hmmmm. Best Video Game Character? I'd have to say my vote is for Dante from the DMC series. Atleast in dmc 3, he had fun with it. Vergil: Why do you refuse to gain power? The power of our father Sparda?
Dante: Father? I don't have a father. I just don't like you, that's all.

Search button! Oh wait... he/she isn't that famous I suppose.

Don't be a search whore; the search button is like a wife on her period, all nice one minute and stroppy and evil the next.

Best Character....hmmm.. my vote goes to Raz from psychonauts or perhaps the leading man from FF XII Balthier.

Navi is my favorite... not because of her annoying voice or lack of information because every time someone won't shut up I think of Navi. So I guess it's really most memorable and less favorite.

Alyx Vance, Jade from Beyond Good and Evil, or Isaac Clarke of Dead Space. With all the shit he has to go through he deserves a mention here.

I would say that 'The Vizeer' from PoP: Sands of Time would be the best villain. Best character though would have to be Hayden Tenno from 'DarkSector' just because of that bad ass final cut scene.

Wow...no Mario? Real shocker...Still like Viewtiful Joe...and Alastor...and...well just about every character in Viewtiful Joe...

It seems Mario has not gotten much love last year but he is my favourite. While alot of developers were making racing and spaceship games, a special developer who wanted to do something different named Shigeru Miyamoto created Mario.

Originally a carpenter that jumps over barrels to save a princess became a Italian plumber who travels through pipes and eating mushrooms to get big while fighting turtles to save a princess. I also like Donkey Kong and his banana eating, barrel throwing adventures. I reckon they will always be the best video game characters.

My runner ups would be Link, Samus, Fox, Kirby, Sonic, Bowser, Akuma, Ryu, Pac-Man and some I can't think of right now.

Oooh, forgot about Jade for a second there. But what about Peyj? He made that game what it is.

Max Payne. from the original game (he sucked in MP2)

He is the only game character with a real personality so far.

The Silver Surfer because in his game for the NES he is even more of an unstoppable badass than in the comics.

To the people who have said the companion cube, how the hell does a inanimate object count as a character? Fair enough if you liked the joke (although it has gotten well beond it's use by date around about now) but there's only so far you can drag it out.

The best mute character I have played as has to be the Doom Marine, firstly, he started the idea (Gordan Freeman is just a space marine wannabe) and secondly what other good, human protaganists can you name who have blasted their way through Hell itself on more than three occasions?

The best speaking character I've played as has to be Jack Carver from FarCry (remember when it used to be good, with mutants and super magical feral powers?). For some reason I instantly liked him when I began playing and despite the cruel difficulty of the game and shoddy sneaking gameplay I kept ploughing through the game just to see what would happen to him next.
Also, the mutation he undergoes partway through the game is actually appropriate for the character.
Remember in Area 51 when Ethan Cole changes from being a skeptical science obsessed daddy's boy into a snarling fanged squid man? That's quite a strong contrast (and he can continueously shift between the two). Jack on the other hand is supposed to be a bit of a bastard anyway so making him a brutal, adrenaline fueled psychopath seems rather fitting.

The best, or at least who i believe is the best, is the magnificent Gillian Seed. Any man who can wear a trenchcoat with such panache whilst also managing to be a sexually deprived amnesiac detective searching for cybernetic 'snatchers' gets my vote! Some of you may already have guessed my opinion though...

The Companion cube is a much better character than all of your picks.

What is your reasoning behind this statement? Why is an inanimate object superior to both the Doom Marine and Jack Carver? (preferably something that isn't related to gamer pop culture)

I think Samus Aran is a pretty fair pick

Simple. I was able to get much more attached to the cube.

MR. GAME & WATCH

And, of course, GlaDos, with her weighted companion cube.

The "L" block, courtesy of Tetris, would certainly be a runner-up, though. I do have to agree with that statement.
