We all know that EA has improvede their standarts drasticly recently.

Pumping out worthwhile releases keeping me generally interested with a good combination of what i know and feel safe with while I get to see some new things along the way.

Then I stumblede upon this

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ea-licenses-dungeon-keeper-for-chinese-mmo

.....

I would like to point out that I am a MAJOR fan of dungeon keeper and have always been secretly hoping for a 3rd one to get released. I mean think about the possibilities if you added a simple physics eingine to the dungeon keeper idea, but this is what we are getting....

I dont know wether I should laugh or cry.

30 seconds with Need for Speed: Undercover will tell you that EA's unusually high quality this year was purely down to convergent luck. Normal service has resumed.

I don't see anything wrong with the game license moving to China.
I have chinese friends working in a video game company in Honk Kong.
Very talented and professional developers.

He means the fact they are turning it into an MMO game rather than making an RTS sequel á la Warcraft and WoW.

You obviously don't have the same definition of "recently" as EA. For EA, recent means the last game they released and raped. So, about 12 seconds.

Have you ever played dungeon Keeper mate?

I am trying to say this in the nicest way i possibly can.

The is a major gap culturally between the chinese and the Vestern gaming culture. You know for a fact you are gonna hate playing it.

And thats not even mentioning the gigantic gap between a British Humor RTS and a Chinises MMO.

This is what is called a deathblow mate. There is no way it will get up again from this.

Here is how its gonna go down. Netdragon will make their first 3d-MMO ever and release it for a chinise market where it will live a short while. Then maybe they will have enough succes to make an english version making it available for the Vestern market just to fail there because of the vast difference in gaming culture and the fact that its about 3 years behind the current tech that it is competing with. The Dungeon Keeper name will be remembered (if remembered) as a crappy Chinise MMO that the world would have been better without and the Dungeon Keeper series will now be beyond resurrection.

A very sad end to my favorite RTS game of all time.

Well yeah, but it's only a video game. It's not like we had lost the human DNA sequence.

Slightly off topic are you by chance German or Dutch speaking? I only ask because you seem to confuse your "W"'s and "v"'s which is normaly a very common spoken mistake made by the aforementioned languages when speaking English (as it its the hardest syllable in English for them to pronounce or so I hear).

Killing Bullfrog was. I loved Syndicate. I NEED a new Syndicate game. PLEASE. I will sleep with any game developers who try to ressurect it. And poor Westwood. :(

This one goes out to EA.

I don't get all the EA hate, they probally do have some bad games but its a huge company, like saying microsoft games suck. Off the top of my head the 2 EA game I have that I can think of are Warhammer which is now the pinncale of MMO's (screw you wow fanboys!) and EA fight night 3 which is one of the better boxing games out. Sure they pump out a new basketball, football, hockey, badminton, lawnbowling and boggle game every year but if some one honestly buys every sports game every year they'd have a right to be pissed but no right to bitch. Yes I haven't played mercanaries 2 but even if that game was bad I still have some faith that not all EA games suck.

How can they think that this is a good idea?

This makes me profoundly sad. Not only an MMO, not only Chinese (so it's unlikely the humour will carry across properly), but developed by a team that hasn't done a 3D MMO before.

It just has "death knell" written all over it.

*Cries in a corner*

EA can kiss the fattest part of my ass. People need to stop jumping on the fucking MMO bandwagon and just let WoW keep the title instead of fucking over franchises by dragging them kicking and screaming into the MMO genre.

The thing is EA is rarely the developer, but often the publisher. When they ARE the developer, they usually make terrible games. Also, EA fosters horrid business practices that are only recently being made better.

Warhammer may have been published by EA, but it was made by Mythic and was in production long before EA picked it up. Fight Night Round 3 was fun, I'll give you that. The hundreds of football games, not so much. At least, not to the point where they have to release new games just to update the roster. Especially now with patching.

EA also has a long history of going OM NOM NOM DEVELOPERS and subsequently destroying them. For something topic relevant, Bullfrog was purchased by EA and more or less drove off the team by trying to change how the team was run.

Oh, and EA is one of the major backers of really really intrusive DRM. I significantly doubt Maxis would have implemented Spore's DRM as they did if it wasn't for the big push from EA to do it.

If by "recent" we mean "2+ years ago":

In November 2004, Electronic Arts announced their intent to purchase all outstanding shares in Digital Illusions CE at a price of 61 SEK per share. The board of directors of Digital Illusions CE recommended that the company's shareholders accept the offer. Electronic Arts owned 62 percent of Digital Illusions CE on March 31, 2005.

On October 2, 2006 EA completed the acquisition for 67.50 SEK per share for 2.6 million shares, for a total of 175.5 million SEK. Digital Illusions CE was renamed EA Digital Illusions CE

Yeah but that means that DICE has been under EA control since...well the entire Mirror's Edge development cycle pretty much.

Problem is, you've no idea if they're being funded by said EA to keep on releasing projects. For all we know the merge might happened for free publishing, or legal matters. We really have no idea, EA is best known for this, they swoop in, buy a small time yet innovative company and force them to work like slaves. Eventually they release a genius of a product and then who steps forward and takes all the glory?
EA that's who.

We're talking about the company that decided to stamp their name all over the Left 4 Dead advert even though they had nothing to do with it, asides from distribution. For a person who's not inside the gaming scene they'd think EA made the game while real gamers are perfect aware that Valve is responsible for the masterpiece.

My point is, they're EVUL, and if you can fling poo at them like some rabid monkey, well you should because they deserve it.

Hmmm looking at a couple of sites its a proper partnership (like Mythic and EA for WAR), but looks like its for the east only. Also NetDragon do have some experience at MMOs.

It doesn't matter if the Chinese dev team is good or bad. The thing that's wrong is... well... everything. I mean, I remember firing up DK back in the day and having a blast. A blast like I've not has since almost. Dungeon Keeper does NOT deserve to be raped George Lucas style and made into a MMO. Honestly, I felt the second one was bad enough.
This is an atrocity and it should be stopped. Nerd rage, as mentioned above, does indeed seem to be taking control of me. Dungeon Keeper is a pinnacle of gaming. *sobs*

well let's see they have nothing to do with it besides letting it be sold in stores and probly pay for a large chunk of it's development too

i've really got no big issue with them, they're big and they release a lot of games, so therefore they will have a bunch of games that aren't always up to snuff. it's not to hard to figure that out if you do the math

Wait what? Did Valve needed any kind of permission from EA to sell Left 4 Dead on retail stores? I don't think so, they could have easily contract Ubisoft to sell it on retail or any other distributor.

And do you have any source to back up that statement about the development? EA has NOTHING to do with Valve, they had nothing to do with the game and it's creation asides from the distribution so why are you making assumptions? See? This is how EA works, you see they're shinny logo on a game cover and immediately think they somehow fund the company that created the game or worse, you think that they created it themselves.

image

Oh my god! It's far worse than I thought! The ESRB crowd are secretly funding the development on every game ever made!
