I downloaded the hi-res trailer. Looks like they have some pretty sweet graphics additions: Location-tracking texture drawing, dynamic shadows and large-scale 3D Skybox.

The expansions aren't considered canon because they're the work of a different developer and contain quite a few inconsistencies with the original game's storyline. Marc Laidlaw, the series' writer, confirmed that Valve don't consider the expansions canon.

Which I think might actually explain what the corridor that is shown in Ep2 (in Judith's transmission and by the Gman) actually is:

whyarecarrots, I think they are going to search for the corerola thing and destroy it, it's made by aperture science, not mesa. I hope GlaDOS makes an appearance in HL2e3. As for this game, I seriously can't wait.

Yes, I know that that will also come into it...
Hmm, maybe given the length of these episodes having Black Mesa as well as the Borealis might be a bit unreasonable..

Whilst it looks bloody awesome, the downside is that it'll take even longer for Half-Life 3 to come out. That, and my computer won't be able to play it. Otherwise, BRING ON BLACK MESA!

It will? Why? Valve's not responsible for this.

I can't really invalidate you, having never played Deus Ex. But I do assume you played it when it was still rather new. I also assume that a person like me who hasn't played it when it was new wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much as you did.

As a matter of fact, you just might. These days a lot of people get turned off by the terrible animations and the god-awful AI, but if you play long enough to get past that, you'll realize that the gameplay is far superior to the vast majority of video games that have come out since.

Is two-and-a-bit pages really too much for you to read? This has been clarified several times in this thread already.

Will be really nostalgic to play through it again, especially blowing up the jacket potato in the microwave.

All HL:Source did was include realistic physics and transparent water. BM:Source, on the other hand, is a complete graphical overhaul.

I've previously voiced my opinion on those responsible and (still) have absolutely no desire to play the mod. Dystopia destroyed itself within months thanks to the most arrogant and unhelpful development team ever to grace the internet and BM:Source has an even more dislikeable team. The whole thing has descended into a cynical, CV-whoring, ego-massaging vanity project (why redo the voices and music, ffs?) and has taken at least two years longer than it ever should have done. I wish the devs luck in their lucrative new careers but I can't say I'm excited about it any more.

I thought them having to redo the music and voice was due to copyright issues?

Casserole actually :p

And I played HL recently (thanks to Steam's $0.99 deal), and I did enjoy it. THe graphics were awful, and there was some very bad level design in places, and the lack of the immersive, character driven storyline I'd seen in HL2 made it seem slightly lacking, but despite all this I enjoyed it; it had some character to it, and was enjoyable to play.
If BMS can build on it by sorting out the graphical issues and making it more modern to play (which it would be impossible not to do), this should be brilliant.

On a side note, I wonder what they're going to do about voicing for the Gman; do their own and risk messing it up, or beg Valve for permission to use theirs? ;)

Bugger :P but it's been about 8 years since i last played it so try and cut me some slack :)

Downside? I've already played it.

Upside? Old shooters suck (it's true, even if they were the best thing ever "back in the day").

I recently played Half-Life 1 again. I loved it, more than most of the shooters I've played recently too!

Keyword: again.

Not sure how playing it again really matters. Several of my friends recently bought it during the 98 cents sale on Steam and all but one loved it and found it better than most other shooters. Yeah, that one hated it, because he couldn't figure out what to do.

:O

It's a mod made by fans. The only thing Valve did was make them change the name from Black Mesa Source to Black Mesa since they were worried it might have gotten confused with Half Life Source.

As awesome as this is...I wish they'd focus on getting Half Life 2: Episode 3 out the door in decent time

It isn't being made by Valve

Well that dosn't bode well...who's making it then?

Wait - Is this a "mod" so to speak or did VALVe create this? since it doesn't look as good as Half Life 2, graphic wise.

It's okay looking, but for some reason I'm not really that interested in it after seeing the trailer.

I'm about to view the trailer. I'll say this: If they've made half the corridoors full of gloomy shadows then I'll be dissapointed - Half Life looked great because the rooms were either full of light (and sterile like any advanced weapons facility), outside, black because of shorted lights or dark air vents.

After watching it: Ah, good, they didn't try make it fancy. On the other hand it looks a tad un-professional. Still looks great though :)

That a pretty risky bet to make knowing Valve. The difference between Valve and Black Mesa is that Valve makes money from their product BL doesn't.

...Yeah, which is why Valve has more incentive to move quickly (not that I think we'll be seeing Episode 3 soon, either). Meanwhile Black Mesa is being done by amateurs on their spare time while they all get hired away from the project by game development companies.

True, I was kinda putting both thoughts out there without really any good order or connection.

However, from a recent IGN pod cast on Left 4 Dead, they haven't even begun to work on Episode 3

is anyone else slightly underwhelmed by the Source engine? I guess they are going for realism, but it doesn't pull me into the visuals so much. But I played the original half-life so many times. It was a great game and even if the engine looks a little dated to me, i'm still getting it.

Looks very promising indeed.
Looks like they are putting in a decent amount of time to this project.

Yea, they've been working on it for 4 years. That's more than some AAA games.

Just the original Half-Life; I've heard that the Black Mesa devs apparently don't consider the expansions (or the Blue Shift upgraded models and textures) to be "canon" for some stupid reason.

The expansions aren't considered canon because they're the work of a different developer and contain quite a few inconsistencies with the original game's storyline. Marc Laidlaw, the series' writer, confirmed that Valve don't consider the expansions canon.

Yep, Gearbox made Blue-Shift and Opposing Force.

I would buy it just to fight Gargantuas and/or spawn them in Garry's Mod.

If you look at some of the mods already made for the Source engine (Insurgency, DIPRIP, Age of Chivalry), I think it's clear that the Source modding community is VERY good. I'm not worried about the quality of this being lower because it's an independent team of people.

Maybe they lied, it's a possibility. I seriosuly hope Valve just lied about it. They're probably working on it a lot and it's only a matter of time before they release a trailer... One can dream, right?

Well, I very much doubt that they've done NOTHING on the game at all. Even if they haven't begun coding and actually making the game I presume they will have been working on storyline and design for a while now, unless they don't want to release this game until mid 2010...

If it's mid 2010...this is a sad day for humanity, very sad indeed
