If it's a well-done game it can work in any genre, if it's a badly done game it'd never work. Fallout 3 is a good example. In my opinion it's an awful game. It's not because of the genre change. It's because the game world doesn't make any sense at all. However, if it had been done well, it'd be awesome as an fps. If done correctly, a strategic town-management game in the same world would be cool too. You could hire people to go on expeditions, find old pre-war caches of resources, fight raiders, hire raiders to attack other settlements, and "save" them as mercenaries to get money, you could find tribal villages to trade with, scout out new settlements. A The sims/the guild-like game would also be cool in that setting, you'd control one family in a town like Shady Sands, or Broken Hills, you'd get a job, try to fix up a house to live in. You'd work your way up the political ladder, compete with other towns, and trade resources, etc. That also applies to almost all other games. If it's done well, the genre doesn't matter. If it's done badly, the genre again doesn't matter. What I'd like to play right now though, would be a tactical shooter set in Starcraft or Red Alert. |

Hmm, you get to stock a store and run a store in phase 1 of the game then in phase 2 after the Zombie event you play as a psycopath taking hostages defending your store from photo journalists. Some sort of Dungeon Keeper type game. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1010 Joined: 4 Dec 2007 | Rogue, except in the Oblivion engine. Not really a full genre-change, but enough to call it one, I say. STALKER except instead of bug-hive, a bug-less zone... Even with the bug-hive it still rules, though... Fallout as an FPS... oh, yeah... |

Having Catapults armed with dual Clan Gauss Rifles is fun for a little while, but pretty soon the whole idea behind the individual 'Mechs becomes utterly meaningless, turning them into nothing more than piles of stats and weapon slots. The further lack of customisation, e.g. sensors and ECM being fixed, plain all-around armour and the fact that none of the other gizmos (e.g. BAP, (L)AMS, etc.) is implemented makes the whole thing rather bland. And ofc the MechWarrior 4 models just look better. So a MechCommander game that uses a MechWarrior-like 'Mech customisation system. On a slightly more lighthearted note: |

If you're fine with turn based, MechWarrior is based off of the BattleTech wargame. It's even got a pen and paper RPG somewhere. |

While I like the depth that offers, I think I just prefer real-time - I like the direct feedback, especially MechCommander's with the little videos, tiny as it is it just makes it feel more like I'm commanding a team of people rather than some abstract "units". It also makes it feel more like a "real" battle, where you can't take the time to carefully plan your firing strategy in the middle of a firefight and coordinate it to coincide with your lancemates', you're always at least half a second behind on current events and your pilots will shoot shit and move on their own even if you sit back and don't give any orders. Turn-based is good for larger scale games, such as the Space Empires series, but if a game is supposed to depict hectic close-quarter firefights between gigantic towering monstrosities of metal, I prefer it to actually be a hectic close-quarter yadda yadda yadda rather than a careful, patient, let's-think-this-through turn-based game. |

Well, I suppose this might suit your tastes. Mind you, it's super-duper-pre-alpha testing, so don't expect the video to be accurate. It still looks very clunky. Plus, it's stuffed with buzzwords. I can't stand buzzwords. |

Hehe, it is. Boy, I can't wait to "orchestrate the ballet of death" - Ugh. I looks pretty terrible. Repetitive too. On topic, I'd like to see a game that crosses genres really well. You don't a whole lot of those these days. |

Mini-games would include, Red light / green light (Brumak turns around, roadie run as long as possible, dodging cover, etc. then when the brumak turns around, everyone hides behind cover, If he sees someone KABOOM, disgusting giblety mess. That actually sounds really fun. at least to me... |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 978 Joined: 25 Sep 2008 | I wouldn't really be interested in seeing actual genre changes.. but I do love dynamic campaigns. A LOT of games would benefit from this. The Total War series have their (basically) infinite replayability thanks to their dynamic campaign. Same goes for Falcon 4 and to a lesser extend Enemy Engaged. A lot of games that are just so linear would really benefit from something dynamic. Total war has probably hit the nail right on the head, and I think Stalker came pretty close to FPS dynamic 'campaigns'/persistent worlds. Shame it's still so buggy, and so many features have been cut. Man, if that game had coop....... Meh, it's all a big bunch of "if"s. |

The X series seems pretty similar. For 2D top down versions, Space Rangers and the Escape Velocity series. And to finally contribute meaninglessly, Dwarf Fortress the first person melee game. Or a Lego RTS. |

I'd almost like to say that Escape Velocity is better than EVE. I wasted so many hours of my life on E.V. such an awesome game when you can take over entire planets. |

Escape Velocity was incredibly enjoyable. Was glad when they ported the old versions over to Windows through Nova mods. Also, Polycon was really fun and I'll always have good memories of my Draconian Hand. |
