As some, if not a lot of 360 users here will know, the new dashboard launches tomorrow. Of course there has already been a lot of discussion about the Avatars being a "Mii-ripoff", so I figured that maybe we can ignore that aspect in this topic, and instead focus on... well, everything else in the update, really. The built-in Netflix fuctionality, the option to install games on your harddrive to make them run faster, the new layout, the new party system, stuff like that. So far not all the previews I've read have been completely positive, but I'm still curious to see how it all works out tomorrow.

Also, a friendly request: If you're just going to say something hilariously derogative about the avatar system, or remark that you're just not going to download it, maybe don't bother posting. This thread is for posting first impressions, discussing certain features, stuff like that.

Im looking forward to having 6-person chat more than the avatars, more than anything in fact. It'll make organising a TF2 game so much easier.

Is that going to be like Private Chat, but increased from 2 participants to 6? Because, I would trade a kidney for that.

Yes, supposedly you can chat with people in the room, and enter games together and such.

If I've understood it correctly, it's better than that. Not only does it keep you together in the chat, it can also hand off that status to the game so everyone in the gathered party gets put on the same server/lobby/whatever when you start up the same game.

Apparently you can Party up in the Netflix lobby, but I don't know if that means everyone has to subscribe to watch the movie or just the party leader.

I like the new dash- they've not confused "accessibility" for "less functionality", which is probably a first for things that have been re-designed for the casual gamer market.

Only real problem I'm having is that pressing the guide button when one of the little notifications pop up no longer takes you to the screen relevant to the message, but now just the standard guide button screen.

Well let's go through the list...

Netflix - US users only, just taking up my precious hard drive space.

8 person chat and image sharing - Don't really care about this.

Marketplace on a PC via Xbox.com - I'll never use this.

New sound effects - Who cares?

Remove games with 0 gamerscore from your profile - what's the point?

Avatars - [insert sound that yahtzee makes at the begining of ssbb review]

The installing games thing is the only thing that is of any use to me.

Oh and by the way this update requires 128MB of free memory for whoever asked.

10AM roughly GMT. Convert that to your own time.

Really I am looking forward to the party system more than anything else. So often I am in a private chat with a friend, when i have to say "wait a minute I'm going into another chat, will only be a second." Now I can just invite them to the chat too, as 99% of the time, the person inviting me to chat is friends with the person I'm chatting with. Chat!

Ditto, that's one feature I will miss, though I've only had my xbox for maybe 3 weeks now. I'm neutral towards the Avatars, I don't care for them but I'm not opposed to them. The netflix I don't care about either, but I do like the new look. I'm also looking forward to the lag-free type thing in between the menus, it annoys me to have to wait a second for all my options to pop up when I hit the guide button in a game to check who's on or what Achievement I just got, etc... The bottom-line for me is I'm excited for it tomorrow, because it's something new.

I only really care about being able to install games. Everything else, not so much

Thanks. Anyone know how you speed up games loading by storing them on the disc?

It doesn't really, but the quiet is welcome.

So I've been messing around with it for a while now, I'm really starting to like it. The avatar is quite pointless though, most of the time it's just in the way. But the party system and the new layout actually work and look pretty smooth, so I'm pretty happy with it overall.

I'm not really too into the new layout, still having issues with the Netflix usage, and that avatar is just going to annoy the piss out of me, but the games to hard drive is actually working well for me, I don't have to turn my tv up so loud just to drown out the noise of the helicopter... I mean, disc drive.

I know nothing about the update other than the mii-like avatar system, have heard of netflix integration but don't know what it is, and the saving games to the hard drive to make them run faster (or run at all). I'm jumping on the update bandwagon because I like Fallout 3 and want to continue to like it. Someone claiming to be a beta tester for the new dashboard claimed that saving the game to the hard drive caused it to lag, crash, and bug out much less frequently. I'm excited.

Does this mean that you could just borrow games from your friends and install them on your xbox? Or do they have soemthign to stop this happening?
I'm sorry just i'm getting one for christmas so i dont really know about the update or anything at all.

You will still need the game disc to play. The installation just makes the game run smoother and load faster (in most cases).

I'm quite enjoying the avatars, since I made mine look like Agent Smith from the Matrix.

The party system is very enjoyable, since it allows you to have a chat with more than one person at a time, a welcome addition.

However, here is the first addition that really made me cry thanks. In the old sytem, when someone invited you to a game, you had to return to the dashboard before starting the game. But in the new system you can accept the invite straight away and you will be asked to insert the disc, at which point you will be whisked away to the game immediately. Pretty spiffy.

They seem to have streamlined most actions. Pretty sweet.

Pointless yes, but in the way? You don't really even see the avatars unless you're in the designated Xbox friends list, which you can also browse through the guide menu, so I don't really mind.

But yeah, it's an improvement on the previous dashboard, but more like an incremental improvement than a full blown revolution. The menus are much bit faster and clearer, but the only worth aside from that is for games like Fable 2 that really need the install. I haven't tried the party system yet, so I don't know how that works.

I actually really like it. The avatars are fun (though I'm curious how they'll handle new clothing options in the future) and the interface is more attractive. I'm starting to learn where everything is, and I'm finding it just as easy (and more fun) when compared to what we had yesterday. The fact that you can access all of the xbox's options while playing is excellent, I think. A great improvement.

I'm still at work, so I haven't had a chance to install yet. What are the problems with the Netflix? This is one of the main reasons I was excited about the update.

My xbox locked up twice and I had to restart it during the install process. First when I had to accept the new agreement and then when i was creating my Mii, i mean avatar. Its been fine since. The Netflix streaming is great though, the controls are good and it looks amazing on my 36 inch HD TV.

Ok. Allow me to rephrase...

How do you put them on the disc? I glanced at the explanation in the NXE intro then promptly forgot it thereafter. Yes, I am stoopid.

Ok so ive just checked it out. It keeps freezing up, and all my themes look like crap, as I expected. So, not the best impressions so far...

One of my friends had a problem with freezing. Hopefully It's something they'll fix, or a problem which doesn't happen as much once you've been running the new system for a while.

I'm getting lots of errors with it. Most of my themes don't work very well which is annoying but not too big a deal to me.

In 30 minutes, I have had two bigs that have made me have to litteraly hard reboot it. One trying to accept the terms of agreement and the other trying to load details about Fable 2.

I think there servers are getting hammered or something, but oh well no real big deal for me just an annoyance.
