And there it is. If I'm going to play any single player or online games, there's no reason for me to sit in the living room and do so. I'm going to play them on my computer instead. When I have friends over, the Wii is definitely the one I want, it's just more fun to pick up and play than any other console. The mass appeal, low price, and fact that it's just plain fun have catapulted it to victory! On a side note, I don't really care that the graphics are low poly, etc, I just wish it had a bir more oomph to support 720p. The anti-aliasing even in the best looking titles drives me nuts. On another side note: I've said it before, and I'll say it again. THe same people who complain that gaming needs to become accepted fully into the mainstream consciousness are usually the same people saying that anyone who plays the Wii isn't a gamer. You can't be exclusionary, and at the same time expect people to accept your pasttime. Grow up. |

Oh yay... Another controversy based thread... We haven't had any of those around... Anyways, hasn't someone posted a link to some actual statistics showing that the Wii actually got owned and the only advantage it has is in the "in-house" (that's Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft branded) titles sold? Which is mostly because Sony and Microsoft don't really develop a lot of titles. Regardless whatever the Wii sold was mostly due to fanboys, people who are too cumbersome to play a real console/computer so they pick the dumbed down version: The Wiimote and the fact that it was originally the cheapest console allied with the "gimmick" effect. But mostly, if Nintendo sold anything to anyone besides fanboys is because of Microsoft and Sony suddenly catching the stupid virus. If I have ever seen worst fuck ups in marketing history I honestly can not recall them right now... Sony and Microsoft just messed up big time. As it stands the Wii is still quite obviously the worst console out right now IMO, it has 1 full game worth the money (No more heroes) and everything else is either lame, boring, lame AND boring, or best played on any other platform... Even the PSP... |

Making huge piles of filthy filthy money for Nintendo. I think that's what they define as "win". |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1921 Joined: 24 Jan 2008 | Don't call me out on this, but am I the only one that doesn't see the Wii as a real console? it's just a novelty toy. Ok fine fine, it has its share of awesome games like Wii fit, metroid zack and wiki, mario galaxy, zelda, ssbb, and No More Heroes, but I never played it as much as my PS3. Which is a shame really. I can see a really large amount of hardcore based titles for the wii if developers tapped the potential of the console. |

But interestingly enough, the Xbox 360 has been outselling both the PS2 and the PS3 in Japan for a while now. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1588 Joined: 21 Nov 2007 | Fair enough that it's ahead on actual console sales but surely, on average, games on the PS3 and/or the 360 sell better? Because 90% of the people I know with a Wii don't actually use it and because of that, only have 2 or 3 games. Then that 10% only have 5 or 6 games. |

I have my doubts; perhaps you had Weasel coffee instead, or an imitation version not made from actual civets (which do exist, especially for tourists in Vietnam. Yes, people make fake civet coffee.) Not only is genuine Kopi Luwak ridiculously hard to find (the only real place to get a nice brew is in China), but due to the African Palm Civet being endangered because china eradicated thousands of them during the SARS scare in 2004, it is more than a few hefty chips of currency to get a cup of. I am talking hundreds for one pound of the stuff. If you had acquired a cup of it, then you are one of few who did not find it was the best out there - a nice rich chocolate flavor with no after taste. Which, for my analogy about how not everyone is right for the Wii, still fits. |

And the PS3 is selling it as a DVD player instead of a console |

Yeah, because everyone knows playing a video-game on a specific platform makes you a "real" gamer, but playing a video-game on other platforms don't...(yes this is sarcasm directed at you) |

Yeah, I read an article about that recently - Microsoft have been trying very hard to get sales up in Japan, and it seems to be working. They are (as you stated) outselling the PS3, and are deliberately buying exclusives they believe the Japanese will buy. |

blu-ray players are selling for £250, so buying a PS3 just for it is still an option, for now... |

And the PSP is being sold as an MP3/Movie player that surfs the internet instead of a console. |

well Sony has ripped off from both other consoles and now the 360 has ripped off at least from the wii so... Sony has its sixaxis and "trophies"(acheivements), and now the 360 has its "avatars"(miis) |

Case in point |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 907 Joined: 15 Jun 2008 | The Wii made good games that were accessible. When the PS3 and Xbox360 saw this they were like "Lulz, we makes casual games too!!" But they made retarded shovelware and labled it casual. Third party developers saw the Wii and they also made crappy shovelware, "They aren't REAL gamers, they won't even notice" the third party developers said. But oh no, they noticed. So the absolutely massive demographic of people who want to play videogames but don't care for the Hardcore crowd all bought the Wii. And the Xbox and PS3 were all like "But why don't they like us!?!?!" And it's because they didn't understand that there is a difference between casual and retarded. Casual gamers are just as intelligent, but they don't want a game that lasts 96 hours and you need superhuman reflexes to beat the tutorial. |

