Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 773 Joined: 7 Jan 2008 | Rock Band and Guitar Hero? Seriously? My opinion: GTA should not be put to rest, but it is enough to have one game per console generation (and maybe one or two expansion packs...REAL Ones, not Full Price Titles) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six - I like RS6 3 and RS6 Vegas, but it seems like the developers have no idea where to go with the series. Resident Evil - I'm excited about RE5, but the first gameplay footage did not impress me as much as it should. And some core elements of the game felt already arkward and old in RE4 (I only mentioned Series that i like, mentioning stuff like Final Fantasy that i just don't like would be just flaming from my side) |

I'm not that into FF, but I don't think any game series should have 13 installments. It's either the same damn game over and over or the latter installments are so different from the earlier ones that they're only thematically linked. I dunno which FF is, but yeah. I also agree with you on GTA, one per generation should be enough for the fans. |

Hear, hear! Honestly, Nintendo is doing to Mario what George Lucas is doing to the Star Wars franchise (milking its cash cow until its udders are smoldering, blackened stalactites.... I wish I could say I came up with that myself). |
Paperboy Posts: 48 Joined: 11 May 2008 | Final Fantasy 7 One of my favorite game stories ever has gotten so stretched out and beaten into sequels, it just needs to stop. The game was done when it first was released, even as much as I like the expansion on the plot, it was never needed. |
Paperboy Posts: 49 Joined: 6 Sep 2008 | i`m pro with most series, i mean it`s nice to see where the game is heading, despite the fact that it can turn into a wreck or into a masterpiece. But there are a few games which are excellent the way they are, i don`t see any point for a StarCraft 2 for example. |

I'm addicted to FFTA2, but I'd like it more if it didn't have that tired old brand stuck to it. * Halo, sadly, probably has nowhere to go from here but down. * Star Wars, again sadly, doesn't need to be axed entirely but massively scaled back. Stop making three SW games a year, just make one good one every two or three years. * I'm ok with Mario in general but MARIO PARTY! Now there is a lumbering corpse that needs to be put to rest. * Madden NFL - no, I take that back. Don't cancel it, just put a tutorial in the next edition! I know 86% of the world's population has bought a copy but the rest of us have no chance of figuring out how to play, even as dedicated gamers. That game has a learning curve like the side of Uluru. |

My head is exploding trying to understand your logic, my good man. And no I am not trolling you. As for me, as much as I hate to say it because I used to really love the series (particularly the 4th game), Dynasty Warriors needs to either be ended or sent to another company who will not systematically beat its corpse. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1540 Joined: 6 Apr 2008 | Eh. I don't particularly care, as long as they are good games. There's nothing wrong with familiarity, that is: It would be pretty weird if, every time a company wanted a new game they had to come up with a completely different set of cha...oh wait. As for GoW...the sequel hasn't even been out yet, not that I'm defending the former, I thought it was only okay. Very weak plot. Cool gunplay. Also, as for sports, race sims etc. What exactly do you expect them to do? It's not as if they can dramatically change the concept. You think something like Project Gotham Racing is going to be a wholly different game if they called it Ford Super Street Racing! ...EXTREME! Maybe, if they were going for a fantastical twist, like say P.O.D. or any number of 'Wacky' type racing games, but even then, the mechanic is almost the exact same! |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 830 Joined: 21 Feb 2008 | I'm laughing at the fact that Gears of War appears on some of these lists but the second part in its series isn't even out yet. My picks: -Mario: give the guy a rest, please. I loved the Mario games, but seeing him in everything from soccer to go cart racing is like seeing your school's valedictorian turning tricks behind the 7-11 ten years after graduation. -Legend of Zelda: maybe if they made a coherent timeline or mixed the story up a bit every once in a while it could go on, but as it stands they're just beating a dead horse....then calling it with that same fracking song. -Tomb Raider: okay, Legend wasn't a bad game. Please end it there, I don't want to see it go down in flames again. -Madden: I'm not sure what year it peaked, but I know it was a long time ago. |

There are a number of series that have been on going for far too long, but the companies in charge still manage to put out quality titles. It's easy for a bad series to die quick because it just sucks and enjoy that. It's harder when we continue to get some gems out of a series that's been beaten into the ground. |
Paperboy Posts: 15 Joined: 12 Sep 2008 | Most of them! There're far too many sequels in gaming. I miss the good old days of studios such as Bullfrog when there was so much more creativity going around... what happened? I suppose gaming just became bigger and the ever souless EA churns out mediocre game after mediocre game. Some sequels I'm still hyped for. Blizzard are pretty unoriginal if you think about it (compare Starcraft to Warhammer 40k, for instance), but their games are always good. So for the gameplay alone, they're worth it. I'm also excited about Fallout 3. But as for most sequels... WHY? I mean gaming sequels aren't as bad as movie sequels usually are, but why must we replay the same damn games over and over with (usuaully) just better graphics? Not all sequels are bad, but it seems like developers simply hate coming out with new IPs. MAKE IT STOP!! And as for GTA... it was fun... but come on people - it's essentially been the same game for 12 years now, just with added gimmicks and all. It's fun, but if you've played one, you've played them all. |

