I agree that Bioshock has a great plot but I'm a JRPG fan for the most part and love the stories and plot of the older Final Fantasy's before Hironobu Sakaguchi left Square-Enix but best plot and story would go to Lost Odyssey! I would have to say this has the best and most emotional story in ANY game I've ever played, but if you can't tolerate JRPG's your really missing out.
Deus Ex was friggin amazing
The original KOTOR. Some of the best characters ever, and the plot was outstanding.
Objectively: Silent Hill 2

This. | |
My favorite: Oddworld: Abe's Exodus
I don't care what Yahtzee says: I still think that the plot in the Metal Gear Solid series is the best EVAR!
You speak some truth. | |
Tales of Symphonia /thread
Though they frequently make no sense, resis plots are quite enjoyable.
You have to agree though - for an outsider, it's confusing as hell. Personally, I'll go with the clichéd genius of Max Payne, the simplicity of Half-Life, the epic scope of Knights of the Old Republic and the utter brilliance of System Shock 2. Sequels/Prequels not included, but that doesn't mean they aren't any good.
Oh, I completely forgot Half-Life. Now there's an outstanding plot for ya'
Grim Fandango was fantastic. It still has the my favorite plot line in a video game after all this time. The character were great the locals were excellent and some of the themes in the game were very thought provoking. Tying in death with flowers? That's just messed up. And I loved it.
I wouldn't know; I'm not an outsider ;). I understand though that diving headfirst into the middle of it all would be overwhelmingly confusing. EDIT: Quote didn't work :S EDIT 2: Fixed
Secret of Mana, X111, Silent Hill 2 and Elder Scrolls 3 all had very good plots.
Thieves Guild storyline in Oblivion
In my opinion Gun had a very good story and interesting characters as did Fahrenheit (Indigo Propehcy).
The original Far Cry plot, it was hilarious and awesome at the same time. It should be made into a Sci-Fi Channel Original Movie.
Link's Awakening. Back in 1994, it made us think, like, hard, about the consequences of our actions.
Mass Effect first. (So sue me, I think it's nearly believable.) Assassin's Creed second. (I just think it's new and original. Not necessarily believable.)
KotOR. That was an easy choice for me. Finding games with storylines that you don't just speed click through is a rarity. Bioshock was pretty good too. Star Wars Galaxies has an awesome storyline that complements the saga's canon. (Sarcasm is pretty thick here)
The original Knights of the Old Republic. That had a great plot.
Deus Ex Many, many others, but those three are towards the top of my list.
FF6 yea...I love JRPG's their stories have always been great for me.
i loved bioshock's storyline too the way it made me go oh my god they can not be serious! It made playing through the game worth it just for that reveal moment.
fallout 3 I was immersed even random events made my skin crawl like fining a skeleton in a preservation pod with a gun, and I just RP it from there really so it becomes an epic story
Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty (ahh sarcasm) Battlefield Bad Company Portal Assassins Creed was kewl, never understood y they had to bring up the dudes past if he was in the future... maybe i should have beat the game ;) Ace Combat X for PSP Daxter PSP
KOTOR II, screw the plot holes, it still ran circles around Halo, oh wait, everyone does that.
i dont know what my best game plot but if i were to buy battlefield bad company i would slit my own throat +_+
I am ashamed that none of you have mentioned Breakdown yet. That is far and away the greatest video game plot ever conceived.
Y? | |
I'd have to agree that the basic plot to them is great. However it's the complicated filler and poor writing that pollutes an otherwise fantastic story.
Bioshock. I finished it three days ago and compared to most other games I play (Halo grade plots) it was just amazing. It would have been better if my friends had not blurted out key spoilers while I was playing through party chat. NEEEEERRRRRRRRRDDDDD RRRRRRRAAAAAGGGGGGEEEEEE!!!!!!!

I'm certain everyone has a plot in a videogame that they enjoy, and I'm curious to see what other people admired.
I personally enjoyed Bioshock's plot immensely. I know it has some basis from System Shock 2, but I haven't played it (I'd love to, though) and on its own, it's a truly compelling story, and the immersion is stellar. The characters and writing are top-notch, and put many games to shame.
Post your favorite videogame plots here, whether it be one filled with twists, straightforward, or silly.