I didn't know everyone was having a competition. And it ended... already? Hmm, I see. Well I'll just stick with my "loser" PS3 and play video games for fun, like a loser should. |

There's also a difference between wild grown Civet and farm raised. The truth is though, no matter how expensive something is or what kind of reputation something has, it's always a matter of personal taste. Wine is another classic example of this. I can go through a reserve wine list and find wines I like even more for a heck of a lot cheaper on a core menu. FYI, I don't even particularly like wine all that much, I've just worked around it for awhile now. So what would interest me versus what would interest an aficionado are two different things. Certain people would say that red wines goes with X-type of meat, while others say white wine goes with Y-type of meat. But, in reality, drink whatever you think goes best. Not what some other unwritten rule would make you think. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 428 Joined: 20 Oct 2008 | The only real reason the Wii has outsold other consoles is because Nintendo for the most part ignored gamers, aiming instead for the much larger population of people who don't know how to turn on a computer. Please note that I'm not saying the Wii doesn't have fun games or games for hardcore gamers, or that it doesn't appeal to gamers, I'm only saying that most of the games are not aimed at the gaming community specifically. |

The battle is not over yet so NO ONE has "won" yet. Don't count the chickens before the eggs have hatched. |
Beat Writer Posts: 155 Joined: 18 Sep 2008 | I think the Wii won for a few reasons: (still dont think it did but this is y if it won) First: its cheap Second: because its cheap low wage families can now afford entertainment, and since there is such a high percentage of low wage people in America, thats y so many sold. Third: it had a good name backin it, Nintendo. well it was a good name till the wii was released... Fourth: the idea of having a star wars game where u can use ur wii remote as a lightsaber and actually make it have an effect. Fifth: the Wii was made for fun family entertainment that was acceptable for all ages, and with the amount of families in the US today, and not being able to make ur child shut up because ull be arrested for fucking sayin no, parents will do wutevr they can to shut their kids up. |

Or maybe they don't like pirating their games? |
BANNED Posts: 12958 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | Having a number of friends who actually love their Wii (and one who was absolutely rabid for it), I think its really the controls - it makes the player feel like they have a greater impact over the game itself - not in a sensible way, but in a way that seems bigger than a few presses on the gamepad and combos with the Triangle and Circle button. And, don't. Come on, we all know the writing is on the wall - Nintendo's lead is insurmountable, and their sales show no reason why they would slow down, as their market doesn't need their games to be the latest and the best (as evidenced by Wii Fit being the highest selling game worldwide for 7 frigging months straight, being pushed back only 4 times). The Wii is the best selling games console of the seventh Generation. I can only fear what this will mean to the rest of us. You call an influx of shitty shovel-ware "more diverse and bountiful"? Aside from the one or two new innovations we have seen from Nintendo themselves (Wii Fit, Wii Music, and Wii Sports), the Wii is a garbage dump of shovel-ware. Instead of focusing on high quality games, we see Ubisoft shit out a new Petz or Animalz or Prostitutez. Why? Because they see casual gamers eating this shit up in barrels.
This isn't some thing that I myself have seen. Just about every other passionate gamer has seen this happening too. Gamers, developers, and Nintendo themselves knows that the casual market is the primary target for the Wii. You would have to be a damned idiot to say otherwise. I have no doubt that the Wii already has and will have a profound influence on the industry. Of course, you seem to be under the assumption that any influence is necessarily a good influence. I praised the Wii early on in it's life-cycle due to the innovative controls that it brought, but have quickly come to realize that these innovative controls have largely been ignored by third-party developers and only Nintendo has occasionally stepped up to the plate to use these innovative controls in interesting ways.
I don't hate kids, it's just their under-developed taste for entertainment tends to put out pretty bad stuff.
Of course. I never said they were just for single-player. I said that they weren't just for group multi-player, as the original poster had suggested. Please don't put words in my mouth. |

True that. Nintendo are pimps whoring our the world of video games to everyone who used to make fun of people like us for even playing video games. It makes me sick. Wii Sports, what a crock of utter stinking shit. It is embarrassing. |

Yeah, what? I wasn't aware the console wars were even far enough along for a clear winner to emerge. I mean, don't we have another 3 years to go (at least) before the next console war begins? The PS3 or 360 might pull a fast one near the end, and the novelty of the Wii may well wear off before too long. I think it already kind of has. |

Remember when you were a kid, or if you have a kid, when you see something another kid has or your friend has.
In this case its the Wii.
You see a Wii, see how fun it CAN be then you end up buying one.
Most of the Wii owners hardly touch it once they buy it, its just fun when you have friends over.
