Even in an economic collapse, Hentai still worth $15 million.

http://www.alafista.com/2008/05/17/figure-auctioned-for-15-million-usd/ (Most definitely NSFW)

You say art, I say unreasonably proportioned anime figures ejaculting and lactacing quite frightening shapes.

This is wrong on so very, very many levels. Like - how is this art? Why would Sotherbeys stock this? How on earth did it reach $15.6 Million? One of the worst is that these things stand about 2 1/2 meters tall - up to the average human head height. So, the perverted bastard who payed for them is going to have his guests face to face with "lassos" and "Ropes"

The mind does reel at it, and the stomach does churn.

I actually saw the artist covered in some popular magazine, years ago. Apparently, he's a massively famous artist in some (apparently wealthy) circles.

Apparently, the point of the piece is actually to mock the otakus/hentai-lovers, and not really to be Hentai itself. At least according to my interpretation of this excerpt from the artist's Wikipedia entry.

Murakami's style, called Superflat, is characterized by flat planes of color and graphic images involving a character style derived from anime and manga. Superflat is an artistic style that comments on otaku lifestyle and subculture, as well as consumerism and sexual fetishism.

So, the statement of those pieces is not, "Hey, this gets me off, how about you?" It's more like, "Can you believe there's actually a subculture that gets off to Anime parody and funds an industry based on it? That's so freaking ridiculous, I'm going to make a life-sized one, twirling a lasso of his own sperm, just to clarify how ridiculous it is."

With that kind of money, I'm sure you could find some strumpet willing to undergo the plastic surgery required to live your fantasy... as well as affording the plastic surgery itself

A question, my dear Indigo, wherefore did you stumble upon this site and it's rendered plastic bounty?

A fair question.

The artist always includes linkages to the weirdest the net has to offer - I followed, thinking it was just a pile of garbage selling for $15 million - what I saw was even more depressing.

Okay I don't even have a problem with Hentai or Porn (Being a Major (Admitted) Pervert) and I still think that's anything BUT erotic, mentally scaring YES.

But that doesn't make it any less freaky, creepy or ridiculous.

You know what I'd want to see? Picasso's version of hentai. Just for kicks.

Man Takashi Murakami rules, I love that dude's work. From memory that piece is called 'My Lonesome Cowboy'.

As someone else mentioned his work parodies the shallow emasculated contemporary otaku culture. But it doesn't just mock them, at some level his work often contains empathy for his subjects which I think is interesting. Not many artists (or people for that matter) can simultaneously ridicule, abhor and empathise with something.

As for why it sold so high? Simple, he's one of the most important contemporary artists in the world right now.

True but that's still kinda the point.

Is it just me, or does the spiky-haired statue vaguely resemble Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7?

And yes, this is depressing.

Someone needs to explain me the appeal of Hentai.

I see the popularity is growing outside of Japan, and in the early hours, nowadays there are as much TV Ads for downloadable Hentai Videos as there are for Hotlines with "real" (*snicker*) Women.

But i don't fucking understand it. I can see why some people like porn, and why some people have weird fetishes, but i cannot understand how it can make someone horny when he's imagining to fuck ink on paper...

Bottom line, just as different people enjoy playing different kinds of games, different people will have different turn-ons sexually as well.

I think the appeal behind your average anime chick is because they're drawn with thoroughly unrealistic curves - proportions way out of whack with reality but in sync with the libido. The unblemished (to the point of shining) skin and mature-yet-young appearance similarly break reality while poking the libido. (Women already had it hard enough competing with supermodels, tough luck if they find themselves up against a skilled artist's imagination!)

The imagination of the abuser of this medium must be adequate to overlook not only that said objects of affection cannot manifest physically, but also to overlook those freaking giant saucers they call eyes. (Personally, I'm somewhere in the middle - a hot anime chick can be conceptualized as racy for me, but looking one in the face is a turnoff.)

As for those who are into really screwed up stuff (massive tentacle invasion, severed bodies) my guess is that they're probably trying too hard. If normal sex is that boring for you, your libido's probably running on empty - take a break! But, again, different turn-ons for different folks, it's hard to say where my judgment is justified. Authorities would draw the line at harming others, so it's probably a good rule of thumb that if you plan otherwise it's time to seek help.

In the magazine article about this article I read way back when, there was a very similar piece covered in the story which actually was identified as a parody of Cloud Strife. This "boy" is either a different piece, or the artist dropped the Cloud Strife parody under threat of Square-Enix lawyers. ;)

I did. Now I'll ask you, did you even read what I wrote?

How does that counter act what I said?

I mean COME ON, remember that toast that looked like it had the face of Jesus on it?
Well that single thing sold for millions of dollars on E-bay. There's people out there that'll buy anything no matter the money it costs if they're fond of it.

So they're not paying 15 million for a type of fancy pornography, they're paying 15 million to be mock those pathetic different people and they're stupid ways. If this is one of the most important artists of modern times then culture is dead.
