So this Wii walks under a tree...

So, Santa Baby gave me a Wii for Winter Retail Holiday.

And for some strange reason, a copy of Baroque, as well, in spite of me pointing out Okami and Samba de Amigo. But Santa Baby also kept the receipt, so that's no big deal.

But I have a few questions:

I see World of Goo is available for download. Is the Wii a good fit for World of Goo? Or should I be looking at the PC version instead?

I already own Okami for the PS2, but I haven't played through it yet. Is it worth getting the Wii version as well, and playing through that instead or along with?

The Wii Motion upgrade that I saw mentioned in the fencing poll+thread, how much of an update is that? Is it simply controller+sensor bar+firmware? Or is it an entirely new console rev?

How Gamecube compatible is the Wii? I'm porbably going to grab a copy of Pac-Man Vs. and try to hunt down a GBA link cable anyway, but is that pushing matters too far? And are there any Gamecube games that I should be looking up in general anyway?

I prefer Okami on the ps2 but that's just me. I never had any trouble drawing stuff using the ps2 controller except for the detail work on a completely irrelevant design you get to make up later on in the game.

I don't know much about the Wii but I do not a lot about Gameboy Advanced games.

Get the two Golden Sun games if you enjoy RPG's. Get the two Advanced Wars if you like turn based RTS (these two are probably the best two in the genre). Get the Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past (and the Four Swords multiplayer) if you missed out on Link to the past back in the SNES days, it's probably one of the better Zelda games made. If you don't have the original pokemon games you could get either leafy green/fiery red. Any of the Mario games are good time wasters.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Damn, I could have sworn there where more.

The Wii is %100 compatible with Gamecube games, probably because the Wii is not much more than a Gamecube with a motion sensing controller. You do need a Gamecube controller and memory card to play Gamecube games.

World of Goo works very well on both PC and Wii.

Apparently de Blob was good, but I've never played it. That might be worth getting.

I played that at E for All about a year ago. I couldn't pull myself away from it.

The compatibility comes from the hardware being designed with backwards compatbility in mind, much like most PC hardware. (Imagine if your Pentium III PC couldn't play games designed for use with a Pentium II, eh. =P)

Well, I would recommend Zelda: Twilight Princess. Easily one of the best on the console so far.

Wii is completely backwards compatible, but you need to have a Gamecube controller and memory card in order to play.

I think if you already own Okami, and your PS2 isn't on Death Row like mine, you should just stick with that. I don't remember hearing about any expansion of gameplay in the Wii edition, just that you got to draw with the wiimote instead of an analog stick. Of course, knowing the Wiimote's sensitivity issues, that might not be such a good thing.

The game cube games work perfectly with the Wii, all of them do. World of Goo is a really fun game though!

I grabbed World of Goo. It reminds me a whole lot of Lemmings. That's a good thing.

I'm all set as far as GBA games go. The only thing about Pac-Man Vs. is that it uses the GBA as a controller by way of the link cable. Hopefully it'll work. I'll post if it doesn't.

Santa Baby is having much fun with Wii Sports, and she's also having fun playing with the Miis, which, given her love for the Sims, is hardly surprising.

Now, are any of the Wii Sims games any good? Or any other of the dolly simulation sorts of games worthwhile?

She also gave me Baroque to go along with it, which, after reading the reviews, I can see is not going to be my thing. Boom Blox, or de Blob, or even Wario Ware might wind up repacing it.

I've played pac-man vs. a ton on the wii, it works exactly the same as you would expect. I also think that is the best use of an old IP to come along in a while.

Okami for the Wii definitely isn't worth it if you already have it for the PS2, plus the drawing is easier with a control stick. From what I've heard from several friends World of Goo is just as good on PC as well as Wii, but I've never played either, so I can't give you an accurate opinion on that one.

The update hasn't come out yet and it will come out with wii sports 2. You really need to get no more heros for the wii it's like GTA meets starwars.

I have yet to play it. I've wanted to, since reading about it, and I've been tempted to pick up a Gamecube just to give it a go, since they've dropped down to $30 at Gamestop, but now, no. :-)

What baffles me, is that it's gotten so little press, and it seems to me to be the best implementation of console+portable gameplay to date. If anybody's done anything close to that, I have yet to hear about it. Well, I'll find out for myself soon enough if it's teh suxxorz.

Am I the only one who thinks it is more important for the wii to run gamecube games than actual wii games?

Not an invalid position.

