Anonymous Source Posts: 5 Joined: 11 Dec 2008 | To Decoy Doctorpus: Regarding what you were saying about guys letting the girls take the pickups is completely true, Im playing gears 2 right now, in a horde match, and the rest of my team is across the map following the girl in the match, letting her take the ammo and kills. It makes me wonder wtf do they think there gonna get out of this? To people saying girls are more into casual games: I know more girls who play games like Halo and Gears 2 then any casual game. Ive had female friends I know through fits over games of rock band because they didnt want to play (in one case, one girl through my friends guitar controller, smashing it). To the girl gamers reading this: If you want to be treated like everyone else online, you have to speak up. I play frequently with a few girls on XBL and whenever some guy starts talking about how large he is, it has always come down to 2 things. 1) the girl will turn off her headset, the guy will continue acting like a retard, the girl will feel bad after the match, and the guy wont learn a damn thing. 2) the girl will tell the guy he is being an idiot, and the guy will STFU. I had a friend who was being sexist, the girl basically told him he was being a jackass and he stopped saying crap. Ever since whenever I play with him he is nice, it feels like a miracle because he was a huge asshole before that. In conclusion, this, like all problems, has to be faced head on. Muting the person wont teach them a lesson, it will just make them stop for a second. Of course there are some people who are just a huge POS and wont ever stop. |

Girls are just as bad as guys these days Selv. Most girl gamers i see are in MMO games (I mean girls that i know for fact are girls because i've talked to them) and some of them don't harrasse perse but they take advantage over most of the weaker men. I understand if you're stupid enough to bend over backwards for a girl that you don't even know you probly deserve it but I've met girl gamers that demand special treatment because of their mammaries. No insults toward the opposite sex i am just saying some girls are just as bad as most of the guys in their own way. |

Although it's true that about 45 percent of gamers are female, that number includes Japan, Korea, etc. and cultures where gaming is much more mainstream; in the West, I get the impression that "gaming" includes casual Internet/cell phone/etc. games, which most of us would scoff at. Surely we don't consider playing Scrabble on the same level as playing Sonic. I've also found that a lot of female gamers have a distinct taste for older, retro games but shun anything newer. Many of them grew up with an NES or SNES, but never made the transition to later stuff. Most guys, meanwhile, are into the latest games because of the gun and gore porn. People I didn't even know played games have been talking to me about Fallout 3, but the vast majority of them just like it because it has pretty graphics, a neat setting and lets you blow heads into little red chunks. They don't appreciate anything beyond the surface elements; it's those aesthetics that appeal to them, not the underlying systems, immersion, atmosphere, etc. Furthermore, although most fans of hardcore games seem to be male, very few of them play it on what I'd consider a hardcore level. I told someone I was on my third Fallout 3 play-through at about 160 hours, he looked at me like I was a freak, or a nutcase. It hadn't even occurred to him that there was that much gameplay in there. For him, spending the ten or fifteen hours to get to the end of the storyline was an ordeal; that there was anything else to the game seemed incomprehensible. Meanwhile, the female gamer who is an absolute pro at Bejeweled or Peggle seems to have a much greater appreciation for the game. My point is that people seem surprised when females admit they play games, but most these days do play games - just different ones. Similarly, males play those big triple-A games, but they play them casually, the same way that female gamers play their more casually-focused Internet-based stuff. As to why there is that divide, though, I'd place the blame on upbringing. Most females are socialised in a very particular way that tends to shun direct violence and conflict, and trained to be passive rather than active. This may sound somewhat dated, and it's absolutely true that things are changing, but these trends are still very much alive. |

That is seriously disgusting. It's a good thing the jerk didn't have a vision camera, eh? I hope you (Or she) reported his ass tons of times (You can do it more then once).
I know a few girl gamers like this (Who game on a unisex Gamertag) because of idiots. It's a shame too, because most of the girls I have met on XBL have been good! And it always makes me smile when the girls cream the loud-mouth of the room. Most of the time they quit immediately, or even in game. It's awesome. |

There was a poll ages ago that said most woman play either Night Elf Priests or Night Elf Druids. Ok scratch that. From my WoW and Runescape experience i have found that there are a lot of female gamers, heck one of my great mates Jen is an ex-WoW player :) |

I played WoW but i live by a set of rules, No girls on the internet. Unless Proven. Until i hear your girl voice and you prove the fact that you in fact are or were a female at some point and time. You're a man. Goes great with my girls don't get special treatment in games rule. |

It's true, I haven't found even one girl gamer at my college because all they care about is the above. It's driving me insane...

