I think we can all agree that Nintendo kicked all the hardcore gamers in the groin in their E3 showcase.

That they did. And what happened to this "We only show good stuff at real conventions" and yet the biggest thing of the year was still them ripping off the PSP?

To parrot most of the thread, Spore and The Force Unleashed were awesome prospects that turned out to be pretty mediocre.

Fallout 3
I've been waiting for a Fallout 3 for 9 years just to have Bethesda fuck it up. Won't be a fallout game, but it is oblivion with guns.

I sadly agree.
I'm still going to buy a collectors edition when it comes out though.

Spore. Every video I had seen up to launch made it look like the game I wanted to make/play since I saw SimEarth. What I got was 3/5 tutorial and 2/5 unfinished Securom infested garbage. If they hadn't considered the first 4 areas of the game as tutorial, tribal and civ stages might not suck as much. I should have started to worry the second that was mentioned.

The creature creator was better than the game for Sims sake. At least multiple parts had an effect leading to more creative creatures. All of my game creatures have 1 of each part. Be it a feather, a foot, or whatever. If they had just adjusted the DNA income, they wouldn't have had over-powered creatures, and if they introduced creatures based on attack/social skill, it wouldn't cause a problem with over-powered creatures anyways.

On the bright side, looks like the game I always wanted to make/play is still available. Now to just get the skills, experience, funding, dev team, actual design, and... everything else really.

Far Cry 2 and Spore so awesome when you heard about them talk, watched videos. And so crappy when you play them. They should have done a video where you pick up a mission then drive for 15mins till you reach the target.

Year's not over. I'm wary of November 19th but so far it's been how the credit crunch has affect my gaming budget. That or GTA 4

My major disappointment for the year?

Discovering that the internet and forums I once looked to for advice was no longer a pure source of well-written, unbiased, grammatically-correct reviews. Knowing that I can no longer trust the word of the masses to aid me in my need to know whether I should buy something or not, to find out how a game really is.

Because of this change in trends, I very nearly missed out on playing a few fantastic games that were otherwise spat on and degraded is terrible - these games include Assassin's Creed and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Yeah, that's right. I LIKED them, but nearly didn't get them when I read so many reviews telling me they were bad. Sure, the game play in AC is repetitive and the plot is just weird, but the game is innovative and is a whole lot of fun. I can't wait to see what they do next.

And SW:FU is a bit buggy (though I noted only two small issues on the PS3 version) and might be a bit short and linear (but not to degradation), and all the Star Wars fanboys might be a bit butthurt because it doesn't fit into their sweaty, grand visions and dreams for what they want out of the 'Verse, but it was a lot of fun and technically brilliant.

And do you know why I think people are suddenly getting butthurt over all the new releases these days? Because they're spoilt. They've played open world games like your GTAs and such, and now think it's 'bad' to have a closed-world, linear game. Or becuase they get so wrapped up in what they think the game will be like, make assumptions and put this new game on a pedestal of chased silver and the purest shimmering samite, and before you know it - the game that they assumed would be one way is still brilliant, or good, or just solid and fun, but because it didn't meet their lofty expectations, suddenly it's 'shit.'

EDIT: Oh, and to add - I liked Spore too. I'll agree that it seemed like several different games all stuck together, but it was FUN, damnit.

Still no announcement of Half Life 2 Episode 3. I know it's only been a year, but I NEED it.

Wii Music. They really could have made it something fantastic, but it looks to be subpar at best.

Too Human. I was very excited for it, and it let me down. Also, how the ps3 is only coming out with 1 decent game per quarter it seems. Just let the behemoth die.

Actually, I count 7 good exclusive games this quarter , 10 if you count Downloadable games.
What on earth were you counting?

I count little big planet.

Nintendo in general, and the fact that quite a lot of the features they promised to put in Spore will be in expensive expansion packs... (don't get me wrong, I love the game, it's just a bit shallow, and needs pvp).

The Push back of Fallout 3, although it is close now, yay.
Spore looked good, but its not
And the fact that Rock Band 2 looks to do the same thing 1 did and that is release 1 year after the USA get it
Also, i know it was last year but god dam it took way to long to release Smash Bros Brawl, now that it came out in Aust in March, I am still playing it, i played it yesterday

Infinite Undiscovery was my biggest dissapointment of the year. Generally Square RPGs are at least tolerable and ive enjoyed the majority of them. This thing was so abysmal I couldn't even think of finishing it after the first 10 hours.

Condemned 2 comes at a very close second.

Prototype's delay would be 3rd.

Nintendo at E3. also i just looked at the banjo kazooie ad and on the site it said it was going to be an Xbox exclusive?? what the crap guys?!

What do you mean? Microsoft owns Rare now.

& see if they've done any real good with the company (I do like how the new Banjo & Kazooie looks, but Where's a true goldeneye remake)

We don't need a Goldeneye remake. It was a fun game then(despite it's number of bugs), games like it should stay in our memories where we think it is still fun.

I cannot believe I'm the only one who still remembers this....Activision dropping Brutal Legend and Ghostbusters, among others, and then to top it off they get left up in the ir while 50 Cent gets scooped up.

Hey, at least they have the technology now if they want to try something with the Jedi Knight series.
The one with Katarn.

Probably Valve constantly delaying the TF2 updates on the 360! I MEAN COME ON! But.. knowing Valve's track record, it'l be worth the wait. Maybe not the $10 Microsoft's charging though..

Also I feel I should mention GTA4, only because it was lamer than watching The Godfather in slow motion.. and in reverse.

For me it all really depends on Fallout 3. Everything else fails to register in comparison.

I'd have to say spore was the biggest dissapointment for me, the game wasn't as intuative as I was hoping
there wasn't any flow to the game at all.
What you did in the creature stage had no effect on how you did in the tribal stage.
But other than that this year has proberly been one of the best in gaming.
Massive list of amazing titles that I dont have nearly enough time to play them.

i don't think it's so much "pessimism" as it is there were very few genuine surprises this year. Fallout kicks ass, yes, but we've known it was coming for four years now. Starcraft and Diablo were a huge deal when they were announced, but apparently Blizzard's trying to dick the fanbase on price, which tempers that. after Nintendo's Falcon-Punch-to-the-fanboy-nuts E3 showing, Too Human being utter garbage(and it's resulting flop endangering the hope of Eternal Darkness 2) Spore being crap and the LBP debacle, there's been more than plenty to be disappointed about.

I was really dissapointed with Too Human. Nintendo's E3 outing didn't make me too happy either.
