(My apologies is this thread has been done before, but forum search seems to, literally, come up empty)

I think we've all been there before, we're playing this new game, everything seems awesome, then something happens (or doesn't happen when it should), and you get that " :/ pity..." feeling... Like the game could have been better if only that thing hadn't been overlooked.

To me this happens, for instances, in Hitman 4: Blood Money.

The game features 12 awesome levels (not counting the tutorial) which you can do in a variety of ways ranging from "Mass Murderer" killing everyone in sight, or go for the coveted "Silent Assassin" rating, and any other way in-between. The possibilities are almost endless.

Now, one of the things I love in any game with guns, is sniping. I'm usually the sniper, I love sniping, "I wanna be a sniper rifle when I grow up", etc, etc, etc... Which makes me a bit sad that, if you're going for the Silent Assassin/Hitman rating, you pretty much only get to use the sniper in 2 missions, both close to the end... In every other mission it's generally faster, easier and cleaner to ditch the sniper entirely, not to mention you don't have to log the sniper case around the whole level... It's just a bit sad that for a game that boasts, and in almost every other case delivers, the ability to use just about any method to complete the game, that there are only 2 levels out of 12 where using the sniper is justifiable, and not a contrived excuse to justify to yourself why you spent half of all your money earned in that ultra silencer, recoil suppressor, ultimate scope...etc.

The other thing you may have heard me complain about if you read my Crysis:Warhead review, is that for a game engine of that quality, they could have done better in making the game non-linear IMO. The game is still good, but it feels like it could have been so much better.

Not similar enough. That thread is about weak entries in game series, this is about bad features in good games.

In Final Fantasy 7, the quality of gameplay is like a rollercoaster. One second I'm on the edge of my seat in excitement going "Holy shit, this game kicks so much ass", and the next second I'm like "Oh god... what the hell were they thinking?". The combat is great with a wide selection of spells and abilities for you to choose from, but setting up the materia for each of your character before a battle is just tedious. It takes ten to fifteen minutes to organize all the spells for all the characters so they complement each other and allows for the right materia to level faster. And unlike FF8, you can't instantly transfer abilities from one character to another when you switch. You have to remove all materia from your character, make the switch and equip the materia on the new character, and depending on what armor and weapons they have, you might fit more or less materia.

It's been a long time since I played the game, but I know there are more examples. Like the limited save on the last CD, what the hell was that about.

Nice, I only knew a few of those, like the Blue shells in Mario Kart, the socializing in GTAIV and the Sailing in windwaker.

The needler in Halo 3. Especially when you get killed by it in a bullshit move and you hear a little girl or fella scream "OH MY GOD, DID YOU SEE HOW I KILLED HIM? I'M SO GOOD AT THIS. THIS GUY SUCKS!" I have had that experience before.

the godfather game would of been absolutely 'mazing if it had been so bloody repetative. every shop, every warehouse, every depot was exactly the same. how much effort would it of taken to knock out maybe 20 more types? and perhaps the enemy layout different once in a while?

The platforming in Force Unleashed. It was a good game, but the developers put NO time into smoothing-out the platforming mechanics, which is annoying because they put quite a few hidden items in areas that required fairly precise jumps (most annoying one is when he randomly decides that he doesn't want to double-jump). Note to developers: If you're going to put jumping puzzles in your game, smooth-out the platforming-related mechanics.

The Space Era in Spore. Call me crazy, but all the little creature building 'minigame' parts were addictive fun to me... but then the mass micromanaging ridiculousness of Space Era killed it for me. I mean, it's awesome to colonize and terraform planets... but not so much when SUDDENLY on the other side of the Galaxy an Ecosystem Collapse is happening, interrupting your fun. That and the whole WARZ AR BADZ PEACE IS DUH ANSWER message of the thing. I nuke one little planet and I'm a monster that no one wants to ally with, but when all my colonies are being razed by a gigantic alien armada it's just the enemy's way.

Pfft.

that top seven missed quite a bit of things:

-Pixel hunting.
Who here remembers all of that stupid crap? it's completely unnecessary, where's that damn thing? oh it's just one pixel?! AAAAAH! And how do I find it in all this?! It became so infamous even SIERRA made fun of it in Space Quest VI.

-Illogical puzzles
Who remembers in Return to Zork you were supposed to FEED a duck a scroll to get it to lay an egg? And who remembers the thing in Gabriel Knight 3? Or that part with the item that doesn't even look like it'd help hold something down in The Dig? Or the part in King's Quest VII where you had to get everything JUST RIGHT in that sorceress's house else you die? Yeah how were we supposed to figure that out without looking at a strategy guide?

