That is not as clear cut as you say. Both Sony and Nintendo fucked over Phillips. Nintendo went one way, Sony went the other. |

Given the 360's 'excellent' reliability and all the money it's made for Microsoft (all $6billion), does anyone else think this was a clever triple cross by the people at Sony. "Our chips not ready yet, it runs but not properly. I know, let's get IBM to sell the component to Microsoft, we know they they need them. Microsoft never test anything, they'll put it on sale, it won't work and we can clean up once we've got our system working properly..." |

You've got it wrong, Nintendo back stabbed Sony by going with Philips (under contract I may add) and Sony just decided to use what they had to make the PlayStation. But anyway, I find this halarious even though I might not get exactly what's going on. Still funny though :D |

where'd you hear that? I know the RROD fiasco (what with needing to repair and replace free of charge ) has lost microsoft $700 million, and that each console sells at a loss, so how can they make any money from it? |

I'd probably find it interesting to be honest. Engineers probably say the same about us, "why would anyone want to paly blah blah" insert insipid comment here. |

Yes cause it was Microsoft who made up their own movie reviewer and told us all that any sort of music ripping was theft. No wait. Just saying this is a complete "glass house" situation. |

I wasn't aware that any of this was actually relevant to Microsoft actively stealing someone elses tech, but what you listed really pales in comparison to PAYG computing. Edit: And if its the context of a brand again, I am forced to bring out IBM and the Nazis. User was banned for: Poll: What is your opinion on the Metal Gear Solid storylines?. (Permanent) |

This made me laugh a lot more than perhaps it should have. I generally don't care about stuff like this but the inner fan boy in me is pretty chuffed knowing Sony willingly shot themselves in the foot with a gianormous knife launcher just for all the gear I've bought from them that shat itself and died as soon as the warranty expired. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1520 Joined: 5 Jul 2008 | I've always said that the Cell and the Xenon have more similarities with each other (both are based on the Power architecture for one) than the Xenon and the PC have. Interestingly, the biggest loser here has been Apple: IBM spent their resources on console processors and their interest in delivering, say, a version of G5 that works properly with laptops diminished. But who'da thunk Sony would do all the mistakes Nintendo made almost a decade earlier?
In this case, no stealing (or anything illegal) had actually been done. Sony had agreed that IBM would eventually sell the Cell to other clients, but they hadn't thought of the possibility that IBM would sell key parts of the tech before it's done. Also, yes, MS has horrible practices but anyone who thinks Sony (or Nintendo) is any better is fooling themselves. |

Pardon my intrusion, but I've seen far more "unethical". If Microsoft is unethical, Apple is the nazi empire and sony is well.. their japanese friends... User was banned for: TIME Makes Everybody Lose "The Game". (Permanent) |

there i fixed that for you, they ARE unethical, they've been convicted of it several times by a few different courts like i've said about this console war, no matter who "wins", IBM is the only real winner |

Whos fault is it if someone sells you something they stole? Gee, I don't know, maybe the guy that sold it to you in the first place? Just because you've been convicted to court doesn't mean shit. Sony fuxed Microsoft because of a NAME for their video format, and Apple went whining to the court cause Microsoft actually had success and achieved quasi-monopoly. K? K. Eh, IBM didn't really steal anything. Just sneaky business on their part. The Cell mostly IBM designed as is the Xenon. Like I said, Sony knew IBM was going to sell the Cell processor to other clients, but Sony didn't anticipate them selling key parts of it before the thing was even complete. No actual breaching of contract happened, as I understand it, since Sony didn't even think a situation like this would even happen. |

Obviously that's not what happened, because Sony is losing money with every console sold, and hasn't enough exclusives to turn a lot of core 360 players to Sony. |

Sorry for the stolen title, but damn, Engadget's headline was just too good.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/01/book-details-how-sony-paid-for-xbox-360-dev-let-microsoft-borro/
...Hot damn, I thought the AMD/ATI merger and the subsequent Intel motherboards supporting CrossFire and not Nvidia was filled with juicy drama.
Although I guess it's also fitting that the Xbox 360 has had its fair share of problems when it comes to production :]:[
