd even respond with things like "Arr that be right" when I talked to him. I shit you not. It was completely bizarre.

Would you say that to Will Wrights face? If not, shut the fuck up and run for your life, fool!

I went to a bar once and there was this big fat guy with a huge white beard wearing all red. He even Ho Ho Ho'd. It was weird. I bet he works as a Mall Santa.

No I like Will Wright, I hate EA. Or at least their download manager. Recognize my external harddrive DAMNIT!!

It's more of a forum guideline thing. I think it's frowned upon. Like I said, not sure though.

It was a pretty rubbishy anecdote to be fair... He worked for the Lifeboats if I remember correct.
Seriously though, I met a pirate once. He just ran off shouting and pillaging.
Before dying of scurvy.
Seems like the copy protection works fine. I hope this has been an educational experience for you. You really shouldn't be attempting piracy in the first place.

The sad thing is I was going to buy the game anyway, I just wanted to play it early, it was just so tempting. Being able to play the game 3 days earlier. Also I had been hearing some negative reviews and was worried it might not be worth getting.

Patience is a virtue. Though I do know it's hard to come upon for some.

I torrented it the day it was released, before it outed in europe. Works fine but eh...its not that GOOD
Well now that the game is released it's all over the pirated networks and there's already cracks and everything, so heck I'm thinking about doing it just to "stick it to EA!" - after all maybe I can "confirm" if you failed because you downloaded before release or the copy protection really does work.
On a related note, let me give my excuse as to why I think this copy protection is ridiculous, and is actually making me want to pirate the game, instead of buying it like I usually do.

I'll take that as a valid argument as soon as you give me a reason why the average person would need to install the game more than three times.

You really can't think of a reason? Like uninstalling and reinstalling since the first install didn't work? Windows crapping out? Virus on the computer? Putting on an external hard drive...
They are good reasons, but the chances of that happening 3 times is unlikely. Though I'm not a person to get worked up about "potential" problems, which has led me into trouble several times, so I won't say you have a misguided opinion.
hah, nice story. I remember downloading Sims Society after watching the Zero Punc video review. I got it downloaded and it was missing some file, cant quite remember what it was. I didnt want to play it that bad, so I just reinstalled COd4 and played that... More addictive than wow i'd have to say

Eh, those are just reasons I pulled out, there's tons of reasons for multiple install. A lot of people end up having to uninstall a game for free space or format their drive, or just put it on a different computer (I put Orange Box on my laptop to play at school lol), etc.
Maybe I can get Spore through EA's digital download service, if it's anything like Steam, Stardock, or D2D then I'll definitely go with that method.
I don't like to pirate games, even if I "have" to.
I'm too afraid of getting punk'd and having a virusrape my computer, or the feds cutting off my internet and slapping me with a 20,084,472.99 Lawsuit.
I don't pirate anything I can find in a store, so nothing under 3 to 5 years old. I don't count online shopping as a store, you stop being a lazy bitch and let me buy a hard copy without 6-8 weeks delivery.

Anyone else playing Spore today?
