Yep, I was going to say that. It's not that girls dislike gaming, they just have a tendency to favor a different kind of game than man. Niches derived from nature versus nurture and all that. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2350 Joined: 21 Aug 2008 | Have any female friends on Xbox live? I have a few they both mute most random people online because the bug them so much. I was playing with one of them on Uno, the children's card game, and she got hit on, and not like corny pick up lines, stuff like, "Baby lets meet up so i can f*** you, o my d*** is so big you'll love it!" I'm going to repeat it, This was on UNO! it was pathetic. So, if I was to take a guess it would have to be for reasons pertaining to people like that guy. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2811 Joined: 7 May 2008 | It's because of the origins of gaming. Most girl gamers have never played consoles like the Atari 2600, and it was those first few consoles that hooked most gamers for life. Not that I know any of this for sure, or anything, this is just something I heard. |
Paperboy Posts: 12 Joined: 27 Feb 2008 | I'm fairly sure that the answer to the questions "why don't guys like to shop (for clothes)?" would answer your question. That, and I'm pretty sure that they don't like the same game that guys do... ...just like why we don't like to go shopping for skirts, or dresses, or something that represents the other gender. |

Paperboy Posts: 31 Joined: 5 Dec 2008 | I believe it is because most games do not force you to identify yourself according to gender, and voice communication has only begun in earnest in the past year or so, so most of the time you could very well be playing against a girl and never no. They are certainly there. But they certainly never are single either... |
Paperboy Posts: 13 Joined: 11 Dec 2008 | Lots of times we choose not to speak in game, When we do we get told we are adolescent boys or hackers. Because really we can't be that good. haha |

I hate it when people do that to girls. Of course I also despise all of the other trash talking... suppose thats why I try to avoid voice chat altogether. |

THe worst part is that I have a voice that sounds like an adolescent boy. -.- |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1331 Joined: 22 Oct 2008 | I know a few girl-gamers, and they mainly just don't advertise it, because so often the first thing people say is either 'bullshit, you're a kid' or 'bullshit you're a lying faggot' or 'zomg, lets met ups and have teh sexzorz'. I can't blame them for getting tired of it. They're also more casual type of gamers, and not all that often interested in playing Call of Duty or Halo. More Rockband and Guitar Hero type of people. |

I found one! I found one! Woaaah.. its all pretty like.
I wish more females would talk in gaming because the constant bombardment of frat boys and little chaps can really get on my nerves. As much as I enjoy hearing some drunk Aussie yell about how Obama's name is Obama or some American swear at me, I would really enjoy to hear a females voice on an online game. What a nice change that would be. Maybe it could even happen on Xbox live? |

I have been gaming since the Atari and was always ridiculed...Nothing bothers me more than when I go into EB games and get asked "oh is this for your boyfriend"..... >.< I don't know if female gamers exist on Xbox live. |

Actually.. I agree with this. I was recently playing WAR and founded a guild with a bunch of newly acquired friends. One of my new buddies had a vent server, and we all jumped on. It was SO refreshing to hear a female voice among the din of male chatter. Its a fantastic change of pace, and depending on the age of the voice, can be a really good anchor for conversation. By which I mean a 18+ female can, just by presence, instill a sense of "lets show some respect" in mature guys.. keeps the swill down to a dull roar. Though it may have just been the fact most of us were mature before we grouped up... who knows. Dont get me started about the blather in TF2. |

Possibly in Half-Life 2: Death Match. We have some rather decent conversations in that game... for some odd reason. Personally I don't like to advertise that I play video games (in "real life" at least), and I'm not sure if it's for the same reasons, but seeing as how I have a relatively androgynous personality I think I can understand where a lot of girls are coming from. "Gamers" are a rude and obnoxious bunch. NOTE THAT I PUT THAT IN QUOTES. I don't mean people who play games, but I mean that group which is always labeled as "gamers" by the media. The group most in the public eye and ranting drunkenly on Xbox Live. That group. Not all gamers, but the one most obviously apparent. |

