Inconsistencies in Games

wahat I mean is stuff in games that happens but has nothing to show for it or just doesn't make sense. Like in Jak 2 and 3 how Jak is so short to everyone else, or how in the original Mario Brothers how Mario would stomp the conquered castle only to appear right next to it on the next level.

what is this thread about

Sorry, I accidently hit enter.

Ok i was wondering what it was about, but anyway games are fictional and fiction doesn't need to be logical

Well if games were non fiction it would be like sitting threw history class

Since Mario doesn't take place on Earth, there's no need for it to reflect our experiences of physics, gravity, proportion etc.

"or layk how in ff7 ur player iz as big as teh townz but den u go in dem an der not!"

Right? Yeah, that's not inconsistency. Using my uber awesome FF7 self-quote as reference here, at no point are you supposed to be under the impression that the towns are actually that small, they're merely icons on an interactive world/map that allow you to go from the 'world' into the 'town' and know that you did it. This isn't inconsistency, it's a mechanic.

I know what you mean though, I'm currently playing through Super Mario World and it bugs me how you can drop from huge distances and land, and be unscathed yet one touch from an enemy and you take damage. I don't get it. That's a pretty tame example, there are some blatant inconsistencies out there.

Mario wears padded shoes and all enemies carry invisible stun guns. Problem solved.

Don't make me call the grammer Nazis.

Again, not an inconsistency! It's freakin' Mario World for f**ks sake, it's not supposed to behave like real life! And you can't say it's an inconsistency when it doesn't. "omg mario shud have brokan his nees wen he landad, dis gayme iz sooo incunsistant!"

Woah, just a little nit pick I have when I'm sucking at the game. Didn't realize you were that passionate.

You know, I can see mentioning this when the game is supposed to be a realistic reflection of the real world or when it's something that gets in the way of gameplay, but Mario Brothers? Seriously?

You know what's unrealistic about Mario Brothers? There's only two dimensions! WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THAT?

Do you have their phone number?

Really I would have called Mario out on eating a mushroom to get bigger smoking a flower to shoot fire, and saving the human princess of a mushroom kingdom from a giant spiked fire breathing turtle-thing.

Face it games shouldn't be realistic. It's more fun that way.

And who in their right mind designs those castles? To get out the front door you have to go through so much sh*t.

Must be an inconsistency!

@ chin_strap: I don't actually care about Mario World, it's your improper use of what fits in the realms of an inconsistency that bothers me.

Happy new years brah!

I thought I'd try to add something. I failed.

Awwwww... I wanted to program their number into my phone.

ah well, it could be worse, its not like characters die and come back to life for no reason, oh wait. ps play fire emblem if you want consistancy if one of your characters die in that game there gone forever!!!

How do we know we aren't fictional? Come to think of it, how would video game worlds feel if they knew they were in a fake world? Even in WWII games, this year is 2008 and soon to be 2009. They're stuck in the past. Sorry, what was I talking about?

You summoned?

I really didn't think this through.

The humble master of the crying freezer would like to point out that despite being quoted four times, noone's yet corrected "grammer" to "grammar". Thanks for your time.

Finally, someone noticed. I was busy trying to figure out if it was a European variant or something.

Too late, we're here now. Come along lads - someone has somehow misspelled the term "what". How can this be?

Plus, grammar is spelled with an 'a'.

Gaming is bound to be full of inconsistencies - after all, it is gaming. As in, fictional. What did you expect? Mario : Now with Havok!

The 'e' was intentional you Nazi scum.

I think you have the wrong definition of "inconsistant". You're describing realism, not inconsistencies. Either way, who cares about realism? Name to me one game that has every single thing about it that's real.

Funny story- Super Smash Bros. Brawl uses Havok.

It doesen't stick in sequels though, although most games are self contained and I always reset after a death but it still happens.

Or is it an inconsistency cleverly disguised as a game mechanic!?
