Copy Clerk Posts: 58 Joined: 27 Oct 2008 | It depends... On PC I'd say Pro Evo is better due to FIFA's worse graphics (still old engine, bad optimization), gameplay and controller configuration (I had to edit a file with notepad in order to move the "start"-button, wth?) On 360 or PS3 however, FIFA 09 is sliiightly better imo. It has the nicer graphics and the gameplay is severely different from the one on PC, offering the same possibilities in my offensive play as PES. But the dribblings are more balanced, maybe because the defensive controls in FIFA are much more sophisticated (you can choose to only pressure the player in possession, waiting for a chance to actually go for the ball). It gives me the feel of more control than PES's frustrating "apparently you did nothing wrong, but the engine decided that that forward just pushes your defender aside"-moments, which happen far too often. But maybe that's only my sucky defense in general. =) |

Kid friendly? What do you mean by that?
Have you been paying attention over the last few years? What horrible design choices? Fifa's gameplay is far more in-depth and realistic to PES's. As far as I've heard, the PC PES has been OK, but on this generation of consoles ALL of the PES games have been lazy, rushed, and very buggy. PES used to be far and away the best but FIFA has steadily overhauled it. My friend assured me that PES had ironed out bugs and not been generally lazier with this generation of PES games. I went over his house. Penalty shootout. My keeper dived, and went underground. His penalty rolled in. I brought FIFA out of my bag. We played it. |

Everytime a FIFA game is released, gamers all over say that FIFA is the greatest footie game, always has been the better footie game, is more realistic, is more fun, yada yada. Then PES comes out and everyone forgets what they said before and praise it as the second coming instead. Both series edge each other out now and again, but overall they're quite evenly matched. I prefer PES meself though, unlicensed and all. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2381 Joined: 6 Mar 2008 | Anyone else think PES has been absurdly underrated by critics this year? In gameplay terms it's the best ever, in my opinion. I love the revamped shooting and passing and the computer AI is actually decent now. The main criticism people have is the lack of changes, something I find totally absurd - it's completely unrecognisable from 2 or 3 years ago! The PES series is notorious for fans immediately hating it and then changing their mind over the course of days/weeks/months. It appears as though EA's "we're the innovator now, honest!" hype has finally caught on. So yes, I'm a PES man through and through. It has never let me down (unlike FIFA, which has let me down more times than I can remember). |

How or why is it getting worse? |
Paperboy Posts: 43 Joined: 24 Oct 2008 | When I get bored of Fifa, I turn to Pro and vice versa. For me, I don't think its about one being better than the other, rather that they both offer a different style of play and interpretation of football. I enjoy both equally. However, despite pro,s customisation and the depth of the Master League, it always seems sterile without the full team licensing. |

Agreed, there's not really anything like playing with real players. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2019 Joined: 25 Jun 2008 | Speaking as someone who doesn't really like football, but enjoys great games, PES all the way. I've had so much fun playing PES with friends, I've tried playing FIFA but ball physics didn't feel right, like the gravity was fluctuating or something. I don't care if PES doesn't own the rights to the teams, like I said I don't care about or follow football. In PES I just made custom teams with all my friends in them or freaky characters anyway, plus the commentary is so bad it's good, especially in the old games, so is the amusing names they used for players who they didn't have the rights for, similar but not similar enough so as to avoid copyright infringement. Anyway, when I had the option I just turned the commentary voice to Spanish, it made scoring a goal so much more satisfying. For me, PES is simply the better football game & I don't give a shit that it doesn't feature the real, overpaid wankers that FIFA does, in fact that's a good thing. |
Paperboy Posts: 24 Joined: 19 Sep 2007 | I'm not a big fan of football either, but I choose FIFA when I feel like playing a quick fun match and PES when I want to play a longer and more intensive match. Both are fun in their own ways and complement each other quite nicely. |

Imo the increase of WTF-moments. The same forces must have been at hand which make international stars frequently miss a 10m pass to a still standing team mate so badly, that I once again may witness the joy that is my opponent's counter attack. The list goes on and on and I will not even start on the so called "goalkeepers"... *grinding teeth* Instead, I will be mean and suggest, that Konami should switch the player models into females. Then everything of the above might be credible again. Hurhur >_> (Exaggerating makes me feel better, don't hate me for that) |

