Don't be a dick. If by "hardware" you mean "hard drive" then I suppose you could upgrade... What do you mean by hardware upgrade? Because if you want to switch out the GPU I don't think Sony will help you with that. |

You weren't exactly helping. I've heard that it's region free, but someone who actually has a PS3 would be able to answer better than me. As for the hardware upgrading, the only thing I'm aware of is that you can use almost any PC internal hard drive to replace the one your console came with. Any upgrades besides increased storage would be pointless, since it's a console, and games are optimized to run on its current hardware. |

Little bit dude. Anyways, I would like to know about PS3s backwards compatibility. There were some rumors on the interewbz a while ago that said Sony kinda fucked it up. One of the main reasons I would get one is because I wanna play old stuff, so I just want to know if there is any truth to that. Anybody had any problems? Just to add another question. |

The backwards compatibility thing is unfortunately true. ONly older consoles can actually play the full assortment of past titles. Supposedly the way to check the console for backward-compatibility is to count the USB ports. If I remember what I read, compatible models will have four ports while newer incompatible consoles have only two. |

Own a 60gig PS3, never had a hint of a problem with any of my PS2 games nor my PSone games and I own quite a few of each. I am sure though that 'certain' PS3s are not backwards compatible but I am not sure which ones are which ones. |

Thanks guys I suppose I'll look for used ones then. |
BANNED Posts: 12958 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | My copy of Disgaea 3, not released in Australia til well into 2009 but given to me 3 months ago, tells me there is no region coding for games. For DVDs, yes, again personal experience (a DVD of Oceans 13 I bought in Spain won't work). For Blu-Rays, last I heard, only Disney actually make region locked discs. Older, original models have full backwards compatability with the entire Ps2 and Ps1 library, with upscaled graphics. Newer models have full Ps1 backwards compatability, but the Ps2 backwards compatability was removed to reduce the price. Sony are both working on a new way to reintroduce backwards compatability with the Ps2 library, and releasing more of its back catalogue over the PsN. It *used* to break down like this: - The 20 and 60 GB models would have hardware backwards compatibility. This gave them pretty much full backwards compatibility with everything. Nowadays, I believe that there is a new 80 GB model which does not feature even the backwards emulation. That's something to check out. For the record, my 80 GB model has the emulation and it has 4 USB ports on the front. - J |

The most recently released 80gig model that comes bundled with a dualshock 3 controller does not support backwards compatibility. This is the console I have and it's very disappointing, especially since the PS3 firmware has the facility to create/emulate a PS2 memory card, but won't read PS2 discs - evne via software compatibility. |

Unfortunately, 360s are region locked and it's pissed me off a whole fucking bunch since I spent good money on buying an American game to play on my Australia 360.
One would assume that to make the PS3 a competitive console, they'd enable all of them with BC. Only giving some consoles that option seems like a mistake by Sony, if I do say so myself. |
Muckraker Posts: 227 Joined: 27 Apr 2008 | I've heard you can install Linux on the PS3, if that's the case couldn't you run Linux and Bleem (or it's PS2 equivalent) and do it that? I do hope that helps but I really can't see why people say the main reason they want to spend £100's on a new console is to play their old games? |

Don't be a douche. He wants a PS3 not an xbox 360. anyway. the games are. the blu-ray movies are not. |

Urban legend says that they did it not just to save money (having the extra hardware was costing them pretty dearly) but deliberately to force PS3 owners to focus on the new PS3 library instead of picking up cheap PS2 games (or even continuing to play their existing library). I'm willing to accept that they did it for cost reasons alone (which saddens me because we didn't see a price cut along with the loss of BC) but the fact that they then failed to follow through by implementing software compatibility pretty much cements the idea that Sony really do want to make sure I'm buying Killzone 2, LBP, Uncharted etc instead of continuing to play Dragon Quest 8, Disgaea 2, God of War 2, etc. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2901 Joined: 3 Jan 2008 | I highly doubt they removed it to force consumers into buying PS3 products seeing as they still have PS2 content being released. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1286 Joined: 7 Nov 2007 | You think they want to keep selling PS2s if they can help it? We're already two years into the PS3's ten-year-plan and the PS2 is still outselling it. I like that they kept support for the PS2 going unlike MS dropping the XBox like a hot rock once the 360 came out, but believe me, they want to kill off that hardware and make everyone with a PS2 buy a PS3. That would be their wet dream for this console generation. |

Blu-ray does have region encoding, albeit much simpler than DVD region encoding. Whereas DVD has 10 specified region codes (counting "all regions" and "region 0-8" as well), Blu-ray only has region codes A, B and C. PS3 consoles are not region-encoded for PS3 games, but if the PS3 does detect a region encoding on a DVD or Blu-ray disc, it will enforce the region lock. When I first got my PS3 I wanted it more as a Blu-ray player / DVD scaler and one of its attractive features was it being "region free". Only later I found out that half my DVD collection wouldn't even play and I would have to manually decrypt the DVD and burn it on a dual-layer DVD before if I wanted to play it on the PS3. Since doing that for 300+ movies is way too much of a hassle, I have to keep my DVD player hooked up as well. |

I thought it was to make sure people were buying PS3 games since it justs emulates the PS2 with software. http://news.softpedia.com/news/80GB-PS3-Backward-Compatibility-Issues-Gone-65065.shtml You should find the answers to your questions above,Internet, or the PS3 Manual. |

It depends on which version you have. The 20GB and 60GB versions come with the actual Emotion Engine silicon inside the PS3 while the 80GB BC uses software emulation. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2381 Joined: 6 Mar 2008 | The upscaled BC graphics make a huge difference, especially on earlier PS2 titles which obviously weren't designed to run on today's larger, more advanced TVs. My ass was like "woah" when I played Rez through the PS3 for the first time. |

For some reason software emulation ceased with the models that went into production this year (which makes no fucking sense - isn't software emulation a matter of downloading some files? Why remove that option?). Since I bought the most recent model of 80gig PS3, I don't have that option. |

The conspiracy theory is to increase PS3 game sales. The official response is its "unnecessary". |

Or PS2 console sales. |

You're right - I should've stated that older 80GB models had the option. You basically have the same model I have - the 40GB version, but with a beefier hard drive. Sony upgrades the hard drives because the economies of scale eventually will have 80GB hard drives cheaper than 40GB ones. As an example, the cheapest 40GB 2.5' SATA HDD I can find on pricegrabber is USD35 but I can find 80GB HDDs for USD31. Since Sony is trying to make money off the console, they are shaving every cent they can. This means larger hard drives (which in fact are cheaper), and of course eliminating the PS2 hardware BC. What I don't understand is why would they nick software emulation (unless it's to get users to purchase PS3 games since they no longer can play PS2 titles on their new console)? The software is there, it's developed by Sony - it's not like they have to pay any sort of royalty to themselves, right? Finally, I think it's interesting to note there are no 40GB PS3s on offer in pricegrabber.com. I don't keep up with the PS3 hardware much anymore, since I already have one, but I assume it's being phased out, if it hasn't been already. |

If thats the case then they were "competitive" when they cost $800. They did not drop it on a whim, they dropped it to bring the price down. User was banned for: Poll: What is your opinion on the Metal Gear Solid storylines?. (Permanent) |

I'm sure these have been asked a couple of times before, but I want to find these out before i upgrade to a new system:
*Is the PS3 region-free or region-locked? For example, if I wanted a game that was only released in Europe could I import & play it if I wanted?
*I have heard that hardware upgrade is possible; where can I go to learn more about this?
Thanks in advance.
