Wow I never knew that this was such a problem for other people. I just treat based on my system, if you are doing something stupid like running into a corner repeatedly, then you get no respect. If you get a head shot from across the level, or do something else equaling amazing, then you get respect.

I recommend God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert. His insight into the fundamental principles of the male and female psyches is incredible.

They are but for the most part...

GIRLS DON'T LIKE SHOOTERS OR COMPETATIVE GAMES!

Girl Gamers like RPG's, Sims and Platformers.

They also like Legend of Zelda... A lot.

Lies. My favourite games are FPS by far. Personally I can't stand people who just assume because I'm female I'm only going to like Animal Crossing on the DS or I won't be able to kick ass on Instagib... or even know what Instagib is! Admittedly you don't get many girls who are really into the shooters and more violent games when compared to guys, but that doesn't mean we don't exist!

On, and in response to what someone said about girls only caring about shopping, Facebook and celebrities... I hate all of the above so you shouldn't generalise there either.

And finally the headshot comment... there's nothing like a good headshot with an instagib rifle :D

I would say you're the exception rather than the rule, at least among people I've met.

Yeah, neckbeard sci fi books always offer the most incredible insights into the fundamental principles of the male and female psyches.

Also, check out Halo: Fall of Reach. You will gather some fantastic knowledge into the most foundational social differences between males, female AI's, and the Covenant.

Girl's don't like gaming because their brains are 1/3 the size of men's. It's science.

Oh hang on, maybe they're not into gaming because of silly little man-children like you.

Don't worry, I think he got it the wrong way round ;D.

Anyways, lots of girls play games. It's just a lot of them don't talk about it as much. Thats what I've found in my experience anyway.

Mind you, I had a conversation once with one of my friends and she asked me what I had done for the Christmas holidays, to which I replied "Not much. Just watching DVDs and playing video games really."
She then said "Cool! Which console did you have? I was playing San Andreas all holiday! That was dead fun!"

Everybody's different I suppose.

I'm not sure there really is a rule. Of course there are more men than women who play games but different guys can be into all sorts of things... everything from FIFA to WoW to GTA. Girl gamers vary too yet unfortunately we keep getting the assumption that the majority will just want to play things like the Sims.

You seem to have some vendetta against me and my opinions. I can assume that you've never read God Emperor of Dune or at best have practically no memory of it. Therefore your statement is moot and should be ignored.

You take obvious joke posts way too seriously. Reading all that fan fiction and trying to reconcile it with canon is a recipe for internal turmoil and anxiety!

Oh, sure, I cried and weeped after I accidently ran my sports car over pedestrians, hitting up to 20 people. I felt so horrible. All those poor little things!

And then not a minute later, my weapon went off.. right next to someone's head! I can't believe it! I'm such a silly girl.

Yes, mindless violence is lame!

I wish I could play as a girl in a GTA game for once, though. Bleh.

Otherwise, I can't fathom how a socially normative person could offer as their very first recommendation in literature for understanding the differences between men and women a work of science fiction by Frank Herbert.

I've read Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune back when I was 11 and 12, but I stopped after that because I realized there were far more intellectually stimulating books to read. My apologies for being too smart and not continuing onto the fourth book.

This has never really bothered me. I always assume that anyone on the internet is a guy, unless proven otherwise. I mean seriously, its rule 30 of the internet.

I always laugh when guys try to get all flirty with girls in games, because they become easier targets. Focus on the game guys, go to clubs if you want to pick up women.

it means instant kill with one hit. instant giblets. it was a popular mode in unreal tournament where you would use some energy weapon (the name of it escapes me, shock rifle or something) and if you hit them, the person would explode.

(Don't people know how to google anymore? Or check wikipedia?

.. Instagib is a gamemode (originated in Q2, made 'famous' by Unreal Tournament) where everyone has a rifle that makes your opponent blow up in one hit. 's basically it.

I think it's because a lot of girls have other things on their mind that they find way more important and\or interesting than video games. It's just not the greatest appeal to the majority of them.

I have no beard of any sort, although I don't exactly know what you mean by "neckbeard."

The reason I recommend God Emperor of Dune as opposed to some random and bland pyschology research is that God Emperor of Dune is actually an interesting book that people might want to read for pleasure instead of some emotionless desire to know whatever information might actually be in it. The information is also simple and understandable rather than comprehensive, it offers a basis for understanding the fundamental differences between a male mind and a female mind and shows these differences in application.

It's a shame that you didn't read on, God Emperor of Dune is really the best in the series (in my opinion anyway). Although I suppose an all-round elitist such as yourself cannot be seen associating with anything enjoyed by the common folk.

I've been playing games since I got hooked on Alex Kidd on the sega way back when and playing things like manic miner and jet set willy :P
I've played Eve-online and WoW for about 4 years now and also dabbled in some other things although I can never get the hang of FPS Im just too damn slow. Unreal was my fav game for ever such a long time and I love a good God Sim, preferably with the option of killing ppl who annoy you...
So yeah Gamerz Fo L1fe

You do, it's just one that is far more internal than external.

