There's an element that just about every good game has. A type of enemy that genuinely puts you on edge. You see or hear it coming, your grip tightens, your jaw clenches and you say to yourself "Oh *BLEEP!*" What I'm wondering is what do you think is the biggest and baddest of these heavy hitting enemies to date?

1. Bioshock Big Daddy: You're trapped underwater in a city run by a objectivist megalomaniac who's let the city fall to the deranged genetically twisted anarchists that now populate it. It's a place where at any moment some lunatic may come running at you to blast you, bash your head in, or gut you with a rusty metal hook. Suddenly, that's when you hear it, that low moan and the heavy, thunderous step of a large, nasty creature clad in a filthy diving suit, carrying a mining auger or a rivet gun, the Big Daddy.

2. Left 4 Dead Tank: Your running out of breath as you and three other survivors of a biological disaster are making your frantic, hurried rush for escape. The infected could jump out at you from anywhere. You emerge from an alleyway and start to cross a parking lot, when without warning, the ground starts shaking, and you hear a furious roar. climbing over the top of a jack-knifed mac semi is a massive infected, snarling and howling, throwing furniture-sized chunks of pavement at you and looking to pound you into roadkill, the Tank.

3. Halflife Antlion Guard: As Gordon Freeman, you and your fellow resistance members are fighting a desperate battle against the oppressive Combine for the freedom of Earth. But the soldiers of the combine aren't your only concern. In your travels, as you pick your way through the places where alien species have come to dominate the land, you dread the sight of one massive creature smashing through a wall or barricade, looking to trample you so its smaller friends can pick at your struggling body. It's wild, it's untamed, and it's pissed off, the Antlion Guard.

4. Resident Evil 4 Dr. Salvador: As Leon Kennedy, you've found yourself in a hostile village, trying to rescue the American president's daughter. You're being chased by bloodthirsty villagers, their bodies taken over by a parasite. You barricade yourself in a house, when you hear a harsh, mechanical braying sound. Through the crowd of murderous villagers comes one with a burlap sack over his head, carrying a blood-splattered chainsaw, Dr. Salvador.

5) Other: If you've got any enemy from another game that struck you in this manner, let's hear it; but one rule: it can't be a one-time boss from a game, it has to be an enemy that appeared more than once.

Big Daddy all the way, there's nothing more hardcore. However, the Chameleons from Resistance 2 deserve some love up in this poll.

That one was called Dr. Salvador? Everytime I saw one I focused all my heaviest firepower on him. He instakills you if he comes close and has health like a damn tank.

Big Daddy for sure, second would be Bowser in Mario.
Got 'cha! Yeah right :P

Deathclaws in Fallout 3 can be pretty annoying, especially if you don't use the Dart Gun, since they can close the distance on you faster than you can take them out, and if you get corned by 2 or 3 of them you might as well reload and save some time.

Also the Sand Worms in Dune 2 were pretty much indestructible, all you could really do was run away or sacrifice 3 expendable vehicles to it to satisfy it's appetite. But are they excluded by there shear size and neutral, not malevolent nature?

one word...waddledee

Other - The Behemoths from Fallout 3. From the second that bus explodes outside the GNR, and you hear that stomping, up until the point when you look over the horizon and see the thirty foot monster staggering towards those wrecked train carts, the Behemoths in that game are complete motherfucking badasses.

I would have to say the big daddys from bioshock, It's really terrifying to hear their footsteps and not know where they'r comming from while playing bye yourself, with all the lights turned out, at 3am.

Tanks. Just finished the 4th scenario on L4D and goddamn tanks always scare me. They stomp around and tear holes in the freaking house. However they are honestly nothing compared to my hatred of Boomers. I hate those fat sonsofbitches!
Why are people afraid of Big Daddies? As long as you dont try to molest the little sisters they dont bother you and with a little skill you can get them facing a few other enemies while you pummel him from behind.

Beserkers in GoW.
On my first ever play through of the game when it came charging its way through. I managed to swear more times than Marcus himself.

*Enters room*

Hmmm, this place seems a little dilapidated & unwelcoming. Lots of brown. Dark, too.

*Radio static begins*

Someone please kill me.

That little physicist from Half life 2. I hate that guy. He always has to come along just when things are fine. Wait, I mean...

Just about every boss ever that's bigger than a bus.

I Wanna be the Guy's Moon. Freaking evil.

The titan's in both of the resistances. In both games they take massive amounts of ammo to kill and can kill you in about three shots or less if your unlucky.

