...You were expecting the graphics of a game for the N64 to spontaneously improve over time?
Not at all, I'm just saying they're terrible. And you can't deny that.
I was a kid when it was released and I loved it, expansive world, interesting characters and awesome weapons. And a horse!
Not my favorite game since I never got around to play it that much (didnt own a N64), but it is still a very big yay. It had amazing graphics for the time, and it was really atmospheric, with big environments, good puzzles, and interesting boss fights.
Maybe. But should that even be a factor for a game that's over ten years old? Shouldn't it be glaringly obvious that it won't be comparable to the present day standard? Surely you have other arguments to make besides graphics. That's just... shallow.
I can deny that. They are colorful and vibrant and looked excellent when the game was released. The only reasons you have given for not liking it are that the graphics are terrible compared to graphics from games two generations younger and that you were bored. You didn't say how it bored you or anything. I know this isn't a review, but if you want to argue that a game is bad you have to treat it like one. The graphics wont change over time, anyone with half a brain knows that. Tell us why you don't like it and compare it to a better game and maybe we will be able to take you seriously.
Oh, for the love of god, we just closed a OoT thread like yesterday, and immediately, an inferior copy emerges.
The game was absolutely fantastic, and still is to a point. There are parts of the game that made me cringe and should not have existed. For example: Hey! Hey! HEY! Hey! Listen! Hey! However the premise of the game and the use of music to move everything forward was what made it shine.
It doesn't really top my own personal "Best Games Ever" list, but I don't think it's overrated. Honestly, it deserves every bit of praise it gets. Except the Water Temple. It's nearly as bad as Turtle Rock was in "A Link to the Past", and that's just inexcusable.
Well, for it's time - it was pretty amazing. Graphically speaking, I was impressed. I was also impressed with how long the game lasted - all the environments, all the quests, and it all fit into that cartridge. I was a pretty young gamer back then, I got the N64 when I was 10, and the Ocarina of Time was the first game for me that had an epic feel (it was also the first Zelda game I ever played) and felt expansive. In short, it was the first game that, to me, felt like it contained a WORLD, and I can tell you, a 10 year old kid is impressed by that. Looking back at it, I am still impressed with it, and I still recall having a lot of fun (as well as frustration, especially when stuck in certain areas). Had I played it when I was older, would I have had as much fun? Yeah, I think so. For me, it was a really ground-breaking game - I had never played anything else like it. But hey - not everyone likes it. If it bored you, it bored you. And that's just fine. Maybe you had played other, better games before hand. Or maybe your expectations were hyped. Or maybe you didn't like the game mechanics or the thematic setting or the story. No one has to justify why they don't like a game. If your friend gave you verbal abuse just because you didn't like it, then nuts to him.
True, but I argue that the duel with Shadow Link offsets the Water Temple's frustrating layout.
Oh yeah theres the repetetive fetch questing and irritating (and often painful) dialoogue. It also (this is purely my opinion) has a terrble fighting system. (Sorry if this is a duplicate I've only just ventured onto this board.)
I wouldn't go to say it was the best game ever although it is a great game. I just think people put it up there because it was the first Zelda in 3d.
The problem with this OP, is that you're viewing it from a modern perspective. It's like going back to play the original King's Quest, or even the Zork games (Who remembers those?). They were great for their time! But we aren't in that time. You've been introduced to games with slicker gameplay, better graphics, and overall more modern presentation from an industry that has only grown for over 2 decades. You can't expect to understand or really appreciate the older games if you weren't there when they were released. Now, some people CAN do that, but I'd say the majority can't. Go ahead and try to play 'Quest for Glory: So You Want to be a Hero' and see if you like that game. Or the original Space Quest. Heck, wasn't there a youtube or gametrailers video with some 13 year old kid saying how crappy Golden eye was? That kid was pushing strained peas out his ass when that game came out! Simply put: If you weren't there, you can't understand how it impacted gaming or gamers. Some people can enjoy an old game and get an IDEA of how the players of that time would have enjoyed it, but only those who were there can truly get it.
Amen. QFT The lord spake, and it was good.