You'll get a lot more out of reading well written anthropology, sociology, and psychology books of non fiction and then going out and meeting people and seeing how what you have read relates to what you experience. I guess it's the going out and meeting people part which I'm emphasizing here though.

I enjoy playing video games and love watching action and comedy movies. Are those no longer in the domain of what entertains common folk?

Call me sexist if you want but the majority of the girls I've met have never really had a hobby so to speak (I don't call texting or shopping a hobby) but they do tend to like to chat and socialize... whereas most of the guys I've met, sociable as they may be, have always had something that takes their interest... gaming, sport, cars are a few common examples.

To me this only helps to enforce the idea that men and women think differently. Any girl I've met that does game or play sport always seems to be more male-minded and hangs out with guys more. Whereas any guy I've met who does stereotypically girly things like gossip and shop has always been at least metrosexual and in turn hangs out with girls a lot.

I'm not at all up on genetics but I'm guessing it's an imbalance in the male and female hormones that makes a person gay/lesbian or more male/female minded.

I might, but an average person would be in over their head.

You're a wholly lost cause in the crusade for sensibilty.

To the thread as a whole. I recommend God Emperor of Dune for some insight into the fundamental difference between male and female character, it has certainly aided me in understanding why there are fewer female gamers than male gamers. This elitist Eggo who looks down upon you and has never read the book thinks you would be wasting your time for some reason.

Girls not having a hobby so to speak in this particular culture is easily attributed to women still being treated as objects and not as subjects.

I was playing Halo 3, and two of the people on my team were boyfriend and girlfriend. The guy was a decent player, but relatively inexperienced, and the girl kicked arse. A new guy joined the team, and after a few rounds the harassment from him started.

"Hey babe, this guy sucks, leave him and come fuck a true gamer"
"Why are you with this guy honey?"
"Hey, come feel my energy sword" (Yes, he really said that)

Both the boyfriend and girlfriend put in complaints against him.

I, on the other hand, have read it and would advise you to stay away. Go no further than Dune Messiah, Children of Dune at the most, after that they started to get really weird. :P

How you doin'?

I don't think I feel comfortable anymore.

I'm alright, thanks. How are you?
I digress.

I think we men should shut up, for the most part, and stop pegging girls into categories. Not ALL girls are casual gamers. Not ALL girls hate playing games. Not ALL girls desire to be anonymous. There are always exceptions to the "rules." I see a pretty "even" 40/60 (female/male) split at work with focus test respondents. We focus test video games, if you were wondering. So the lady gamers are certainly out there.. They just deserve better treatment. Guys ("boys") need to stop treating the appearance of a female gamers as lightning, and just treat them the same.

Well I guess I cant say that either.. because being treated "the same" means they get bashed along with the rest of the "n00bzors." So I guess I'm suggesting an entirely new gaming culture... one thats totally counter-intuitive to the pre-pubescent male mind. Great.

This, I agree with. There are girl gamers with the same amount, if not more, skill than guys, so why be easier on them? It's like reverse sexism. If I'm in an FFA, I'm going to shoot anything that moves, whether it's a 12 year old kid, a teenage girl, or a 90 year old guy.

Fair enough, O Mighty One of the Golden Screen-name. (although I like the weird stuff)

The reason that girl gamers seem fewer is that men are by nature curious and adventurous. When new things come along it's always men who are making it and men who are using it. Thus it takes time for women to get into these things, partly because of a more sedentary intellect and partly because new fields are intitially male-dominated.

What a crock. You're overthinking the whole thing. You only consider females who game differently because you've found something in them with which to identify. Suddenly, they're people, not Girls, that alien race about which the running joke in our culture is "you'll never figure them out." You've got a common denominator with an individual, something that has bonded people together for centuries. A girl who games isn't fundamentally any different from another girl who texts, plays softball or builds robots for competition any more than a [i]boy[/] who games is fundamentally different from another boy who texts, plays softball or builds robots for competition. We're people, same as you, with a host of interests, preferences and attitudes. You've decided they're more "male" because you believe that "video games are a guy thing." In reality, they're just people with whom you have something in common. Gender is an issue in this instance only if you believe it is.

(I have read God Emperor of Dune. I have no fond memories of it and think it's a necessary evil to read the book so one can move on to Heretics and Chapterhouse. Such a shame Frank died just when he'd made the series interesting again.)

I played on a free-shard-roleplaying-server with a very mature Userbase (wasn't easy to get in if you were not prepaired to folow the rules and play your character seriously) and our gender ratio was 3/2 so not many Teamspeak Sessions without a female Voice in it.

I can uderstand that girls chose places where there isn't a crowt of premature boys that see their only chance of scoring with a chick is to pick her up in a game. Even if the boys are nice they will still treat the girl differendly so she wouldn't be part of the community but the unknown alien. So if there already is a basis of female players it gets a lot easier for newcomers to join in.
