I hope this hasn't been posted before :P

What was the first online game you ever played? How old were you? What were your first impressions? Did it have an effect on what your favourite genre of games is, or what your favourite games are now anyway?

I'm just curious :)

The first online game I ever played was Counter - Strike 1.5 and I was 13 or 14 I think. This was also the first time I ever used a pc so I had not played half life or anything like that, really this was the first FPS I ever played also. It was on my brother-in-law's PC, he pretty much introduced me to the internet :P I was truely terrible at that game and didn't get good at first person shooters until a few months after CS:S's release. My first impression was literally WOW. I was hooked the moment I started playing, it was so new to me and was so exciting. My favourite genre of games are online FPS's and they have been since I first touched the mouse. I don't think it will ever change :)

Star Wars Battlefront.
On the Map Kamino. As clones.

I lost.

Technically? The first 'Descent', over modem with my buddy. Ahh, the days of 'Waiting for Call' while yelling at my parents 'DON'T ANSWER IT! I'M GONNA PLAY A GAME!' Ahh...good times.

But actually online, over the internet online? Quake 2 deathmatches. Sweet sweet deathmatches. On dial up! Woo! 3 cheers for lag-leading the rocket launcher!

That would probably be Diablo 2 open battlenet for me. So funny.

Original Half-life I think. I don't think I played Quake or Doom II outside local networks. It was lots of fun but man, I sucked at FPS back then. I've never been big on online multiplayer, but TF2 really got me back into it.

I was 17. Ele/Necro, named Vladimir Pyrobokor, on the original Guild Wars campaign.

Yeah, that's right. It was less than 2 years ago.

Oh well.

Technically, it was Resistance: Fall of Man. What? I came out of the PS2 era, few games ever even had online play and I didn't game on PC much at the time.

Socom II: US navy seals, always liked being marines with the M4A1 SD :)

Wow pretty recent :) I played the original guild war's for a while but quickly got bored cos there was noone to shoot XD It is an excellent game though for people who hate subscriptions.. like me :)

Age of Empires. Crap, it's lagging! Hit pause a dozen times, that'll fix it!

Jedi Knight came shortly thereafter.

Oh! I totally forgot about Jedi Knight! AND Age of Empires! Ahh...spamming 'Gold please' never got old. Oh wait...yes it did. Very quickly.

Counting out those hilariously disgusting browser games, I think it'd actually be gears of war.
I remember the first game was warzone on mansion, where everyone piled to the stop stairways and started downing each other frantically with lancers. It just stuck out for me, how it felt like I was actually playing the campaign but with... real people!

It was still a couple of weeks before I spoke to anyone, though. I'm such a beautiful coward.

Probably Unreal Tournament though it may have been Team Fortress Classic...I don't remember.

Though if you want to get technical it's Red Alert over modem.

Well, I'm assuming you are discounting BBS doors and MUDs and such. Sticking to commercially available titles that require at least modem-to-modem connections, my first online game would have to have been Doom II. I was 21.

Runescape

GEEEEEEZER! Nah I'm kidding. Seriously, when was the last time you hear anyone talk about BBS? Much less even know what it is? Man that's a thread all it's own.

And Doom 2? Classic. I used to do Doom 1 over LAN.

Age of Empires 2, closely followed by Team Fortress Classic back in 1999.

Been playing online in some form ever since.

I watched my buds play Doom I. I was busy finishing Ultima Underworld and trying to bed the waitress in Legend of the Red Dragon.

halo 3

Halo 2 it was, I still remember the magical day I got Xbox Live as if it was yesterday.

Halo 2 Rumble Pit on Warlock slayer If I remember correctly I won.

Starcraft.

I went into a 3v3 map in the Top vs Bottom section and picked zerg. While I was still barely making my base I was steamrolled by a group of siege tanks and goliaths. I had maybe 6 zerglings and 2 hydralisks.

my first online game was unreal tournament for xbox it still holds soem fun lil memories for me and my lil bro coz it was also the first time i ever completly kicked ass at a game.

pitty the sequal was so crappy with all the mortal kombat stuff and the refocus onto melee over shooting stuff though :(

Rubies of eventide

owh dear god why

it had the same graphics 4 years ago

Diablo 2! I still break out that game every once in a while.

I lanned Dark Omen with my friend when we were really young and it was groundbreaking to have more than 1 PC in the house, other than that I played Unreal Tournament quite a lot I think I only ever did facing worlds though.

Mechwarrior 3
Great times running around with a suicide Firefly loaded with nothing but machine guns and the biggest engine I could cram in there. :D

Quake 2, God I loved the mods for that game.

The original Command and Conquer. Ah, good times.

First game I played online was Diablo II on Battle.net. Good times.. Had to ask every time I wanted to play, and I didn't have my own computer either. That part was quite annoying, because it was my brother's game and we shared the computer, though in practicality, he owned it apparently. But sometimes he was nice to me and let me play Diablo II :)

I think it's either between gears or COD3 since I had them at the same time when I bought my 360. I know I sucked incredibly badly either way, I've only just recently started getting better.

(I know it sounds really really lame, but my first online game I played was...*sigh* warrock open beta, I played with 3 friends I introduced them to online gameplay ^^...like 5 years ago maybe

er...I want to say Warcraft III, but i soppose Internet Checkers was first.

Quake II. It was awesome as multiplayer. The first MMO I tried was Ultima Online and it was just unplayable. I just hated it... resisted MMOs till WoW, which thankfully I quit about six months ago...

Age of Empires 2 truly magnificent except for those incredibly op Teuton.
