When online play was introduced.. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2949 Joined: 20 Dec 2007 | Funny, it really is unsatisfying and dissapointing, but it's frikkin' addicting - it's like the whole time I'm playing "GOD THIS SUCKS! Especially since my hands are now biologically fused to the controller..." I tend to do that with a lot of fighting games. |
Paperboy Posts: 23 Joined: 7 Sep 2008 | EDIT: Oh, another thing for me to groan about; why don't both PS3 and XBox 360 get Yoda and Vader? There's a space for them on either consoles charecter selection screen, so why not just fill them? Is that gonna be available soon? |
Paperboy Posts: 23 Joined: 7 Sep 2008 | The game is worryingly addictive; my friend vowed never to play this game, came round mine for a day, bought it the next. I recon by the time I'm 30 I won't be able to open my finger's further the what is allowed by the confines of a pad...but, it's worth it |

Yes, Namco will charge us for characters that are already on the disk. |

I thought it was gonna be a free download, but what the hell? Yoda's already on the PS3 disc? Vader is on the 360 disk? I thought that extra empty slot was just "there for future downloads". |
Copy Clerk Posts: 73 Joined: 5 Jun 2008 | Vader was very disappointing. He was just too weak in my opinion. Online play is seriously mixed bag. When you get a good connection, its very fun and rewarding. But most of the time it's just too laggy and drains the fun out of the match. But the worst thing about it for me is the pathetic single player mode. Three modes, not counting training mode? Seriously? Soul Calibur 2's single player modes were so much fun, with time attack, team battle, and especially weapon master. I spent so many hours playing weapon master mode, it was so addicting. And what do we get now? A half-assed story mode with FIVE stages? And Tower of Lost Souls? It's just too frustrating for me to even attempt to continue past stage 22+. I realize that customization is probably the biggest draw to the game, but even that loses steam pretty quickly. Overall, I regret buying it, I wish I had rented instead. |

Boy am i glad i did. I started up a story line with Vader, finished in roughly 10 minutes. WTF? Started another one with Nightmare, finished again in roughly 10 minutes. Very disapointed |

Muckraker Posts: 277 Joined: 17 Jun 2008 | Its attempts to actually fit Darth Vader and Yoda into the game world were laughable. |
Muckraker Posts: 252 Joined: 2 Apr 2008 | I saw Soul Calibur II in the 4 for a Tenner section in my local game store. I'll be going back to buy it - I've already got III (Tale of Swords mode! Woo!), and II has some ace features too. Alas, unless God comes down from heaven and gives me the Gamecube version, I won't have Link... |

That reminds me! Surely it wouldn't have killed the designers or who ever handled the part of the cutscenes to have changed them slightly so that when the language is set to English, it looks like the charecter's are speaking it! (and any other language this game was dubbed for) |

Hopefully Namco create a brand new fighter series. |

If a series has previously been bothered to build up a storyline and then doesn't bother to sustain it, that's annoying. So me, i'm who the fuck cares |
Beat Writer Posts: 146 Joined: 4 Sep 2008 | Ok, so here's the storyline for every character "Blah blah, revenge, blah blah, soul blade/soul edge" |
Press Junketeer Posts: 373 Joined: 27 Jun 2008 | Wait, the games before it had plot lines? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1847 Joined: 13 Feb 2008 | I played a game of SC4, followed immediately by a game of SC2. SC2 was better. |

Do you want to play Soul Calibur on a GameCube? |
Beat Writer Posts: 186 Joined: 8 Sep 2008 | To me, Soul Calibur 4 was easily summed up in one word: Meh |

Realism? You can fight as a chick who is in bondage gear and has a sword that can turn into a whip, who then goes off and fights DARTH VADER. And you are fighting over a living, evil, giant eye sword. What kind of realism do you expect from anything in this kind of game? |
Paperboy Posts: 23 Joined: 7 Sep 2008 |
Ok, not quite realism...more along the lines of fitting to the fights |
Press Junketeer Posts: 373 Joined: 27 Jun 2008 |
Ok, that sounds a lot better. =) |

Quoted for truth. SC4 is a step back in the right direction. Yes it's shallow, yes it's not as fun as earlier games, but my god is it addictive! |

Now don't get me wrong, this game is graphically astounding (maybe not that good, but meh), but what are graphics without a storyline?
I remember back in the relms of time inhabited by the PS a game known as "Soul Blade" (some may know it as "Soul Edge"). This game is the begining of the "Soul" series and was one of the best games ever (in my opinion). It had an awesome stroyline, kick ass soundtrack, great charecter building and a fairly simple combat system.
What I want too know is, where along the lines did we lose these elements? The soundtrack is good for Soul Calibur 4, but doesn't really give the battles a feeling of realism. I realise as this is a game far down in the series, it wouldn't be expected to build on previous charecters, but it would have been nice to give them a reasonable background for those who don't want to have to blow the dust off of the older games to get what's going on. The same goes for storyline; this game feels like it's tieing up loose ends, which could be good, but leaves it feeling empty.
The combat system, this is where my anger lies...when did button bashing become such a bad thing that really annoying combos were put inplace? I know this makes me sound noobish, but if it's 2 in the morning, you don't really want to have to work to have fun (some may disagree).
If anyone has any ideas on how these elements could be made better, or how old one's could have been continued, or how to make me stop seeming like I don't appreciate the game, please, share them!
