Most video game movies are picked up by no-talent directors to make a quick buck because they are popular games. Few, if any, video game movies have had any effort put into them to try and make a good movie. They are just fan service that will only appeal to people who have played the game...And even then, most fans will find the movie terrible because no effort was put into it. Look at Doom. Fun game series, but I'd be willing to bet that even most Doom fans didn't like it because there was just no effort put into that movie. If a competent director who actually cared about making a good movie picked up the license to a game then it could be good. You don't need to take a really cinematic game like MGS to make a good movie; you just need a team that doesn't suck to work on it. But until that happens I will continue to assume all video game movies will suck until one comes along and proves itself to not be shit. |

If they also took som e liberties with the SPOILER SPOILER terrible endings of his daughter dieing and SPOILER SPOILER his daughter hating him END SPOILER i would be ok with that. Realy is a shame the game sucked cause the story had me hooked. |

Once videogame movies start being taken on by real good directors and taken seriously, like what has started to happen with The Dark Knight and, hoefully, Watchmen, with comic book movies, that is when we start getting good videogame movies. But there is a huge problem I have with videogame movies. Unless the movie has you on the edge of your seat, it just feels like a step backwards, as its just the same thing without you controlling it. |

Err.. then what's the point of making a movie of it? |

so should we just show the games on a projector at the movies? |
Paperboy Posts: 39 Joined: 30 Sep 2008 | the only two posible games that could be good(but unlikely)are halo and half life, and thats if bungie writes the story for the halo movie, and quentin tarantino makes the half life movie(his is a know fan of half life(sorry,no link)).like i said, not very likely |

Having said that I am tired of Cliff Blezinski. Gears of War is overrated and so will that movie be. |

Your living in the past. Origanal ideas are so 90s. The 21st century is all about riping people off. They might as well do it well |

Paperboy Posts: 22 Joined: 16 Sep 2008 | Hitman is a movie and I am OFFENDED that it shouldn't have been made. However I like how people subject ideas for video game-movies when the video game is basically a movie already. I feel many times I am just along for the ride. HL2 is a great example of this integration (clear up to the lack of cutscenes that I cannot skip). KotOR would make a great film. One need not worry about the choices (the "light" side is canonical) with exception of the minute details. The Unholy War would rock my world if it was made into a movie. That was a great game that I want more story for. |

I agree. The Halo games have had a terrible story. Master Chief is a useless hero for a movie as there is no characterization to develop empathy for. Halo 2 was by far the worst game, yet The Arbiter's story arc is workable and the costs of the movie could be spread over a trilogy, so the first film might end with the discovery of the Halo (but not the exploration of it), the second film would end with the punishment of the Gold Elite for his failure and his becoming the Arbiter, the third film would show him swapping sides with the final shot being him first meeting Master Chief. Fade Out. This would effectively put most of Halo 3's plot outside the trilogy, but then... why film it again? |
Beat Writer Posts: 127 Joined: 29 Aug 2008 | The only one that could probably work out of those would be Bioshock, although they'd have to be making one elaborate set faithful to Rapture City (which could prove to be quite difficult) as well as costumes faithful to the splicers and big daddies, and enough little girl identical twins (Although I do bet that if they were making a movie of Bioshock that they could use different girls, that would actually seem more realistic) to look like them. But they coudl also use CG-I, and that could also work just as well. Another problem would simply be the ending...does he kill all the girls or save all the little girls? And you'd just have to get someone who looks pretty - he doesn't talk. :P |

YES. THANK. YOU. I'm so frigging sick of sequels and prequels and remakes and all this bullshitty creativity sidestepping they're doing in the mainstream movie industry. |

I actually like that idea, interestingly enough. That way you don't have to have all those camera's wooshing and wobling everywhere to get a close up view of Snake sliting a soldier's throat. |

PROBATION Posts: 1009 Joined: 13 Aug 2008 | Explanation of the problems of a SotC movie copypasta'd from another forum with the same topic: I will admit that the lack of dialog would cause a problem, but look at the success of Wall-e, a movie in which neither the titular character nor the main love interest can say more than one or two words. CG may cause problems in box-office acceptance, but Advent Children was all CG and that was okay. It's the overall story and epic scale that would make for a great movie, at least cinematographically (wow that's a bigger word than I ever expected to use) speaking. The wide shots of the scenery during the treks to the colossi and the introduction of each would be awestriking. They could add voice-overs from Dormin during the treks, but I will cede the point that it would be hard-pressed to gain a following outside of certain groups. I also think that Assassin's Creed would make a good movie, along with Mass Effect and Too Human. User was put on probation for: All your base are belong to us. (1 days) |

Seriously, I don't need to tell you that basically every movie based on a video game just plain "sucks ass". I think the real problem with those movies is that they have very little to do with the actual games they are supposed to be based off of.
There have been plenty of shitty video game movies in the past, but with games today, there are more than enough opportunities to pick up a good franchise and make a good movie off of them. Games have been getting more and more cinematic as the years go by. I'm here to give you my list of what games would actually make good movies, if directors spent the time with them.
Video Game Movies That Wouldn't Suck
[1] Kane and Lynch: Dead Men
Kane and Lynch, as a game, has gotten mixed reviews and even has gotten someone fired (gamespot) because of their review. The game has a fantastic story and some fantastic characters with some mediocre gameplay that you probably won't wanna experience more than once. As I played the game I wondered why this was made into a game and not into a movie in the first place.
Actually, they are making a Kane and Lynch movie that is supposed to star Bruce Willis as Kane. I haven't heard anything else about the movie other than who they might be casting as Lynch (they are hinting at Billy Bob Thorton).
[2] Metal Gear Solid
This is a no brainer. I honestly don't see why anyone hasn't already made a Metal Gear Solid movie. All the games are cinematic as hell with cutscenes that can stretch well over an hour. The characters have become memorable enough that people can recognize them simply by the voice actor who plays them. David Hayter has become an icon in the video gaame world just for his role as Solid Snake. There is enough story to make an entire trilogy of movies, and that isn't even counting the stuff they didn't actually put into the games.
Actually, David Hayter pitched a movie idea for Metal Gear to konami but it got shot down. I guess Konami just wanted to do something different than what Hayter was pitching. Knowing that Hayter was the screen writer for the Xmen movies, I couldn't see why he couldn't help make an awesome Metal Gear Solid movie.
[3] No More Heroes
No More Heroes is a crazy game with an insane story. Travis Touchdown is the main character of this story. He buys a beam sword off the internet and decides he is going to become a master assassin.
There are plenty of twists, turns, colorful characters, and some stylized graphics to make things nice to look at and maybe if they translated that to the big screen then people would finally appreciate this underrated gem of a game for the WII.
[4] Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Out of all the star wars things to come out after the main trilogy, The Force Unleased has been better, storywise, than the prequels and most of the games to come out (minus Super star wars series on the SNES). The Force Unleashed reminds me of Kane and Lynch in that while playing it I wondered why this was made into a game and not a movie in the first place. TFU has a great story and some awesome characters while having mediocre gameplay that will bore you to tears.
All that makes me wonder why they needed to make The Clone Wars for the silver screen and not The Force Unleashed?