In the end a game company's purpose is to produce a product and to make money. Employees enjoy things like having houses and feeding their families, funny how that works out. So I can see why they rehash the same idea over and over. If we keep buying it then why should they stop. So ultimately it's on us to stop shelling out money for the same ideas. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1290 Joined: 4 May 2008 | I think a series like PGR or Burnout are good, because they can actually improve and not get overly annoying. They'll get better at what they do, and in the case of PGR, the bigger reknown of the game will allow more willing cars and circuits to liscense themselves to it. And whats with the call to end potential Bioshoc, Gears of War and Killzone series? They haven't even had a sequel yet and you want them gone? Ok if you didn't like the first one of the game, but give them a chance. Mario should really stop. Stick to platformers and possibly the paper mario series, but stop everything else. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 10 Joined: 12 Sep 2008 | To be fair though, the reason they continue on with all these franchises is because fans demand it. Fans love it. I mean, it's incredibly difficult to imagine a Nintendo console without a Mario game. As much as I'd like to see all these series just put to an end, what would happen if they did end? Except Halo and WoW. Those games can die. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 102 Joined: 22 Jul 2008 | Any World or European cup football games, The yearly Fifa's are enough. Anything else I'm not too bothered about. As long as the games made are entertaining I don't mind. I'm surprised by the mention of Gta, the last game may have been a slight let down, but I'm sure rockstar can improve it with a sequel and hopefully bring back the fun of Vice city and San Andreas. Also, if the developers of Condemned want to continue with the stupid cult/special powers angle that they had at the end of Condemned 2, then that can end as well. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2049 Joined: 7 Sep 2008 | Remember that each FF game had a different story, world, characters. Though they had recurring themes (character named Cid, chocobos and moogles, etc), each could have been an original IP. IMO Final Fantasy is less a game series but more a brand nowadays. @topic: I actually thought that the Silent Hill series would end in a game that explained everything. Maybe going back in time to dive into the town's history then work your way to the future, seeing the death and decay that would eventually eat the town up. |

OK, Guitar Hero, sure maybe some could want that to end. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1065 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 | The numbered Final Fantasy games ARE NOT sequels can I add. There are only a small handful that are actually direct follow ups. If Square stopped calling their traditional RPGs Final Fantasy, the fans would just nickname them as Final Fantasy games anyway (imo). The FF7 series SHOULD be taken out back and finally put out of it's misery as well as the GTA series. As someone else stated, once you've played, finished and killed everyone once, you've practically done the same in all the games. Lastly, colour matching games (Guitar Hero / Rock Band) shouldn't have started really. Okay, I'm a little harsh there. They can be fun at parties and from time to time but it's nothing like playing an actual guitar and if it was (like the drumming obviously is 'life-like'), I think people should just go and learn how to play the actual instrument. They obviously have a liking of music and want to follow up on that so why not? Before I get flamed I'll just say that I don't think they should STOP making GH/RB style games.................I'm just not looking forward to the future when we'll all be encouraged to do nothing in real life and instead go buy a game and a special controller and pretend to do the activity. |

Beat Writer Posts: 221 Joined: 5 Mar 2008 | nobodys debating that Final Fantasy games are sequels of one anouther as its pretty obvious that they are not, just the fact that they're getting worse in the line of the "Final Fantasy" game series compared to some of the JRPGS coming out today. |

What series do you NOT want to see another addition to, that they should just axe?
I say the Metroid Series should be put to rest. I love the Metroid series, Metroid Prime is my favourite non-multiplayer game ever, and I just don't want it to go down the same route as Mario and Pokemon. I'd like to see a Metroid 5, with Samus (in her Fusion suit of course, no retcons here) dealing with the issues raised by the Federation's raising Metroids. I'd really like to see the series axed now, but Fusion is too open-ended to just leave it now, I think. So one more, to wrap up the whole series, and let her go out with a bang. I don't want it to deteriorate beyond recognition.
What series do you think deserves similar treatment? Which one should they just wrap up as soon as possible, or just plain stop making new installments? This isn't about series you hate and don't want to see more of; this is about series you like and don't want them to deteriorate.
