The trailer for "Black Mesa" just came out and it is awesome! For those who don't know what Black Mesa is, it's a remake of the original Half Life, but it's using the new version of the Source engine and since the devs made all the models from scratch, you can play it as long as you have a game that uses the source engine, any game that uses the source engine. Are you guys hyped for it or just meh cause I'M TOTALLY HYPED! This looks like a AAA game and we all know the story is gonna be fantastic since it's Half Life. It's got the modern production values, graphics, animations, voice acting, and presentation of a AAA title with the story of the original Half Life, is there a downside? If there is, I don't see it.

Btw, here's the link to the trailer: http://files.filefront.com/BlackMesaTrailer+HQ+720pwmv/;12515432;/fileinfo.html

Moderator note: This is a mod for the source engine.

It looks great, bit hard to tell from the trailer but it looks true to half-life.

I look foreward to this, sadly the original had slipped me by.

Upside? Old shooters suck (it's true, even if they were the best thing ever "back in the day").

I only played the begining of the original because mine was a cracked copy. Hope they port it to the 360 coz my pc is no where near powerful enough to run that

It looks better than ever. It's like Half-Life Citrus Bazooka.

I never played Half Life, so I hope this will take it's place.
P.S. What's a citrus bazooka?

I recently played Half-Life 1 again. I loved it, more than most of the shooters I've played recently too!

Watch your mouth boy! How dare you say that about Half Life!! *makes angry face* Half Life was and still is a masterpiece, although it would be interesting if they have the magic regenerating health like most modern shooters do. Although, if they do that, they need to let you be able to play it in the classic mode. Like before you start a game, you'd be able to choose if you want to play it in classic with health and armor pickups and regenerators or in modern with regenerating health and shields.

Is it just a remake of Half-Life or does it have the expansions?

I ask as I made my way through the game in less than 4 hours on my first play through.

Looks to be promising. I'll have to wait a little longer and see for sure though. I have always loved Half Life, such a good game(s).

That's an astute question, I also wonder that.

Additionally I wonder if a 360 port is likely.

The most amazing thing about this "MOD" is that it is literally done on the production level of a real full game. They have people who are professionals (and several amateurs) from all over the field. Concept Artist, Graphic Artist, Music Composers, Programmers, and Much more. All of this is done for free. (Its a mod so it will be free) No mater how well the Black Mesa Mod turns out, It will indefinitely be the deepest mod ever.

Unlikely unless Valve picks it up from the lead devs.

And is anyone more likely to do something like that than Valve?

Still, I suppose I better not get my hopes up.

Watch Zero Punctuation. Don't remember the review. It was something having to do with people buying awful games or basic remakes with just a new weapon or some such thing.

Could it be? The Foretold Half-Life Citrus Bazooka? The prophet spoke of the truth.

Just the original Half-Life; I've heard that the Black Mesa devs apparently don't consider the expansions (or the Blue Shift upgraded models and textures) to be "canon" for some stupid reason. Not that I'm complaining - it would be awesome if they remade the expansions, but then it would take even longer than it already has (this mod was started 4 years ago, and I will eat my hat if it comes out earlier than Episode 3).

I don't for a second believe that you played through the original Half-Life in less than 4 hours on your first play through, though - Half-Life is a very long game, especially by today's standards. Maybe you're thinking of Blue Shift?

That a pretty risky bet to make knowing Valve. The difference between Valve and Black Mesa is that Valve makes money from their product BL doesn't.

...Yeah, which is why Valve has more incentive to move quickly (not that I think we'll be seeing Episode 3 soon, either). Meanwhile Black Mesa is being done by amateurs on their spare time while they all get hired away from the project by game development companies.

this is going on my "must have" list for sure. I just bought and started playing half life since they were having a sale on steam, and it is amazing how awsome it will be to play it with graphics and voice acting like that.

Great. No, seriously, this is great news. I'm probably going to download it when it comes out.

Oh, and as for a Xbox 360 release, I wouldn't hold my breath. It's a mod, and it's most likely not going to come out on consoles (unless VALVE decides to publish it).

As awesome as this is...I wish they'd focus on getting Half Life 2: Episode 3 out the door in decent time

I saw this on 1fort, and I can't wait. As much as I have a disdain for praising the quality of the game by looking at the graphics, just look at them. The desert at the end looks absolutely incredible. Also, this is not just a "make old levels look better" remake, this is pretty much a whole new game. I'm looking forward to it.

You know what could be really cool? A non-canon redo of the original Half-Life, but where Freeman has to drive around the Black Mesa area like he does in 2 and the episodes. It would be, like, an alternate universe game.

Also, Half-Life has already been done in the Source engine. It's actually the version that I played first. Really, the original was just so damn good that every time developers get a new toy, it's totally freakin' worth it to see it used to make the original HL better...

Also, you can play it for free?

I believe I may have just had a nerdgasm...

EDIT:

I'm pretty sure it really is just a "make old levels look better" except with a few changes. See that bit where Freeman is coming up in that room with the oddly shaped staircase which looks suspiciously like a small fortress? Exactly the same as the original. Admittedly, it was really good level design, I thought, and deserves to remain unchanged...
