People keep saying the SSBB review was controversial because it was over hyped right? Well so was fable 2.

True but SSBB has been out for months and Fable 2 has been out for only a few days give it some time.

Edit: Plus SSBB comments had a lot of flame wars because the Escapist was divided on their opinion of SSBB between awesome and flaming pile of ass, while the majority of people agree that Fable 2 was OK not great but pretty good.

The SSBB review pissed a lot of people off, which is probably why it had so many comments. the lack of comments for his later videos could show that people agree with what he's saying?

I still watch it whenever a new one comes out each Wednesday. But, funnily enough, a friend of mine said yesterday that he was 'losing faith' in Yahtzee because he 'hates great games' (he meant Dead Space here) and 'loves sh*t ones' (don't know what he was getting at there).

Thats a good point. But honestly what are the odds of people agreeing with everyone of the things said in his recent video's? Slimmer then a bullimic stick bug.

I wouldn't say that exactly.

Although his reviews seem, well to put it bluntly, not as funny as they used to be and sort of dated. Don't get me wrong, I love the reviews more than the next guy, but I don't know.

His other reviews with more comments just pissed more people off.

The comment spike for SSBB died off after about 2 or 3 weeks. Fable 2 has been out for roughly that long.

I would point out that SSBB pretty much delivered what was expected of it, and Yahtzee ripped into it, i found the game alright, but that just made it more hilarious :p

Fable 2 on the other hand, just didn't deliver, i still liked alot of it, but there were some aspects overwhelmingly dissapointing, which i wont mention in case of spoiling, and the zeropunctuation review was pretty much expected. SSBB might not live up to its hype true, but Fable 2 doesn't even come close. anyway thts just my point of view.

Yeah i'm setting myself up to be attacked by Fable 2 fans aren't i but oh well........ i still liked it it just seemed like they chucked it out half finished, consequence of the industry over the art as it were. Oh and sombody please gag Peter Molyneux.

(what was that?? no..... no....... NOOOOOOO a fable 2 fanboy!!! urk *dies* oh damn the dogs pissing on my dead body, hehe, silly Chips, look at his little face)

I have never disagreed with yatzee on anything... and have felt no need to complain, though that includes all his old videos too... Needless to say I have liked things his doesn't (Alone in the Dark is one... please don't kill me) but I have agreed with what he says. =)

it's probably just because people have finally realised that yahtzee doesn't give two shits.

Exactly, overall traffic does not = comments, as I have already stated people have stopped posting in the ZP threads because they know Yahtze dosn't care.

Um. Hurr. Of course the videos that have been out longer are going to have more comments and views than the ones that have been out less than a week. What the hell.

When the fable 2 review has been out as long as SSBB has now, it still wont have as many views. Look at his earlier ones. By your logic time=Views. If that were the case his first movie would have thousands of comments. But it doesnt.

What are you talking about Fable 2 has only been out for 4 days and comments aren't a good judgment of its popularity look at how many views it has.

he probably made the mailbag showdown thingy because he didnt have any games to review. I think it's at the end of that one that he says that he needs a bit more time to play gta4.

You say he didnt have any games to review and yet then you say he says he needs more time to play GTA 4. Do you see the flaw in this argument?

Will you believe it if I say it? Comments don't equal page views. His videos are as popular as ever.

Example:
The most popular video has almost 2 times the page views of SSBM, but it only has a 3rd of the comments.

I think he meant the episode, not the game.
And if you're just going to get annoyed at people answering your question then don't ask one.

Okay then what video might that be? If thats the case then im sure there is a logical reason for it.

Condemned 2 and no more heros were right before SSBB and they have a couple of the lowest comment count of all videos? so idk what you are smoking? :)

The amount of comments doesn't necessarily show that less poeple are watching. I still watch it religiously.

Yeah, I don't bother to comment usually, but I still watch it religiously too!

It takes time for comments to go up. I assume the one with 1200 is the super smash bros. brawl review. Trust me Yahtzee won't have any shortage of viewers as long as games are being made.

