However you could say that if you're already looking forward to a game and a demo is released and you play it it could take off the edge of playing the full game when it gets released. ...Still I wouldn't compare it to 'popping your cherry'. |

Paperboy Posts: 25 Joined: 22 Apr 2008 | Cliff is a fucking asshole. Seriously, he's sooo arrogant. He's like "My game, Gears of War, is the best game in the world." He's like one of those 12-year old kids who sit and scream into a microphone when playing "hailo fwee". Unfortunaetly, he had minor skills in the art of "game-making", and became a game producer. ... What a sad world. |

It's got guns. They're just not that useful when you want to pull off awesome running and jumping moves. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 667 Joined: 27 Nov 2007 | This is probably the kind of people that started - and will make a standard of the fad of paying money to play a demo. I know that demo exclusivity has been something more and more common this days but this moron will probably put pricetags on demos because to him the idea of a free taste of a game is equal to taking a girls virginity. Of course people are going to scratch games of fthe list if they tried the demo if the demo SUCKS. Playing the demo of a game might discourage you from buying the full game, if the demo SUCKS. Seriously. This guy is an idiot on every level. |
Muckraker Posts: 324 Joined: 21 Apr 2008 | He does have a point somewhere though. I haven't seen all the footage, but you don't get a good look at the enemies. If your running all the time, there better be something scary chasing you, otherwise it takes out the rush/urgent feeling I think is great in a platformer. (And no, time limit's aren't that scary) |
Press Junketeer Posts: 360 Joined: 5 Mar 2008 | Really Mirror's Edge is one of those ideas that is completely off from the norm. While Gears of War is a great game, it's something that's been done many, many times before. Until Cliff can actually come up with a real new idea, he should keep his mouth shut. |

Well, those people you see seem to be almost constantly shooting at you. I think it takes about three quick shots to kill you. Question is, are bullets scary? |
Beat Writer Posts: 168 Joined: 28 May 2008 | nothing scary you just run to get away. Kinda like a first person video game version of black guys and police. They aint afraid of them they just dont wanna get caught. Thats pretty much mirrors edge in a nutshell. (By the way dont start calling me a racist please. It's hard to be racist against your own kind.) |

Press Junketeer Posts: 490 Joined: 23 Nov 2007 | He is right in that playing the demo does remove the incentive to buy the game...after you learn that the main character is just too annoying, the control scheme is unworkable for you, or the mechanics just aren't to your tastes. And of course, as a developer, I'm sure he's expecting everybody to buy absolutely every game they have even a passing interest in. On release day. As a player, I'm inclined to disagree. |

I saw one video where you run headlong into a guy with a rifle, kick the shit out of him, and takes his weapon. That doesn't seem like they really are trying their best to get you. But hey, it could work better when your actually playing the game.
They should make "Mirrors edge 2: Run from the fuzz" or a European version "le edge du mirror: échapper de le flic" |

Ooooh. Who let the Sony fanboys off the leash! Trust me, I'm no Xbox fanboy (up with Sega! *sigh*) but I don't think Cliffy B is overly threatened by too many people after his game made so much money. I have to say from the video's I've seen Mirror's Edge looks pretty awesome, if it'll work when anyone's actually playing...that I'm waiting to hear about! The natural restriction of the 1st person perspective might make if difficult to get a sense of the environment. Still, if it rocks I intend to hijack my mate's PS3 for a while. BIG EDIT!!!!!!: I thought Mirror's Edge was a PS3 exclusive. Shut my mouth and spank my ass. Whoops. |

Alright! I thought from the hardcore PS3 advertising it's getting that it was an exclusive. Which i was a little upset about because it looks the tits. It looks like the controls might be a bit fiddly but I think I'll download el demo when I get home tonight. |

It still looks very good on the 360, but it was created with the PS3 as their main platform in mind, I think. |