*high five for being awesome* I dont really know why, but it would be awesome if they were more common, gamer girls are always the coolest in a group. |
Muckraker Posts: 258 Joined: 28 May 2008 | If we're talking about online gaming..... heh..... I don't even think anyone needs to say why a lot of girls don't like online gaming, or at least why they don't let anyone know they're girls while playing online. Actually, that must suck. I myself don't really like talking while online because of rude dickheads, although I do like to talk while playing, so it kind of sucks. It must be even worse for girls. Glad I'm a guy, we have it easier. As for games in general, I don't know why it's not as popular with girls, and I've stopped wondering about it and just accepted it after having a conversation with a friend of mine who asked me "You'd spend 70 dollars on a video game? Guys are so silly." To which I replied "How is that different from when girls spend $100+ on a pair of shoes or article of clothing they're going to wear maybe three times in their lives? How is that worse than people who spend $100+ to go out to a club for a night that they won't even remember the next day, aside from the hangover?" I ranted on a little more, but the point is, she couldn't answer, because it's just a different sense of values to what's worth spending time and money on. Don't wonder why it is, just accept that it is in this case. But if it makes you feel any better, there are more girls playing games than you think. They just seem to play more casually, so they don't stand out. I have a friend who loves some classic games and you'd NEVER imagine it if you met her. I've even played on Live co-op with her a bit, but it's one of those "who knew" things. I'm one of the only people who knows that she likes playing video games, where as everybody who knows me knows I like playing video games. Like I said, girls are just more casual about it. That's just what I think. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 445 Joined: 18 Apr 2008 | I dont know why I had such a brain freeze here. I am just now remembering that my best friend is a girl.. and she plays video games =P In fact, shes the one that convinced me to get my PS3 (I was content with a PS2 and my beloved PC) and GTAIV. 'course she only talks online when I badger her to, thats also a side effect of the PS3 voice chat being a side of garbage and chips. Oh well.. I need to pass out now before I start forgetting to breathe. |
Muckraker Posts: 321 Joined: 31 Oct 2008 | We do. But seeing as how we run the risk of being made fun of or harassed most women who play games don't mention the woman part. And we don't all play Animal Crossing or the fucking Sims (not about casual but about boring and cutesy) And part of it has to do with the perception video games being something that only boys do, so many girls don't play when they're kids. I think it's also a perception thing that all games and people who play them are like the stereotyped XBL community (I have no idea if it's really like that by the way). Mostly it comes down to not wanting to be "the girl" in the room as opposed to another player. Admittedly things have gotten much better even in the last few years. When WOW first came out you REALLY didn't want to say you're a girl. Now 9 times out of 10 no one cares. The one guy who does care is probably a dick IRL anyway. |
On the Record Posts: 5023 Joined: 28 Feb 2008 | Also, how people think that, for example, because I am bad at PvP, all girls are bad at games, and thus should be viewed as inferior. That's a big reason I never got in to multiplayer. |
King of the Yetis Posts: 2539 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | I generally avoid girls when it comes to online gaming. No not because I love the dick. But because every online gaming community, even the most diverse and eloquent that only play turn based renactments of the Franco-Prussian war, acts in a very similar manner to a bunch of 8 year old boys. That's not a bad thing, sometimes a guy just wants to cut loose, shoot some aliens and answer every question with "Chuck Norris" or "Cuntflaps", but like a group of eight year old boys, when you throw a girl into the mix (more specifically, two bumps and a hole) the whole thing comes crashing down and it all starts to resemble Lord of the Flies. Grown men, men who work, will follow the girl around, making sure she gets all the healing and best items. They'll vie for her attention in retarded ways. All of a sudden everyone is on a first name basis. No one wants to hear your penis jokes any more. Girls are like HIV to online communities, they don't do anything inherently wrong, but they make the communities immunme system turn on itself until there's nothing left to do but curl up in a corner and die. Girls, to use the parlance of a bygone age, are icky. That being said more games are being made with women in mind. Behold.

Muckraker Posts: 324 Joined: 24 Mar 2008 | Yeah probally becuase theres an unwriten code that says violence is for guys and not for girls (not saying that that's solid in real life of course.)but like the posts above they either play or games (not every game is online only or they don't have internet access) so your paths wouldn't really cross often if at all. Then theres the other aspect of getting hit on to various degrees for just being of the female gender |

I'll vouch for that not being true. I don't know where you ladies learned about that nerve in the arm but you can really kick our asses sometimes. |

Only one problem I'm not a lady... or a rude woman. though i get that from time to time. Seriously I'm a guy though others have made the same assumption in FFXI on my "Male" character too. mostly while i'm on the way to join the fighting area but in the party or when I wore robes that concealed the characters face they still assumed that a mostly quiet whm elvaan named Lucane (not saying the name gives anything away I guess.) was more likly female. |
Muckraker Posts: 296 Joined: 24 Aug 2008 | Girls are gamers, but from what I have seen, not online gamers. One of my friends told me the second she gets on a vent server, or xbox live, all she gets are sexist comments, or some douchebag talking about his huge custard chucking man banana, and how she wants it. |

Paperboy Posts: 13 Joined: 11 Dec 2008 | Usually I play under a "guy" tag or a Unisex tag. I only ever scrim with my Female tag on, and thats because when you are getting rolled by me I want you to know that just because I am a girl does not mean I cannot shoot just as well, if not better. It is also true that when you throw a female into the mix it screws everything up guys feel the need to act all macho and take it as personal insult when they get creamed by the opposite sex. You cannot just be a player if you happen to be female and show it. Also, the dating thing goes both ways, I do not date males who are not gamers.. I also don't date males who are terrible gamers haha |

Generally speaking, that is. I realize that there are some girls on here; but it seems that y'all are the exception to the rule. I'm just curious: Why is the female-to-male ratio amongst gamers so low?