I actually loved the water temple. Am I weird?
ahh, i loved Ocarina. I payed through it when i was ten and it was mindblowing; there aren't really any games that compare to it today in terms of how advanced and massive the game was. You had to play it during its prime to really understand its greatness.
I understand this point of view but I don't stand by it.
Played OoT when I got my gamecube, came in a special package deal when I picked up Windwaker. Didn't really like it. Found it a bit boring, bit tedious, didn't really draw me in that much. Played it for about an hour before I switched to something else. Other people may like it, that's their business. I didn't. I don't hate it, that'd just be silly, I just don't like it.
It's an N64. How did you think they would hold up against modern graphics? That's a rather unfair way to judge trhe game. I liked it. But in a hundred years, they might look back at our HD and say "Pfffahh! How could they live with such primitive graphics?"
For all you people saying the graphics of the game are bad, think again...
Then they are still bad...
If you are comparing it to modern games, then you're looking at it all wrong- as a few people in this thread have made sure to correct you already. For its time- I would say Ocarina was the best in its day, although I would almost it and its sequel are better than Twilight Princess.
The graphics may not be the best, but at the time there were frickin awesome. You can't base a system that has been obsolete for 2 generations and compare it to a PS3 or 360. As for the game itself, it doesn't top my list but it makes the top 5, Ocarina of time just had a feel that seemed to fit.
Don't argue for the sake of arguing, spaz91... yea- they were "bad" but it was a 64 bit console. Thats like stating oranges taste like oranges even after you bake em with apples...
awesome game - first game i played on a N64 - must admit tho there were a few things that annoyed me - the replayability of it doesnt excite me (maybe i should just say the replayability was poo) the story line makes me soo jealous... ...why cant i come up with something tht gud and "Hey Listen" - got a bit repetitive after ohh about 5 secs! but apart from that OoT is an awesome game and the horse aspect is always great fun
I think your missing my point. It's not the graphics that ruined it for me really. When I played it (for roughly 2 hours) it felt dead. The only thing that kept me playing was the hope for the brilliance that I had hoped for (possibly over hyped?) but nothing.
Again, I'd say it's because you weren't there. People who played OoT when it first came out saw it as an amazing transformation of the character they loved in Link into 3D. Never been done before! Crazy! IT was new, it was fresh, it was awesome. Twilight Princess, as you said, had all the good aspects, just better graphics? Well so what? Where was the 'awe' factor? Where was the fresh? The new? TP was a great game that was well received, but where OoT blew players minds when it came out, TP was just prettier. I don't expect you to 'get it'. You weren't there.
So what you're saying is that all the people who love OoT simply love it cos it was awesome when it came out and they played it when it first came out? I think I understand now.
Yay. Loved it then, still love it and will love it for a long time. *brushes dust off n64 while humming the Gerudo Valley-theme*
Nooo... They're awesome and the music too.
Only thing I don't like about Ocarina of Time - aside from the lack of a 'kill Navi' secret ending - is that it's because of OoT's relationship to Link to the Past that everyone says all the Zelda games are the same.
Yay. So your saying that people now a days wont like OoT because they didn't experience and us older gamers can't appreciate it because the graphics are poop? 1. When you look at today's games for: graphics, story, music, game play even though the graphics are good the story/game play is usually lacking, GTA4 for example. The graphics may not be what they are today, but the game is still 5/5 for the rest. 2. Not only is OoT #4 on Wii's virtual console top downloads, but Link to the past is #3, so don't give me that people prefer graphics over game play garbage.
I'm ashamed to admit that I got stuck on this very early on within the first dungeon trying to defeat the Spider 'boss'. Simply, could not do it. Something to do with trying to correctly 'lunge' into the screen when I don't have a Stereoscopic display... Never got to see Hyrule field. Sad face.

Does anyone else think that this game is seriously overrated? I've seen in quite a few polls now that people vote it the beast game ever. I've played it and it bored the hell out of me! The graphics are shit (I know they were good when they came out but it doesnt stop them from being shit now. I told this to a friend of mine and was verbally abused for it for some time. So does anyone else agree with me or can you tell me why it's a good game?
