Most girls I know 'dislike' video games because 'they are for blokes', even though a lot of girls I know play video games, mostly 'girl games' and Guitar Hero but still they play games but aren't as into because it's 'unusual' for girls to play games. |

It's probally because it's been viewed as a guy thing for so many years. It also doesn't help that most games are aimed towards men. What makes matters worse, games that are aimed towards girls and women are all the same glittery crap. But I say, 'women, stand up and be proud of being gamers. Throw in your copies of CoD4 and slay all those boys who say we're no good! Huzzaaaa!!!!!' |

But whence cometh this obvious preference for targeting a male demographic? I'd say that it's a left-over from back when use of computers (as well as the programming and distribution of computer games) was the domain of the tech geek, and quite removed from mainstream society. And as you may know, geeks tend to be men in the vast majority. The programming skills needed to get some decent mileage out of a personal computer back then were very high. And as you may know: exact mathematics and sciences attract way, WAY more men than women. So I think that stigma is still present: computers are complex and intimidating and only reserved for geeks that have no life. This doesn't make sense (as stigmas rarely do) since current generation consoles and even PCs are nothing if not user friendly, but you overestimate the rationality of people if you think this is not a big bias people probably still have. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 409 Joined: 2 Aug 2008 | All of the girls spouting this 'we just need a strong female character' are just shoveling crap. We don't need or want a strong female character, and even if gaming had strong female characters out the wazoo nothing would change. Books with strong female characters are hit and miss when it comes to popularity. Movies with strong female characters don't drag out the female masses. You suddenly expect hordes of females to come out once a woman of average breast size shows up? Are you that gullible? Stop lying to everyone, please. No, females aren't attracted to video games for the same reason people weren't attracted to computers twenty years ago.
Isn't telling someone you've reported them a reportable offense? That's akin to taunting. "Haw haw! I'm gunna get you banned and you can't do N0THIN'!" Very childish, Mr. Back Seat Mod. |
