The Darkness would have been amazing if it was a replayable sandbox

The last case in Phoenix Wright - Justice For All. I had all the other cases figured out about mid way through but that one took so many twists and turns I was almost crushed when it ended.

the end of episode two in Half Life two, I wont spoil it too much. But when someone semi-vital to the game dies. didnt really expect that. :(

In Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem when you get to the second floor of the mansion, go into the bathroom and have the 'check' option on the bath tub. if you do there is a quick cut scene that zooms in on you dead in the bath filled with blood. a shrill scream echoes and a flash breaks the hallucination. some of the other hallucinations during the game are quite freaky and surprising, too!

The biggest surprise in a game? Probably when you figure out about the whole "would you kindly" thing in Bioshock. I was just like "Holy tits, didn't see that coming..."

Yeah, it's a nice family story isn't it?

Resident evil 4 bosses.
Their transformations... like...wow.
my favorite part whas when you've killed the big croc thingy fish when you're like .. pfew and than the rope get's hold of your leg.
(and leon's ice cold booty blowoff, what's up with that guy?)

Call of Cthulhu: Dark corner of the earth.
the scene you have to escape from the hotel. Gawd that was some scary shit.

When you first played the remake for Resident Evil for Gamecube and you wondered what the hell all this oil was for and decide to leave it in your chest since it took up an inventory slot.

When you get to the point in System Shock 2 where you find out who Polito really is.

That is the scariest moment of gaming. Bar NONE.

Ahh for me the first time you encounter one of those bloodsuckers in STALKER (you guys all know what I'm talking about...)

I walked out and suddenly see this real "predator" shape running at me. Unloaded an entire clip and both barrels of the shotgun before I got out.

My housemate actually walked in going "WHAT'S WRONG WHAT HAPPENED" I was swearing so much.

That and the scene in FEAR where you hit the button to climb down the ladder and suddenly Alma is right there. I was like "CRAP *down down down down strafe aim* WHAT THE HELL WHERE DID SHE GO"

Awesome. Completely Awesome.

FF7:
No, not Aeris, I was kinda expecting that when I got the lvl 3 invulnerability limit break, that move was just too powerful. Plus I've already had characters die on me in FF5 and Phantasy Star 2.

No, I'm talking about the end-boss. Loosely quoting my inner speech here: "Wait, that was the end-boss already? I was just poking him a bit and still buffing up, preparing to unleash full carnage in a few rounds. And he's already dead? I knew that guy was a wimp from the moment I saw him, killing girls to make himself feel better, going all anguishy over everything. You can go stick it Sephy. You can't even grow a proper pair of wings."

The Bioshock and KOTOR reveals are the two most obvious ones in my opinion.

There was also one moment in (again) Bioshock, where you walk past this mannequin and after you reach a dead end, you turn around and that same mannequin is standing right there. It looses some of its punch putting it in words, but when it happened many expletives were shouted and shotgun blasts rang everywhere.

Finding out that the cannon outside Princess Peach's castle in Super Mario 64 does, in fact, serve a purpose. This was before myself and many of my friends had taken our first shaky steps into Internet Land, you see, so rumors were everywhere about the fabled Top of the Castle, and what might be waiting up there.

From the Key at the Bottom of the Lake, to angling your fall when you die in that all-clouds-and-red-coins stage, to jumping over the invisible wall blocking you from the Princess Peach/Bowser painting on the first floor over the castle, I'd heard all of the supposed methods... Except getting all 120 stars. Apparently, none of my friends had thought of that.

I was utterly shocked when I got that last star and stepped outside to find the cannon unlocked and ready to blast me to the top of the castle... And the prize couldn't have been greater. 99 lives, a special third jump, and a Yoshi cameo! It was amazing, at the time.

I had two quite impressive surprises in two games:

Flying Saucer:
"The Greys destroyed our world... We, the Cyners, came to help you..." turning to "The sight of a Cyner colony ship usually means the destruction of the concerned planet"

And then there was Two Worlds... Gandohar, you sneaky bastard...

lol i remember beating FF10's final boss 1hk with rikku... i was like "wait.. what? that's it?" this is what you get when you try to finish any final fantasy title in 100% D: a final battle that's not amusing or rewarding at all..

also, this:

Watching Roman get shot in the back of the head in Gta 4. Why do they always kill the funny guy?

The scene with Andrew Ryan in Bioshock is still one of the most fucked up moment I encountered in a game.

The last one I remember was in Super Mario Galaxy, with that space princesses story. "I'm searching the stars, which is somehow full of air, with a giggling star thing, to find my mother, who got lost on a comet. Oh wait, it turns out I can't find her, cause I've been lying to myself, and she's really been dead all along."

What made it suprising was how much of a tonal shift it was. As far as I know, thats the first real death mentioned in a Mario game.

I wasn't surprised by that, I'd spotted it coming. But I was shivering with insane fanboy glee. SHODAN is one of my favourite gaming villains. Ever.

What is it you fear? The trivial end of your existence? When the history of my glory is written, your species shall only be a footnote to my magnificence...

I AM SHODAN.

I agree, all of Act 4 was awesome in my opinion, with that amazing final sequence.

I also liked the conversation you have with Sovereign in Mass Effect. Just learning whats pulling Saren's strings was cool for me.

And the part in Resident Evil 4, Chapter 2-3 I believe. When you are trapped in the house with Luis. I kept a save file at the part and play it every now and then for fun. Man that was crazy the first time through. Same can be said for pretty much that whole game!

The final boss confrontation in The Witcher has been the one twist in recent games I didn't really see coming...nice one, too.
(The whole "Atlas is Fontaine" thing I saw coming two chapters ahead or so though. The Ryan "connection" was not as obvious.)
