Long story short: After a lot of drama between Cave and Microsoft, DDP Black Label (which is already out) is going to remain a retail release and won't be available on Xbox Live Arcade. Stupid, I know. So if you want the Cave Black Label titles, you'll need to buy a Japanese 360. Seeing as how you're already playing SHMUP Forums Greatest Hits, there's not much else to recommend that you haven't already seen. I'd suggest Mars Matrix (Capcom, ARC/DC), Gunsmoke (ARC/Collections) and of course, Touhou Project.
I'd like to try the Touhou ones but can't really find them. I'm guessing they're PC only?
I don't see Ikaruga on that list. Remedy that immediately!
I liked it when I had it on gamecube but I stopped playing it and traded it in for some reason. Maybe I'll get it off Live, I think it's on there...
Every time I try these I go insane and start seizing on the floor from the sheer number of bullets. My strategy for most games like this is to plot out the trajectory for each projectile and find the gaps. But in order to do that, I actually draw mental lines that adjust every ime a factor changes (I do it in real life too, so I don't run into people), and when there's over a thousand bullets on the screen, making me plot out an ungodly amount of lines, I go nuts.
Play the House of the Dead 4. I think you'll like it.
And Radiant Silvergun, its Saturn predecessor. If you can afford to spend that much on a game that is. And you'd probably need a japanese Saturn as well. Never mind.
People have made a few quite playable Shoot'em Eups on LittleBigPlanet...no?
Actually Radiant Silvergun is coming out in HD on Xbox Live. So I'll actually get to check it out finally. I hope this trend continues and they keep bringing more games like that to Live.
Yes and you should. My boyfriend got it as part of his big retro collection. It's awesome but it wasn't cheap. At all.
Where did you hear this? Last time I looked the Saturn was still proving stupidly difficult to port meaning Radiant Silvergun was a no go...
I used to like these types of games but I gave them up for action games like God Hand, God of War, etc... You still get the same rush but you don't have to deal with unfair bullshit cheap deaths, since shmups still retain a lot of arcade characteristics (i.e. making you die a lot so you keep pumping in the coins)
Metal Slug Collection baby, I loves me my Metal Slug Collection. It's very cathartic gaming.
Ikaruga. Brilliant. Or also check out Heavy Weapon.
Super Stardust HD, Soldner X: Himmelssturner, Libidius, ...thats all I can really think of off the top of my head.
This whole Japanese-only for 360 crap is starting to bug me. Do Don Pachi Dai Oujou Black Label, Shikigami no Shiro III (I guess the Wii version was released here), Ketsui, and maybe even that shooter collection. What the hell, guys? At least tear off the region restriction and let us import.
Contra! =P | |
Metal Slug Anthology and Taito Legends 2 are great for shmup fans. I love me some Gekirindan. If it wasn't mentioned, Castle Shikigami 2 is great.
One great shoot-em-up is Einhander for the PSX. It's by Squaresoft (really) and it's a blast.
I've always been into these games, but lately I've been spending a lot more time with them. Mostly I've been strictly into the "bullet hell" variety. A lot of the Cave and Takumi releases are great i.e. DoDonPachi, Guwange, Progear, Giga Wing, etc. I've read that DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou is supposed to be released on Xbox Live but I can't figure out if that's Japan only or what. Obviously this genre isn't big in western countries so I'm missing out on a lot of the one's I'd like to play.
Anyone else a fan of these or have any recommendations on ones I should check out?
EDIT: Just to be clear I'm talking about shmups, aka horizontal/vertical shooters, not FPS games