Your wrong. Zero Puncuation is going up in popularity because its great. Comments mean nothing, the reason some have more comments than others is because they are controversial.

Donald Mcronald?

Anyways, I just think that no matter how good something is, the longer it goes on, the less impact it will have. That's why I reckon there are less views for the newer ones.

All I have to say is Melee is still one of my favourite games and I became a die hard fan boy who would also defend it with my supple body. That was back then before I watched Yahtzee's review, funny thing is I mostly disagreed with his review but hated Brawl for other reasons.

Before that 2 years before it was released, I was overwhelmed as soon as I heard there was a new one in the making. Straight away got on the internet and spent alot of time researching it, I was never so excited about a game before and that goes for the thousands of other fan boys/girls I was discussing with. Everyone was talking about what characters should be in it and all recent updates by every passing second, every day! However it was 1 week before the game was released that I found out they fucked it up, which is why I will never get that excited ever again!

I am using myself as an example to maybe why the SSBB review was full of flame and protectors of Yahtzee. I would say in my experience with every game I played on every console that Brawl was easily the most hyped up game ever. I swear, I cannot think of anything else in my entire life that made people go ape shit about it 2 years before anything was released. I remember they said 1 year when it was first mentioned.

In fact, maybe Brawl is the reason why nothing gets so hyped up so much anymore!

Comments are bi-product of views. The more people that view, the more chance of comments. Therefore the more views, the more comments and vice versa. Unless the Escapist implements some kind of view counter like that of youtube there is no better way of gauging traffic.

No, comments are a bi-product of people who like to comment. I have watched Yahtzees critiques for a good while now, ever since the CoD4 review was linked on the official CoD4 forums. Zero Punctuation is not The Escapist, it is only a part of it. I only signed up here the other week, and to join in the discussions taking place here, not to comment on Yahtzee. Now I have a forum account I may leave an odd message in those featured content threads. But although I enjoy his work immensly I have never felt a need to express that on these forums. Why? Because I don't think he cares too much either way. Whether it's people saying "yathsie i luv u i want ur kidz!!" or "i h8 u dood u h8 my gaem!!1!", it's pretty irrelevant. This also works in reverse - out of millions who view his vids I don't think many will go through to the trouble of setting up an account just to leave a few words which anyone with any sense knows he doesn't give two crocodiles about anyway. Most of those who would leave comments or spam him with email, good or bad, have all been ignored and moved on.

In any case, your basis for claiming it is dropping in popularity is at best unscientific. I noticed that this week though many people had problems viewing the Fable 2 article due to the server being over-loaded, which does put a bit of a bullet in your theory that it is falling in popularity.

Note: The SSBB thread could have had just two people commenting over and over again (I doubt it was) but the point is it might not have had more people commenting just the people made more coments than they usually would.

Fable 2 wasn't the funniest one yet but I wouldn't say his popularity is declining,

Unlike the AVGN...

Traffic figures, happy? Page views is the third tab. It's not a perfect measure, but statistically I imagine it should be fine.

It's a graph of Escapist in general, but I think it's safe to assume that the regular spikes happen around Wednesday. That being said, they do seem to be getting shorter and further in between.

However, upon a comparison with other gaming sites everyone seems to be having a decline starting around May. Do a comparison with penny-arcade and you'll find that they both take a significant decline at about the same date. Whereas a neutral site like webster.com stays where it is. Non-gaming webcomics seem to stay level.

I don't know why. I would have thought it was seasonal, but in the 15 month projection there isn't a similar dip last year. Maybe it's because of some event that happened in may that turned people off gaming. Or some game that came out in may that everyone's too busy playing.

Or perhaps it has something to do with the way alexa gathers data. Perhaps people have just stopped using their toolbar. As I said, it's not exactly a perfect system.

In short, yes there seems to be a decline in traffic, and no, it doesn't seem to be Yahtzee's fault. Unless you're going to say that every gaming humor website became crappy at the same time.
