PS3 Wireless

Is there anyway to make a PS3 wireless capable? I want to get my PSN up and running but I have no immediate means to get a cable from my PS3 to my modem without buying my GF a wireless card.

You'll need to buy a wireless adapter.

You don't have a model with it built in?

Uh the PS3 is natively wireless, you shouldn;t have to buy anything to get it to work. The downside is that the PS3 wireless receiver is.... um... well how can I put this nicely.... a tad shit.

I have a PS3 sat next to my PC the PC wireless receiver is right next to the PC and gets a constant 70% signal. The PS3 signal on the other hand goes from as low as 10% to as high as 50%. It is frankly crap.

The thing is you need to set the PS3 network connection to wireless and then let it set up automatically. Honestly if you can't put a cable from your AP to your PS3 you're gonna be better off buying a set of network plugs that plus in to your mains sockets and then using them to connect your PS3. That's what I use and they work very nicely.

WRONG.

Correct.

Although I wonder if the receiver is shit if your computer is right next to your router, and getting only 70%. Looks like the router is shit, if anything.

But, I digress. It's built right in, don't be tricked into buy anything unless it doesn't work well enough for you (As mentioned above by Laughing Man)

Well the 20gb didn't have wireless so he may be right.

Correct.

Nowt wrong with the router, I didn't say it was right next to the computer, why would I use wireless if it was right next to the router? The PC and PS3 is up stairs in my 'entertainment room' the router is downstairs right next to the phone socket.

I have the old 80 gig model, it came with a network cable so I assumed that it wasn't wireless.

No that one is wireless.

Good to know, maybe now I can start DLing Little Big Planet levels, the lag thing doesn't bother me because I hate OL multiplayer anyway.

Mines the opposite, mine has to go through 2 walls and although I don't know how to check the strength, I very rarely get lag.

Well then maybe your house is causing interference, that happened to my friend with his wireless network. For a while he had it on the north side of his house and it worked like poop, but when is older sister moved out and he switched rooms to hers on the east side it was golden.

Linksys WRT54G v4(edit)
60gig PS3

Goes through 50 feet and two walls and my PS3 gets great signal.

WRONG.

I presumed he had the new 40 GB version which does not have wireless installed.

Since when did the 40gb not have wireless?

I was going to buy a PS3, decided not to and got a 360, but I remember reading that the 40GB version would not have wireless. Does it?

I stand corrected. My bad.

If you have a PS3 that doesn't have built-in wireless, you'll probably need a wireless access point to connect. I use a Linksys WGA600N access point hooked to my Xbox 360. It's still not as good as a cable, but it's the next best thing.

That's paired up with a Linksys WRT610N - which I can't recommend enough if you're in the market for a router. It runs a separate network on both wireless-N frequencies, letting it go up to the higher speeds for equipment that supports it while keeping another network for the older stuff that doesn't.

It does. I think it's the Xbox that doesn't have wireless. (mine anyway)

EDIT: I've looked around (and by that I mean searched in Google) and the only PS3 that doesn't have wireless is the 20gig.

Yep, that's the only one.

I have a 40GB and it has wireless. Either that or I've gone completely insane and I've just been imagining myself playing online.

Must be the 20GB one then.

That only affects the PS3 reception? Like I said in my first post I have the PS3 next to my PC. The PC gets a constant 70% Wifi signal the PS3 signals varies constantly from 10% - 50%. The only answer seems to be the PS3 has a shite Wifi receiver, either that or my PC has an amazing Wifi receiver.

yup it does have built in wireless, i'm going to suggest getting at least a wireless g if not wireless n router for it

i got a wireless n router and the ps3 runs great on it

I'm kidding, I do have the 40GB one and it does have wireless. Our country doesn't even get the 20GB