-Dark Seed 2's mirror puzzle.
No description necessary.

now i dont care if there are threads thats are the same then that i wont even jump on that but i need to agree with you on this one. Many games do this actualy, thegame is generaly fun or amazing until just this one msall thing or reacurring thing keeps on stopping you from completely getting loss in it all. For me was with dynasty warrior 5, even though i can give many more example. The game was good, the story lines were awsome, good animation and characters they are getting closer and closer to perfection and then the thing i loved the most dissapeared. The multiplayier vs. in it. It pissed me off i cant kick the crap out of my friends with da quiao, while they wrre lu bu. Another quick one i guess, was the newest samurai warriors when they abondoned character creation, i hated that too, it really sucked.

Agreed... Dunno how I forgot that one. It's like they decided to end the game, but didn't really think of an ending before that.

i thought that in game advertising wasent all that bad to be honest, there was almost a sense of satire when you were sneeking around that warehouse in mgs2 and it took you a good five minutes to realise they said Z.O.E-nice

s.t.a.l.k.e.r. You all settled in for this long haul, story intensive RPG shooter then it turns out that you don't get the final bit of badass armour until you're in the final level 5 minutes from the end of the game.

I agree. I wouldn't mind in-game ads if they actually made the game cheaper, but they don't. It's like cable or sattelite TV, you are paying a subscription but you still have to sit through as many if not more commercials than you do if you watch the "free" networks with rabbit ears. Some say the in-game ads make the games more realistic. I say that's nonsense. I prefer cleverly written fake ads in games any day. There have been some pretty funny parodies of real companies in games back before ads for real products became popular in games. Some of the ads in Deus Ex for example are pretty funny.

You mean in-game ads like, Gizmodo, or a normal game, but instead of having a banner in that building for "Mike" having one with the actual symbol and name like "Nike"?

Quick Time Events - They were sort of fun in RE4, and I don't mind the ones in God of War, but lately they're just overused and annoying.

Being required to drink water to stay alive (AKA, gradually deteriorating health) - Dark Cloud is the only example I can think of for this, and that was an awful idea.

Deterioration of weapons and armor - Dark Cloud did this too, another bad idea.

The boss characters in any SNK game. Ever. You do feel so awesome when you beat it though.#
The main characters from Final Fantasy games (except Squall and maybe Yuna if I'm feeling nice).
Raining Blood in Guitar Hero III. It's not even a good song, what's the point in it other than to piss people off?

That wasn't so bad. There were plenty of waterfalls and such like, you just have to map out your journeys and think about what you're doing.

Yeah, it wasn't like it made the game harder. I just don't like knowing that I have to go do it every twenty minutes or so. If it just replenished health, but your health didn't gradually fall, I wouldn't mind it as much.

Nintedo's complete failure at designing online play.

Seriously, anyone who's played Brawl knows what I'm talking about. Brawl is my favorite multiplayer game to date (BTW, I'm not even going to mention tripping here. We all hate it, we all agree on it, end of discussion.), but online matches are stuck on timed, 4-player fights, which to me is the worst way to play the game. I've never even been able to play a match without game-ruining lag. I hear they've somewhat fixed it, but I don't care as I don't even want to play a timed match anyway.

I'm sure everyone already knows how much this sucks, but I have to mention it here because this actually kept me from buying a Wii. My Fiancee already has a Wii, so I can just play the single-player games I like at her place. My friends all have Brawl already, so the only reason for me to get a Wii would have been to play Brawl whenever I want.

Mario Kart is much better, but again, you can't pick what mode you want to play in. I was really excited about the strategic setting, since it allows you to have a more legitimate test of skill rather than the usual craziness. It's still fun to play as it is, but I would have been able to take the game a little more seriously if it could be played with strategic items only and it would be another reason to get a Wii.

I know it's a little strange to be pissed about Nintendo sucking at multiplayer when the other systems and PCs have a far greater selection of games anyway. The thing is, I'm completely bored of the FPS genre (I hear Shadowrun at least made an attempt to be more interesting than most, so I may give that a try) and I'm terrible at RTS games (though I still play WC3 for the custom games), and I absolutely refuse to play MMOs. Since these genres make up 99% of the online multiplayer games available, I think it's understandable that I was looking forward to Brawl as one of the few online games I could really enjoy, and that I was quite disappointed at how hard they failed at it.

Too Human wasn't a good game in my book, but to each his own.

The camera in Ninja Gaiden 2 killed me more times than the other ninjas, though.
