Seriously, I don't care if it 'sets a mood' or is 'atmospheric', unless we're actually given some sort of bonus for it raining (SNEAK +20%! NAPPY CHANGING IS NOW STEALTHY! FIRING SPITBALLS IS NOW STEALTHY! WET-WANKING IS NOW UNLOCKED! (AND STEALTHY!)) I couldn't care less, if a game designer wastes anything more than an afternoon of their time (Or a week of their coders time) on water effects, they should also make it so walking through rain makes you slower. And pruned. And a retard. Get an umbrella for fuck sake. |

Yeah, why all the hate on sleet guys? Ooh, I just remembered something important. Rain is only good in games if it doesn't make the same sound repeated over and over and over. |

The one level in Gears of War I always go back and replay is the Foundry level, because the driving rain and deep thunder make an already-foreboding area even more threatening (the glowin' Wretches help with that too). Storms in Oblivion blow trees back and forth and make visibility a nightmare (for you, of course, never the AI), and World of Warcraft has actually amped up their weather effects to allow for gusting squalls and snowstorms (although it's still silly that it can be raining on top of Thunder Bluff but Mulgore is sunny and dry). Rain lets you feel like you're in a living world instead of a static backdrop; it can either soothe and relax you with its gentle patter, or it can heighten tension as the darkness and overwhelming sound potentially hide an enemy's approach. Of course, it can be terribly done (Left4Dead is the first decent use of rain I've seen in the Source engine), but when done right, it draws me in like very few other things can. |

Well... I've given him ample time, but it appears he's not going to show up.
So I'll do it for him.
Rain in video games? Good!
