Good grammar goes a long way. But seriously, try even more fans. Put some 80cm fans blowing on the back. Other than that, if you can, stick it in front of an AC vent. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3768 Joined: 18 Dec 2007 | Have you got it standing up? Don't do that. It blocks the lower fan. Have plenty of room up the back for the hot air to escape. Let cool air flow past the xbox (it seems you do that anyway) and try not to play it too much during scorching hot weather. Thats about all you do really. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2599 Joined: 6 Jun 2008 | Yeah mine died last summer in March, I played it too much in the heat. Don't play it excessively while it's hot out. Also, try and install your games on the HDD to keep it cooler. |

Also don't leave it too near your big ass tv as the heat from it might make the console overheat. Oh and never leave the console standing, let it rest sideways. For your heating issue well, I don't really know, try putting it near an AC? User was banned for: FUN FORUM GAME THX FO PLAYIN :3. (Permanent) |

Hey, I spent alot of money on this damn thing, and I more highly consider the opinions of the people here then anything I could google. Get your answers from real gamers, not self help websites. |

That being said A few short term solutions include putting ice packs in a fluffy towel and putting it on or next to the system, or definalty under it where the power supply would be. One under and one above the supply would be best as it would 'trap' the cold air more in the supply itself but if not it would work best under. Above might be ok too but not as much so, Thermodynamics are your friend. Barring this though Try just having one fan pushed right against the back where the main fan is. That would at least help rush the hot air out faster and give it a bit more cooling. A high-end all metal floor fan would be best. |

Other than common sense (e.g. placing the console on a solid surface with plenty of space between the console and other electronics plus proper room air ventilation) is your best bet. I've heard praying helps, but then again, I'm not religious.
The rear fans are exhausts, designed to carry hot air out of the console. By placing a fan that blows air inside the console, you're trapping in the hot air. |

So I don't want to blow directly into the console from behind? What about from right or left, or front? |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 772 Joined: 25 Jun 2008 |
Oh duh, sorry tired and so a bit dislexic at the moment. No youd want it to be blowing AWAY from the console. When he said blowing on my tired brain was trying to think of wind-tunneling it. No you want to aim the fan to blow away from the case and put the exhaust fan behind it. It will suck more air out. |

If you want to blow air into the console, locate the intake and blow air in there. Having said that, you are best off just following the manufacturer's recommendations. A stand-up fan will help, but use it for general air circulation around the console, not directly at the console. Like any other piece of electronics where temperatures need to be cooled, it's not so much the number of fans you have blowing in or sucking out air - it's the overall airflow design that is important, and unlike a PC where you can tinker to your heart's content with fans and hardware placement, you're stuck with the 360's innards (lest you open the case which will void your warranty).
That is possible, but the difference should be negligible since the fan would only suck the hot air that was sucked out by the existing exhaust fans in the first place. In any case, I doubt you will be able to make any significant changes to your console without voiding your warranty, so in your case perhaps exercising common sense and following the instruction manual are your best bets. The fan won't hurt for circulating air around the room. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 772 Joined: 25 Jun 2008 | And people wonder why I keep saying it was poorly engineered. Really other than the ice packs Your right there is nothing major you can do, and even then its hard to tell how much that would help. Another ice pack under the air intake could help a bit too but what would have really helped was a stronger fan and more time spent designing the power supply so that it would have proper heat dissipation. they should have learned from the original X box that shotgun-blasting putty all over the thing won't be the same as proper spacing and placement |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1566 Joined: 8 Oct 2008 | Other than racks with holes in them try downloading all your games to the console, after I did that my 360 stopped overheating on fallout 3. Oh and if you can't weld an alternative is to put your 360 on top of a steam pot. |

The only problem is that its largely controversial (nothing illegal, just controversial) and has a slight extra price. So if you want it, PM me. Just do it for Mass Effect, because that game runs like shit on the 360, so you'll need all the help you can get. There should be less texture pop-in and slow-downs. |

Heat sink it. Put the little toaster on something metal if you can, so that absorbs and carries the heat away. Get the update and install any games you intend to play. If you intend to play another for a while, unistall one and install the one you intend to play. This will save a lot of heat generated from the disc drive. Write to Microsoft and tell them that this thing is a piece of crap and they need to do better next time. |

I dunno. I bought the original model, like the week it came out, and I never had issues with it. Still is working perfectly, still after extensive 8 hours sessions. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1086 Joined: 25 May 2008 | I don't get why most of your 360s die. Mine is going strong since I got it (2 years ago) and no problems bad enough to send it back. Given I did have Oblivion crashing on me once or twice and apart from a couple times when the thing just wouldn't read the game disc it's all good. I also have it standing up but it still never fried on me. I do give it plenty of space though, and it doesn't get hot in the summer where it's standing. |

What do you mean? If you mean get another Xbox and use that with your old hard drive then no, not without connecting to the net. DRM restrictions won't let you play your downloads on any console/hard drive combo except the original used to DL, unless you log into Xbox live. |

This was my initial thought actually. Unless you live some where stupid hot, you shouldn't have a problem if it isn't backed up into a tiny TV cabinet. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 429 Joined: 26 Sep 2008 | Have had no problems whatsoever with my xbox bought at release so far and its been upright the whole time. It sits upright on my desk in a gap of about 11cm each side from my ps2 and my TV and about an 8cm gap if that from my wall; it has been subjected to whole days (12 hours+?) of being left on (days off and friends coming round). One reason might be my desk has some sort of surface on top that looks like tiles but isn't (the word for it escapes me but begins with an "l") and this surface seems to stay cool and probably acts as a heat sink. |

Never had any problems, and when I play I usually put many consecutive hours on it without a problem. BTW, this is just from friends but, all my friends who got a 360 IRL (About 14) all got a intercooler. Except me, my sister got me the pelican stand. (Thanks Sis) Two years later, I'm the only one not to suffer from the RRoD out of the group. |

Okay, keeping in mind the 360's head issues, and me notiicng it's back does get hot, i'm looking for ways to keep it cool without buying one of those fans that voids my warranty. I've got 3 fans blowing on the thing at all times- one from the right, one from behind, and one from back and left. Any other suggestions (short of ducttaping an ice pack underneath the little folding card table it's on)?