Daymo:

It's a shame you can beat them by just circle strafing around a waist-high object in the environment.

It would have been better if they'd had a high ranged attack like mortar fire.

I've got one word for you...

"STAAAARSSS!

Nemesis set the standard for badass-ness and gave me more heart attacks than anything else could.

I'd give Pyramid Head second place =D

Hunter: The Reckoning-- the huge pink monstrosity you first see in front of the school.

Has anybody else played this game?

for sheer "ohshitohshitohshitohshitohshitohshitohshitohshit"-ness, Dr. Salvador is unparalleled. you're goin' along doing fine, then all of a sudden you hear the roar of a chainsaw and start spinning around trying to find it, and then you try to empty all your ammo into it while your hands are shaking until it's too close oh god it's too close and so you spin and try to run but it's too late and your head's gone.

Shit. It's gorram run-on sentence worthy.

Tanks.

Dead air, a hallway. I open the door.

Tank------Me--------The other guys.

"OH SHI-*crash*"

The funny thing is the other guys are telling me to get out of it's way.

Big Daddy: Having finished BioShock, as far as I remember, they're not so bad late into the game on Normal.

Tank: Just from playing the demo, the Tank gets my vote.

Antlion Guard: Around the same league as the Big Daddy.

Dr. Salvadore: No opinion because I've never played RE4, but I've watched my bro play it.

Other: The Sword Dancer from Tales of Symphonia is pretty bad-ass.

The Tank. Especially when its on fire:
A huge inferno of fire and flesh crashing towards you, wanting nothing but to smash you until you're part of the pavement...

Tank. Oh definitely the tank, played alot of horror games and the only thing that comes close to it are the crimson zombies from Resident Evil. They still give me the creeps.

harhol:

Yeh, that is true, just make sure it's not a car, been blown up by them way too many times.

my most hated enemy has to be Sargent Johnsten in Halo. y? well me adn my friends were having a contest to see who could kill the most marins and well.....any one who has tried knows my pain

The Cyborg Midwives from System Shock 2. They're armoured, so you have to use armour-piercing ammunition to have any chance of damaging them, and that on top of a game which has weapons that would make the Chauchat look reliable.

Alpha-whatever from Dead or Alive 4, anyone who has fought her on ANY difficulty knows my pain.

I beat big daddies with the wrench, that game is way too easy.

Dr. Salvador gets #2

Actaully my most hated would be my allies in Dynasty Warriors or Warriors Orochi. Whenever you have to say take out 3 officers in under 10 minutes they wait around and do nothing, doing as much damage as a irate chipmunk would until you whittle the officers down to a bare nub of health. Then they all decide to charge, blocking your view and steal your kill.
Not to mention when LuBu shows up they all flee and let the bastard come right to you. The only exception for that is obviously your army leader who if he dies its game over so he simply must throw himself at every officer and overwhelming force including LuBu. Just to get taken out in 5 seconds losing the match for you making all that running around keeping the bastard alive a total waste of time.

Bioshocks were massively scary at first, but then i realised i could keep respawning over and over and eventually kill it with a goddamn wrench - so that ruined it

The Half-Life 2 Striders with those massive guns on their bellies always made me shit my pants more than the Antlion Guards. All you need to do to kill the antlion guards is circle-strafe and use a lot of explosives; a battle with a strider is a constant race into cover.

but you HAVE to run from Lu Bu. It's rule #1 in the rules of engagement!

I say Deathclaws, with Salvador close behind. I ran into salvador with nothing but that crappy ass handgun. "oh crap. that don't look go..."-RRRREEEAAAHHH!!!

None of these are hardcore, these are demi-bosses at most. Wheres my option for the Last dragon from DQVIII, Ozma, Black Dante or anyone from socom 2!

cant be arsed to edit the large quote

Simple, to kill lu bu get to red health, fire mosou, run, rinse, wash, repeat :D (note, blade lock and your screwed XD)

polarity assault dark elves in too human becuase have a habit of fireing enough arrows to block out the sun 300 style, and inflicts DOT effects if you get hit with 1

That Tank always gets me, every time I play L4D. I swear, I must have a homing beacon on my chest when he spawns!

Rust Dragons (from Heroes of Might and Magic III)
The Demon Wall (makes equally frustrating appearances in FFVII and IV)
The underwater colossus (from SotC obviously)
Velius (FF Tactics)
Last but definitely not least (how could they have been forgotten) the cyberdemon.

Doom. Just...Doom.

Oh, and Big Daddies stopped being scary the moment you realized that you can freeze them and hit them to death with your wrench.
