Achievements have ruined my gaming.

Right so let me just explain that i have an xbox and i play this xbox quite frequently.
Recently i've looked up at my games, i have around 12 varying from Bioshock to Transformers, and thought
"Hmmm why should i play these when the achievements are so hard?"
I think i've lost the plot a little as all i can think about is these bastarding achievements...
I buy a game, get as many achievements as i can get, then let it gather dust...

Just a bit curious if anyone else is feeling the same way as me?

P.s. Sorry about the (no text) at the beginning.

Edit: Not failing anymore, I apologize for that.

On topic, achievements only ruin gaming if you let them. If you ignore them then its just a nice surprise when you get one. Instead of tirelessly grinding for them.

Oh dear.

This'd better be edited soon.

Jesus, that was quick.
Within 10 seconds all you trolls had replied.
Grreeeaaattt.

How do people keep managing this?

Honestly...

Oh and why are we trolls for complaining? I don't get that either.

Aaanyway, I tend complete the game then think about achievements, I don't let them get in the way. If they allowed you to buy stuff on XBLA with the points you get from achievements then I would be REALLY obsessive.

Achievement have made me a better gamer. They set a goal for me to acomplish and make me better myself as a gamer. If the acievements are too easy I make my own up now.

aaah yes, but if you could turn OFF the achieves, whould you be man enough to DO IT??

If you don't like achievements, ignore them. It's pretty simple.

Nah, the main bitch about achieves is actually achieve whores. That bastard who jumps into the chopper and spends the whole match flying it into the corner of the skybox, away from the action, just so he can get a pilot achieve.

Pepole are trolling when they go about posting in someone elses thread just to comment that they don't like the thread. It is pretty rude and isn't necessary on a forum. If a thread doesn't interest you, just click back and read another. That is the entire point of forums.

@Op - I can't stand the achievement thingies. I hate doing a quest or soemthing and then getting that retarded pop-up super-imposed on my screen. If I could I would turn them off.

Achivements never really bothered me that much, I try to get some of the fun ones and leave the insert-soul-here difficult achivements to the achivement whores like my friends.

Yeah, definitely bad game design when it incentivizes useless actions in online play.

Yeah that's my annoyance as well. Like in Halo 3 where everyone was like "durs ok I want to get these achievements this playthrough so let's all make nice."

Meanwhile I spent my time actually working at running over idiots with the Mongoose. It's not that hard, geez.

Some achievements suck. (Halo 3) Get 10 kills w/ Energy Sword or some crap like that.

Achievements that teach you how to play the game, on the other hand, are pretty cool (L4D has a few like that. Brain Salad!)

Look closely. This thread started off with no text, so people are fully eligible to complain about it.

Which the op corrected and then apologised for.

Why do people seem to loose all they learned about manners and social ettiquette the instant their hands come into contact with mouse and keyboard?

If you look REALLY closely at my scenario, you'll see that it's NOT incentivising, the achieve is meant to go to skillful pilots that can do serious damage and not get shot down in the 15 minutes. What makes it whoring is when people gain the achieve via being a good pilot (not being shot down) but not in the way that the devs wanted. It's sort of like the "50 headshots with a pistol" being achieved by shooting your teammates in the back of the head :( You still have said headshots, but the idea was to get good enough at popping the enemy with a pistol, not that you spend the game being american a friendly firing person.

Yes, but they posted before he corrected it.

On the subject of everyone being dicks on the internet, I think thats more to do with anononymity than anything else. No repercussions, and it's much easier to be nasty to words on a screen than real people.

It literally incentivizes people to be in the air for a given amount of time. Given the lack of qualifying productive conditions for that achievement people will do exactly that to unlock it. It's bad game design especially since the developers know that achievement whores exist.

If you made an achievement that required 1,000,000 bullets fired then you have a created a game where people will login just to unload full clips of bullets into the air.

And then it has some bad ones, Man vs Tank, anyone? That'l mess up a few games.

I don't mind getting achievements and I think some are really great challenges, make you look at the different aspects of the game world or increase replay value (slightly).

Only thing I have a problem with is the *blipbloop*, followed by a stupid announcement that won't go away for 5 seconds. It ruined my immersion in quite some games. e.g. in Dead Space, wehere I was hastily cutting off limbs off of aliens so they wouldn't maul me, only to be pulled right out of my fantasy world by the announcement that I killed 50 enemies with the Ripper.

Or in Mirror's Edge, where I was - and I'm serious - having a super high pulse while avoiding bullets and running to my next objective while all of a sudden I learned that I did a series of moves that earned me an achievement.

I like achievements. I don't play games just for achievements, but it's nice to have a little box pop up and say congrats on finishing a challenge or killing someone in a ridiculous way.

Interesting you should say that actually- There is an achieve in TF2 for the heavy that is known as something like "spending spree". You have to fire $1,000,000,000 worth of ammunition without spinning down your barrel. Now, by your reckoning, the heavies would stand in a corner emptying clips. In reality, defensive heavies (known as "PT's" or "portable turrets") lurking near to a dispenser can easily reach this in 1-2 waves of an attack.

While it's true that it's easy enough to ignore achievements; I find it enraging to find people who assume they're better gamers than others on xbox live merely because they sat at home, perfecting every game they own.

They add a kind of hierarchy to gaming and that is my reason for disliking them

needausername:
Fail.

Errm... you may want to change that before somebody reports you...

Sometimes they are just little things to do on the side for fun, ala squish every antlion grub in Episode 2, or extra challenges, Man vs Tank or cr0wned.

But, inevitably you play with that one achievement whore that will go out of the way for one, even if it will screw over the round for everybody.

I think some achievements have ruing gaming.

For example, in Fable 2, I'm sure the achievements encouraged some people to blast through it as quick as they could, to get the 3 different ending achievements, therefore not experiencing the game & immersion the way it was intended.

These same people probably post stuff like "OMG Fable 2 is crap it's so short, I've got 950/1000g 2 days after I got it".

Personally if I was making a game, I wouldn't have any achievements for completing it, exept maybe a hidden negative achievement if a game is comlpleted a short time after the 1st achievemnt is awarded.

The Twat.
"You rushed through the game I've spent a years developing. Well done, you Twat." - 0g"

Metal Gear Solid series makes people think it's short because there is a reward for doing a SPEED RUN of the game.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. I can't even enjoy the game anymore, those damn achievements keep haunting me. I've only unlocked 1 out of the 12 so far, and compared to my repertoire of near complete games, it's a sore sight to behold.

If you don't like them, then ignore them. Games are about the experiance and havung fun - not gaining points.

Left 4 Dead, and I'd argue Team Fortress 2 - or rather, it encourages you to try a different style of play.

Clearly the achievement isn't excessive and set within the limits of expected gameplay meaning that there would be no need for people to grind it out by firing ecessive rounds.

only thing that bothers me are achievements for monotony such as completing a chapter in Gears of War. although i really love achievements when it feels like an achievement or is original. TF2 achievements are best fun, original and funny.

Hey everyone I'm an athlete.

I've just realized that competitiveness, determination, and winning medals and trophies ruins my enjoyment of the sport and therefore I will never play it again.

Achiments have been added to Wow i spent all day completed 113 Quest so i could get the 1000 quest Achiment , Then i spent next day Going through the whole entire map, Then next farming 100g , and you can tell there quite Addicting.
