ok i recently got the orange box for christmas (portal is so awesome) and i wanted to start half life 2. problem is, i never played half life one. i dont particularly want the pc version cuz i dont have my own computer (have to share with my family =[ ). my cousin said he had a playstation version, but i dont have a playstation. he thinks there is probably an xbox version, but wikipedia says there isnt, which could be wrong but still... is there an xbox version of half life one? also, would i be able to play half life two without spoiling half life one?
There is no version of Half-Life 1 on the Xbox. You can probably play Half-Life 2 without ruining it for you, but don't expect to completely comprehend the story.
Theres a PS2 version but thats it. Sorry. I think theres a dreamcast version, but that might be emulated. You should know better than to ask this anyway. Wikipedia is never wrong ;).
the storyline fo r halflife 1 the gman makes you open a portal that sends out headcrabs and theres a sepcial suit you get and you save the day and you have 2 go in the portal or not if you go in the it leads 2 halflife 2 if you dont go through the portal you go to a planet named hell and probaly die
Yeh, I think it would be fairly safe to play HL2 without the fear of ruining Half-Life 1. To be honest, compared to the sequel (and the subsequent episodes) the "story" in the original Half-Life is a little on the thin side. Until HL2, there wasn't really much to HL besides the standard A to B repel to the invading aliens set up, albeit one very well put together.

Play it on the PC. You'll be hooked and rip through it quick. Anyway, don't play it on the PS2. everything was lost in the translation. It was a horrible, horrible port.

I can't support this statement enough. I would argue that one shouldn't play HL2 on 360, either, but some people just can't have their minds changed on that subject. But definitely play HL 1 on the PC. Anything less is uncivilized!

That was sarcasm too, right? Wikipedia, like anything else man-made, is sometimes wrong, sometimes right. Actually, from a recent study, I would trust Wikipedia over Britannica.
I also read the Wikipedia plot, at the time of the Half-life 1 fad I was young and stupid and incapable of taking down all the enemies the game was throwing at me, so I never finished it. Good for me is that they're remaking HL 1 on the PC with the HL2 engine, but to be honest, all you need to know is that there's this dude with a moustache and a crowbar named Gordon Freeman who is a alien killing superman scientist who worked at a place which unleashed a load of aliens upon the world that come in many shapes and sizes until he stops them, the combine come in and screw the world over.

Well, I played Half-Life on PS2 and loved it. But then again I haven't played it on PC, does that mean that on PC its just plain awesome?

As people have said, the first Half-Life is only available for PC and PS2. I've never played the PS2 version, so I can't speak as to its quality. It's also true that you don't need to play Half-Life to enjoy or 'get' Half-Life 2; all you need to know story-wise is that you, Gordon Freeman, were a theoretical physicist at a secret research facility called Black Mesa that was experimenting with teleportation, that an experiment opened a portal to an alien world and started an alien invasion, and that you survived by going to the alien world (Xen) and destroying the Nhilanth, who had controlled and enslaved a species of aliens called the Vortigaunts. Then a shadowy guy who we refer to as the G-Man because we don't know his real name or really anything else about him brought you to some sort of purgatory-like place and 'hired' you, keeping you trapped in this space until the beginning of Half-Life 2. That's really about the sum of the assumed knowledge in Half-Life 2.

He dons this armour and, taking the name Master Chief, proceeds to battle the Covenant for the next three games. After that, he removes Master Chief's helmet to discover he has become a promising young scientist with impressive facial hair called Gordon Freeman. He uses the new found knowledge to build a large research facility in the desert and names it Black Mesa.
You may also be able to work Fable 2 in there somewhere, because according to that game, Master Chief also made an appearance in Albion at one point in time....
i played HL1 after playing more recent ones and i dont think i really missed a lot. and the little i had missed didnt really seem to matter since i red about the storyline beforehand.

FREAKING AWESOME! and after the black mesa incident he decides to go to the gym to bulk up, smokes 120 cigarettes a day making his voice huskier, he washes his suit of armour on the wrong setting hereby losing its colour, straps a chainsaw to his gun and goes off killing locusts.
I played HL:2 before playing HL:1 and after a little research, it made sense. The first game isn't vital, but it certainly helps understanding the Black Mesa jargon.

Gordon and Alyx aren't around the same age Gordon is in his 40's and Alyx is like 20 something.

It's up to you, but Half-Life is worth checking out. For a game that's 10 years old, it still looks and plays fantastic. To put it in context, it's kind of like seeing the Godfather II without seeing the first: It doesn't ruin the experience but why would you deny yourself something great? In any event, hope you enjoy the Half-Life universe.
