new hard drive space on ps3

I've recently installed a new hard drive in my ps3 - it was completely dead easy BUT out of a 320gb hard drive I only have 263gb after formatting. When I go into the systems settings, straight after I formatted the hard drive it said 263gb free/298gb...I understand that missing 22gb between 320 and 298 but not the rest???

ps. i realise this is just numbers as I can't complain about having 263gb (especially for £50)but just curious really.

320GB HDD isn't actually 320GBs, then you subtract the PS3 OS thats put on the new HDD it = that.