I heard that it's coming out for Xbox, Ps3 and PC (Can anyone confirm this?), so at least we won't have those mindless exclusive arguments. The control schemes actually worry me a lot, i can see it how to play it on a xbox or ps3, but on a PC? Will they use the awsd scheme? Hope this is not another shitty port in which you need a game pad to play :\. User was banned for: FUN FORUM GAME THX FO PLAYIN :3. (Permanent) |
Paperboy Posts: 31 Joined: 13 Aug 2008 | So he's an idiot. What a surprise. I was unaware that there are idiots in the development community. Not. *reads the news* Oh. Well, it turns out that its you lot that needs to shut up. His opinion about demons (which he calls betas, which are an entirely different thing, but then again my opinion is malable about that in light of recent releases) are that they spoil the full game. They break expectation. Once you played the demo, you don't feel like playing the full game. That is a pheromone that he describes, whether it exists or not is another issue. I can hardly His opinion about Mirror's Edge however, is just that there should be enemies and how does them having guns will effect you. That's hardly unreasonable curiosity. |

According to IGN's listings that's right. It looked a little clunky with the fighting, and why does she drop the pistol in the E3 run through? Is there some story reason for her not killing (like it being more real worldlike). This game really slipped under my radar. 14th is still zombiegeddon day though. |

Actually, the game does have guns, but it is not required to actually use them. |

Considering the brief encounter with guns I had in the demo, you seem to be encouraged to not use them rather than they're simply "not required". There is actually an Escapist article on the demos=sex with a girl you just met thing already, though not on the Mirror's Edge thing. Doesn't terribly surprise me that he doesn't 'understand' it, he comes across as the frat-boy kind of gamer that LIVE and the 360 are famous for and Mirror's Edge doesn't really seem like that kind of game. Sort of. It's action packed definetly, got my blood pumping at least (Insert erection joke here?) |

Right on. Without any flame, Gears of War is text book game and doesn`t present ANY interest from a design point of view. It`s actually very easy to make providing you have a money printing machine like Microsoft has. Conclusion : People shouldn`t really adore this guy as a designer just because he made Gears of War. |

Never cared for Cliffy B. or Epic. I know UT99 / 2k4 were great games, but the company behind them is pretty questionable. Personally I have more respect for id Software. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 717 Joined: 4 Feb 2008 | Yeah, I'm also kind of tired of Cliffy B While he makes some average, and at times fun, games, he somehow thinks he is a god among men when it comes to game developers. It's time someone told him otherwise. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 784 Joined: 27 Aug 2008 | He never said it needed guns. Do people even read these things anymore? All he was implying is that an incentive to keep moving forward would - in his actual professional opinion - make the game better, even if those things giving you motivation were Goombas. "lol he made GeoW he must be dum and not understand good game design" Ugh... Edit: Where is everyone getting the idea that he thinks he's so amazing? Because he answers the questions interviewers gives him? |

Well first off MSG4 deserves to be insulted anyway, as for Mirrors Edge I was excited about this game until I played the demo. Now maybe a year from now for $5. the controls were not well thought out and lagged a bit, in a game that is all about controlling your body you don't want sloppy controls. Too bad though the maps would have made great FPS maps. User was banned for: does anyone know why. (Permanent) |

This has got to be about the funniest comment I've seen for ages :-D As to CliffyB, I personally think he is a bit of an arrogant twat. Gears of War was fun, but it was almost all grey or brown and had nothing particularly innovative, but Mirror's Edge actually has taken an interesting idea and is running with it ;-P |

All right, first off look at the games Cliffy B makes: UT, Gears of War. Guns, guns, guns, big guns, REALLY big guns, more guns, and some gun frosting on top. Of course he's not going to understand the appeal of Mirror's Edge. The point is that it's not another gun heavy FPS. It's supposed to not focus on gameplay, DICE specifically stated that in several interviews. Plus, there is something chasing you: the police. They're the one's shooting at you, and they're the enemy in the game. I found his Mario comparison kind of funny, because those Goombas never chased you. They just walked around minding their own business until some wierd italian plumber with a porn star mustache jumpd on their head and killed them.
Now, onto the demos causing people to not buy a game. If your game isn't good enough to make people want to buy the game to enjoy it, not to say that they played it, then you shouldn't bother releasing it. By what he's saying about his justification for not putting out a Gears 2 demo, it sounds like he's only making a game good enough for people to buy it to say they played it. The point of a demo is to let someone know if they want to spend their money on a game and make sure that they'll enjoy it, instead of potentially wasting their money. This is especially prominent now thatnew games cost upwards of $60. If you can't make a game good enoug that people who play the demo will want to buy the full game, then your game isn't good enough to buy in the first place, it's just that without the demo people won't find that out until too late. |