As I noted in another thread, the Wii's control scheme is sufficiently alien to historical gaming, that any conventional third person sort of title, say frex, MGS: Snake Goes Wii, would be only barely recognizable as being part of the same franchise.

Developers are still finding their way around.

At the same time, due to its modeling on the remote control, it's also the most accessible control scheme ever.

I think how this shakes out is that the physical retail space will contain primarily lightweight, casual games, Nintendo franchisees, and broad appeal music games, however, Wii-specific titles by more serious developers will likely be (hopefully) critically lauded Wiiware.

Add to that the fact the only traditional sort of controller that Nintendo offers is their retro theingie for Virtual Console games, and I think it's safe to say the Wii isn't the console to look at when you want traditional two-fisted gaming.

That being said, I've begun my quest for Pac-Man Vs. I picked up a copy of I-Ninja (one of the three titles that came with Pac-Man Vs.) cheap. I inquired as to the price of a GC memory card. $15-$18. Though I spy from the website they have cheaper available. And I see GBA link cables are readily available. The funny part is the controller action. The ones they have on offer on their website range in price from $15-$25. They offer refurb Gamecubes, with a wired controller for $30.

for the ii okami is better on the ps2 if you already have it, thoguht it is fun on the wii too.

World of goo I love, I also like the strong bad games - but im a huge home star runner fan, if you don't know who he is or don't like it don't bother.

My sims is a nice game to play its diffrent from other the sims game though. Its more simple and you only control one charater, and have to build stuff got the town and the neighbours.

I've not tried to play any gba games on the wii thought i do play my game cube games. Game cube games i'd suggest are:- Metroid pime are good if you like fps. Final fantasy crystal chronicals if you like rpgs. F-zero if you like racing games. Sonic adventure DX/Sonic adventure 2 battle - best 3d sonic games out there. Super mario sunshine and lugi masion them last 4 are more action-adventure/platformer games

I dont know if stating the obvious helps or not but I'm going to do it anyway! :-P
Metroid Prime 1 and 2, F-Zero GT, Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Soul Calibur 2

Avoid the Starfox game because it's ridiculously kiddy and features a talking dinosaur that follows you everywhere and will not shutthefuckup.

Also avoid any other racing game ever because F-Zero GT is six billion times better.

Except maybe Burnout titles, they kick ass.

Completely compatible, start buying all those Cube game you wanted to play but couldn't afford the first time.
Smash bros Melee, Metroid Prime/Echoes, Twilight Princess, Windwaker, Resident Evil Zero/4, F-Zero X, Viewtiful Joe. There are masses of excellent Cube games out there.
I really enjoyed Starfox Adventures too, yes it's incredibly kiddy and cheesy, but then so is every Starfox game, it's well made, still looks pretty good and it's fun.

As a rule of thumb if it's out on Wii and another previous gen console, get the not-Wii version. I haven't played a Wii version that added anything worth paying full prices for old games yet. Quite often the controls are worse as well.

It's not so much a matter of not affording the first time around, as much as lack of interest. I've logged far more hours with Donkey Kong than any other Mario based title, and I never owned an NES, so I'm not particularly invested in any of the franchisees. My primary interest lies in anything unique or compelling or interesting. At today's prices, I can afford to be unpicky, as with original xbox games. I'm already thinking of Paper Mario and Geist. And while I love the Warioware style minigames for portable gaming, I don't know if I'd enjoy their console sized kin.

My interest in the Gamecube extended only as far as being able to play my GBA games on the bigscreen, for which I now have a modded xbox+emulator, and the aforementioned Pac_Man Vs.

As far as Okami goes, at that price, *ahem*, no way. Imean, at a budget price, it would be worth considering as a second copy, but at new title price, there has to be something more compelling on offer.

And yes, the Wii controls still feel feel very much like rev 1.0, though it is fun playing with the unholy offspring of Warioware Twisted and the Powerglove.

As far as I now, there really isn't a way yet to play GBA on the Wii, unless Nintendo starts offering titles for download. Gamecube accomplished the trick by having an addon that plugged into the bottom. I always thought that it would have been infinitely cooler if Nintendo just made a version of the GBA with no screen and video out, and housed it in a case that looked exactly like a scaled down NES.

Pac-Man Vs. is one of three games that used the GBA link cable to add the GBA as a controller to the 'cube, which is where some of the confusion in this thread lies, I think. That uniqueness and the hardware situation is odd enough that it would be completely understandable if it really wasn't high on the backwards compatibility spec sheet.