That's one reason why I love TeamSpeak -- I can mute anyone who I don't want to listen to, unlike real life. At least the women I speak to on TS and in guild chat have something on their minds other than "zomg latest celebrity book", "zomg latest reality TV show", "zomg personal issues" and "zomg work issues". Val especially is about as much a fan of WoW lore as I am, which makes for some interesting and engaging conversations. |

The majority of games don't strike the fancy of the majority of women out there at a level beyond the superficial. Probably because: 1) You're mostly all neckbearded mouthbreathers User was banned for: Microsoft and the World Domination of Gaming&Communication. (Permanent) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1173 Joined: 21 Oct 2008 | In the outside world I've known lots of normal girls who play games. Online I've known and played with lots of girls, especially TF2, huge amounts of girls play that. I've also only seen a few cases of guys being sexist online but everyone just calls them out on it and then they sulk off. So I guess I must be really lucky when it comes down to finding girl gamers.
I'm starting to get the impression you go to a college in a really crappy area. |

If you really think something like Gears of War can offer the same sort of social and emotional nuance as real life interaction, I think you need to get out more. I'm sure it offers a really superficial and shallow emotional valence, but that's *exactly* what many of my friends have specifically stated they don't like about the majority of big budget video games out there. Be fair, everyone likes shiny things. Also dating a female gamer? not as good as you think it is... I am going to use this personal experiance as an example. I as a male gamer and just like most other gamers can be a bit selfish sometimes. Sometimes i when i'm playing a game i like to be left alone. (I'm going to use a Online RPG as a example because more girls play that then FPS) Me and my girly were playing a unnamed online rpg together that a few my RL buds played and she wanted to join us. So she is on the phone with my and i am walking her through the tutorial and she is asking me question... question that IMO were kinda stupid because i was a more experianced gamer and already knew these things but she is my girl and i didn't say anything about it. She gets out into the real game and i lend her some money and make a new character to level with her. Then the annoyance begins.. word of advice (not to offend) if you play a game with your girlfriend prepare to have patience because these statements/questions will arise. "Hey log onto your other guy and come level with me" I love her to death but i had this same experiance when my dad started playing WoW with me... exept i can't kiss my dad and make up. Ewww... |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1254 Joined: 19 Mar 2008 | Girls have gotten themselves into a vicious cycle. It is very rare for us guys to meet female gamers online and so we often act differently because we are so keen to experience this rare phenomenon. This however puts girls off revealing themselves so there are less recognised girl gamers and therefore guys act even more retardely when they do finally come across a woman. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 106 Joined: 30 Jun 2008 | I did a study on this in graduate school. While it is true that many spatial orientation studies have shown a male performance bias in rats and other species the results for humans are more mixed. That being said the ESA estimates that women are closing the gap on men when you account for more casual games like solitaire on the PC as well as flash based games. My wife loves Kingdom Hearts and is naturally better than me at most games. However, she is very disinterested in most RPGs, action titles or even sim games. She likes Mario, Kingdom Hearts, Mario Kart, maybe Pikmin and Mario Party. So marketing, culture and maybe a little biology all play a part in explaining the perceived sex differences in time spent gaming. |

Muckraker Posts: 274 Joined: 5 Oct 2007 | I think that there are plenty of girls into gaming, but they prefer their anonymity. Guys tend to make a girl's gaming relational to their being female; i.e., being female is the important thing about their gaming, and everything they do while gaming is related (somehow) to them being female. Believe it or not, our breasts and ovaries have very little to do with why we game or our choice of games. We game because we enjoy it. Never once while considering a game have I considered my gender, but guys usually express surprise when they discover I was given God of War for Mother's Day one year. I guess because it's not "girly?" Would anyone have batted an eye had I been given a Final Fantasy game or The Sims? Probably not. Despite those being "likely choices for a girl," no one raises the equivalent eyebrow if a guy chooses to play them. Any derision a guy might get for playing FF would not be because it's "girly" but because "JRPGs suck." He's treated like a gamer with bad taste, not a "boy gamer." *sigh* I will always be a "girl gamer" never just a gamer. |

Lies. My favourite games are FPS by far. Personally I can't stand people who just assume because I'm female I'm only going to like Animal Crossing on the DS or I won't be able to kick ass on Instagib... or even know what Instagib is! Admittedly you don't get many girls who are really into the shooters and more violent games when compared to guys, but that doesn't mean we don't exist! On, and in response to what someone said about girls only caring about shopping, Facebook and celebrities... I hate all of the above so you shouldn't generalise there either. And finally the headshot comment... there's nothing like a good headshot with an instagib rifle :D |

i never actually (and knowingly) played with\vs a female gamer. and when it will happen i doubt i will really care about her shooting my ass of (happens all the time anyway...).
if their are any girls playing halo 2, then i havnt seen them yet.
bottom line:
girls: reveal yourself
guys: find your brain if you lost it in your ass
