Infamous Scribbler Posts: 530 Joined: 2 Aug 2008 | ... Aren't there enough of those "that game is megawesome, anyone else buying it?" threads? Yeah, I like it. I want it. It is disturbing. I'll buy it. |

Yeah, the horror-ific thing with Condemned was that you were just an Average Joe, and had just pipes for fighting. This is a shoot 'em up, but there still might be jump-out-of-your-seat moments. |

You're probably right but when i saw the "twinkle, twinkle, little star" trailer on youtube i thought |

Wait, wait, wait, wait. You people think that trailer was spooky and disturbing because the background song was a children's song? Wait, you guys are probably right. That's what I told them, big guns + horror = big magazines saying "this game is freakin' creep-astic!" while it really isn't. I mean, look at the videos. I mean, do really in the future miners get weapons/tools that can cut off limbs of organic objects? Wooh, mining, here I come! |

Would play if had the hardware. "I mean, do really in the future miners get weapons/tools that can cut off limbs of organic objects?" Industrial accidents! Heh, and i'm pretty sure everything in an arborist's toolkit at least is INTENDED for 'organic limbs' XD |

Hot damn, I remember Creature Shock, must see if I can wrangle up a copy for sake of nostalgia before I get Dead Space. Dead Space looks like a high tech sci-fi version of RE4's take on survival horror imho. |

I am hoping this has more of the horror aspect than RE4, because that was total shooter. I've been watching all the developers comentary and it looks like they really tried to create a creepy atmosphere. All of the reviews I have seen are really good, so fingers crossed. |

condemned wasnt horror its wasnt even remotly scary User was banned for: does anyone know why. (Permanent) |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 646 Joined: 6 Feb 2008 | Well the animated comic was awsome & anime film looks pretty good itself; but the game just looks distictly average (kewl zero-g physics aside). Might be one of few occasions where the film of the game is better than the game :-D |

Maybe because it's a shooter and not a survival horror game? ;o Ign reviewed it but DON'T TRUST THEM! THEY'RE EVVIKLLALAAFDSJJGA....*gets taken away by IGN suits* |
Muckraker Posts: 245 Joined: 21 Nov 2007 | None of the youtube stuff makes it look scary... Hell, Resident Evil has never been scary on it's own I just have a thing about zombies and that is the only thing that gets my blood up. If you replaced zombies with aliens then Resident Evil would lose every single bit of scare factor for me. In fact, that is a pretty good way of assessing a game's scare factor, replace the main enemies with something less inherently scary and then tell me if it's still frightening. If I were being chased by dinosaurs in Condemned I would probably still jump because it isn't the weird drugged up hobos that are scary it's that you are in a dark building, have no idea where the enemies are coming from, and don't feel particularly safe since you lack a minigun. |

That's what i've been saying for a while now. That's why i loved condemned, the melee combat was visceral... |
Beat Writer Posts: 140 Joined: 13 Aug 2008 | This game to me reaks of that old Xbox classic game called The Thing, only set in space and a bit more flashy. I couldn't really stand that game, admittedly i had a real issue with gore and horror back in them days and a binge of Dead rising fixed that, made the whole thing laughable to me, but really i don't know if i could handle "More of the same... IN SPACE!" |

That's because one of the major inspirations for the game is John Carpinter's movie The Thing, upon which the game is is based. Personally non of the trailers I've seen make it look much lke a shooter more than a horror game though but I haven't seen them all. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2034 Joined: 16 May 2008 | the basic gameplay elements of a traditional survival horror game is high ammo conservation (going apeshit with a pistol in Resident Evil is a good way to fail hardcore), draconian inventory management, and death in 2-3 hits with very little in the way of armor or free healing If a game has you constantly worrying where you next bullet is coming from, or it expects you to squeeze non-stacking healing items with questline items and perhaps weapons in 8 inventory spaces, and that zombie just haxed his way onto your neck and killed you in 2 seconds from full health, you're playing a survival horror game. Otherwise, it's a shooter, either FPS or TPS. In this case, I'm thinking it's a TPS.. not necisarily a bad thing, and it's ok for a TPS or FPS to be scary, and often they need to be. But if it doesn't include those 3 indicators, calling it survival horror is just wrong. |
King of the Yetis Posts: 1958 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | From another topic about dead space. Great game. Controls well, good atmosphere. It's learned lessons from bioshock and system shock 2 and puts them to good use. The messages scrawled on the walls (which you can decipher if you learn the alien/mutant/thingie alphabet) are great. The environments are a little dingy though and if you don't like sci fi this game isn't going to change your mind. It makes a few obvious but at least interesting observations on religion. In particular it sends up a certain belief system starting with s and rhyming with 'ientology' If you're one of those people who likes their survival horror with responsive controls and a useful camera it's a good choice but as good as the atmosphere is, the fact you can shred aliens left right and centre with mining equipment means the game isn't psychologically scary and quite often resorts to-BALARAGH!!!!!- shock tactics. Worth a 9 in my book. End of topic. Edit: Comparisons with system shock 2 are very very fair. The game takes a lot from that particular masterpiece and certainly doesn't suffer for it. It doesn't however have a strong antagonist, or at least not so far. SUPEREDIT: I give it two regular thumbs and one horrible mutant thumb up. SUPEREDITMEGATURBOEDITION!: Stomping on shit is amazingly good fun. You'll find yourself stomping on everything. Aliens. Dead Aliens. Humans. Dead humans. Items. Doors. Planets etc |

Exactly, because your CHARACTER isn't surviving- YOU ARE! See, the aim is not to -win- at the game, it's to not let the -game- win. Once you've tricked yourself into believing bad gameplay is good it all comes together, you'll see. |