A patch has already been released for the PS3 version which corrects kits and team/player names. |
Beat Writer Posts: 161 Joined: 29 Oct 2008 | The age old debate. Personally, I grew up playing FIFA, then played the PES4 demo by accident one fine day and so far, FIFA hasn't matched the gameplay or even graphics of PES on the PC. I only play on the PC so thats how I will make my judgment of both games, I dont give a shit about console versions cos I don't own any. Anyways, I have played PES 4,5,6 and 2009 demo so far and FIFA 2000/01/02/03/04/08 and 2009 demo. I think that FIFA feels too mechanical and the transitions between animations are no where near smooth as PES which flows beautifully from one action to another. It feels natural and the ball physics/player movement is enjoyable rather than being uhhh 'jerky'. Thats the major difference between the two. You always hear people say about the 'feel' of PES and this is the reason for it, top draw smooth animations. The areas where FIFA is way ahead is Audio, Licenses, Presentation and Online. Playing on the PC, one can utilize the god sent program 'Kitserver' (created by juice/robbie) along with patches for kits, stadiums, balls, chants, music etc. Its football nirvana !! Of course, these are user created patches but they give PES what it lacks. I personally enjoy the PES Master League more because of its sports rpg feel and simple navigation. And wanting to play the game also helps :p The online component still bugs me as I do play FIFA 2008 but ONLY multiplayer once in a while. PES needs a lot of work ( maybe m wrong cos I haven't got PES 2009 yet ). So until EA provides a close enough gameplay to PES or gives Seabass truckloads of money to never make a PES game, I am sticking to PES. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1075 Joined: 4 Sep 2008 | One thing that in recent iterations has bothered me about PES is the way the players run along the points of the compass. The physics of dribbling are alot more realistic looking in FIFA. And collisions in 09 are great. |

PES/ISS has always had eight-point movement for running, passing & shooting. Only the completely useless manual pass allows 360 degree control. edit: looks like I misread your post. Sorry. |

Maybe not getting worse but certainly not getting better. At least with fifa every year you see an improvement and it seems the guys at EA are actually trying to make a better game. With pro evo however they seem content with just putting a new face on the box and adding one trivial new feature. Whereas the gameplay remains untouched and although it was great a few years ago pro evo seems happy with you basically paying 40 quid for the same game. |

Are you serious? As I said in an above post, the game is almost unrecognisable from a few years ago. Shooting and passing has been completely changed. Dribbling has been made easier and defending is harder than ever. Crossing is totally different. The AI is smarter and far more attack-minded. You may have read a few reviews which claim the game is unchanged but, speaking as someone who has played it regularly for a fortnight, I can safely say it is a completely new experience. As I also said in a previous post, the PES series is notorious for people immediately hating it and then gradually adjusting to the changes. This year is no different. The only reason FIFA is so radically different each year is because EA constantly fail and have to remake the game from the ground up. FIFA09 is the first version since FIFA '95 which can be classed as "not abysmal". Still, when the best thing about a game is the loading screen you know you have problems. |

Agreed. FIFA09 now has this annoying habit of randomly dishing out the red and yellow cards when the ball goes out of bounds. It's bugtastic. |
Paperboy Posts: 43 Joined: 24 Oct 2008 | One thing that I think is missing from both games is a decent trophy celebration. After I win a cup or championship, I want to be treated to a rousing victory animation, something that makes it feel more rewarding. Like you've achieved something. I know its superficial. But I wanna see a more show-biz! Players walking around the stadium mexican waving to the fans and then walking up the stands to collect their medals. Oh yeah, and the players celebrating with the trophy! And FIREWORKS, STREAMERS, CONFETTI! Am I asking for too much everyone? Like ISS 64. A great all-round footie game as I remember! |

For those who like this type of game which do you think is better?
FIFA is very player n kid friendly which makes it very easy to just pick up and play but has some horrible design choices.
PES has amazing gameplay but takes ages to get into it and doesnt own the rights to many teams which is very annoying.
